Taft Alumni Trustee

Steven B. Turner ’86

During his four years at Taft, Steve played varsity soccer and lacrosse. He was also a member of the Oriocos singing group.

After Taft, Steve earned a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Vermont. Steve moved to San Francisco after college and worked for Wells Fargo Bank in California, providing commercial banking services (small business lending) as assistant vice president. Steve left San Francisco to gain an M.B.A. from Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. After business school, Steve moved to New York in 1995 and was a banker at GE Capital and then Bear Stearns.

In 1998, Steve co-founded and was co-CEO of Capital IQ. Capital IQ, and its 3,000 employees, provide high-impact information and workflow solutions to over 2,300 leading financial institutions, advisory firms, and corporations. The company was sold to Standard & Poor’s in 2004. After the acquisition, Steve became executive managing director at Standard & Poor’s. He co-headed the Financial Data & Analytics Division, which has 4,000 employees in 15 different countries and includes Capital IQ (www.capitaliq.com), Compustat (www.compustat.com), Clarifi (www.clarifi.com) and S&P Directory businesses. The businesses collect financial and descriptive data on companies and securities, integrate it into software and web platforms, and sell it to clients on a subscription basis. Steve also served as a member of the Operating Committee for Standard & Poor’s; Standard & Poor’s is the largest division of McGraw-Hill Companies.

Steve left S&P in July 2008 and moved to New Zealand, initially to take a year off and travel with his family, but that has recently turned into a more permanent move to New Zealand. Steve is now looking at career opportunities in New Zealand.

Steve married fellow Taftie and classmate Shannon Engels in 1995. Shannon, a former financial news journalist for Asset International and Dow Jones, is now a yoga instructor for children. Steve and Shannon live in Wanaka, New Zealand, with their three kids, Sam, Callie and Will. Steve and his family are enjoying the many activities in their new surroundings, including skiing, mountain biking, hiking and fishing.

Each year, Taft alumni elect a member of their own to serve a four-year term on the school’s board of trustees. For the first time ever, all three alumni candidates this year were also married to alumni.

Ballots are mailed in March and votes are due two weeks before Alumni Weekend, when the results are announced at the Alumni Luncheon.
