December 2011
Dear Upper Mid Parents,
We hope that you can join us on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at our annual Introduction to the College Process for Upper Mid Parents. The day will start at 8:00 am with registration and a continental breakfast, and it will end by 1:00 pm so that you can have lunch and attend athletic contests both here or away.
The formal program will begin with a keynote address by Christopher Gruber, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Davidson College in North Carolina. One of the most thoughtful and energetic speakers that I have known in my career, Chris will undoubtedly offer an array of excellent perspectives on the college search and selection process that will help to set the stage for the journey ahead.
After Mr. Gruber's speech we will move to individual meetings with your child's specific counselor. At that session you will learn about the road ahead and see a demonstration of the Naviance Family Connection, a web-based system that helps students and families manage the college process.
Following that session, we'll reconvene in Bingham Auditorium for two panel discussions. The first panel will feature a current senior, the parent of a current senior, a former student, and the parent of a former student who will offer useful perspectives, tips, and suggestions gleaned from their own experiences with the college process.
We will then finish the day by hearing from a panel of college admissions deans that will include Mr. Gruber, Ms. Gail Sweezy, the Dean of Admissions at Gettysburg College, and Mr. Jason Locke, the Director of Admissions at Cornell University. While the actual agenda will be driven by your questions, the panelists will be prepared to discuss a range of topics including: financial aid and scholarships, test preparation, campus visits, summer activities, early admissions programs, interviews, gap years, and the role of arts, athletics, and special considerations in admissions.
