December 2009
Dear Upper Mid Parent,
I hope that you can join us on Saturday, January 16, 2010, at our annual Introduction to the College Process for Upper Mid Parents. The day will start at 8:00 am with registration and a continental breakfast, and it will end by 1:00 pm so that you can have lunch and attend athletic contests both here or away. (Click here for a PDF of the complete schedule of events.)
The formal program will begin with a keynote address by Mary Karen Vellines, Dean of Admissions at the College of Wooster in Ohio. Prior to her recent move to Wooster, Ms. Vellines served as a senior associate dean of admissions at Hamilton College in New York and as the Director of College Counseling at Charlotte Country Day School in North Carolina. Her unique insights from having worked on “both sides” of the admissions desk will undoubtedly provide important perspectives about how students and families can manage the college search and application process. After her speech we will move to individual meetings with your child’s specific counselor. At that session you will learn about the road ahead and see a demonstration of the Naviance Family Connection, a web-based system that helps students and families manage the college process.
Following that session, we’ll reconvene in Bingham Auditorium for two panel discussions. The first will feature a group of students and parents who are veterans of the college process. They will offer useful perspectives, tips, and suggestions gleaned from personal experience. The second panel—a Q&A session with a group of college admissions deans—will provide an opportunity to address issues that are most important to you. While the agenda will be driven by your questions, potential topics for discussion include such things as financial aid and scholarships, test preparation, campus visits, summer activities, early admissions programs, applicant reviews, interviews, gap years, and the role of arts, athletics, and special considerations in admissions.
We look forward to seeing you on the 16th of January, and if you haven’t done so already, please be sure to register online.
Sincerely,
Terence A. Giffen, Director of College Counseling
Andrew D. McNeill, Senior Associate Director of College Counseling
Catherine D. Ganung, Associate Director of College Counseling
Jason B. Honsel, Associate Director of College Counseling
