Win 8-2
Today we had our season opener up at Avon and as per the Avon custom, the ladder is one large ladder, so Varsity had nine players, and JV had 10, making 19 matches played. For the #’s 10-19… Taft School #8 Zander Salnikoff, comfortable after being JV Captain last year, won without incident 3-0. Taft #9 Teddy Schoenholtz played a great match but lost 3-1, impressive considering how strong Avon is at the varsity level. Taft #10 (JV Co-captain) Rex Riefler had a 5-game dual that could have gone either way, but in the final game Rex kept the ball deep and to the sides, winning 11-3 in the fifth game. (1-11, 12-10, 11-1, 9-11, 11-3.) #11 and JV Co-captain Jamie Zoellner played classic squash, keeping the ball high and deep, far from his opponent’s reach, to win 3-0. (11-4, 11-1, 11-1). Taft #12 Sawyer Bradley had an excellent day on court. Sawyer took the first two games 11-5, 11-9, not surprising, as he likes to come out strong. He dropped the third game 9-11, but rallied quickly mentally to take the fourth and final game 11-6. #13 Marshall Henshaw played confidently and comfortably to win 3-1. Taft #14 Gus Harper had a great day as well, winning 4,4,7. Gus has a classic, controlled style of game. His movement is large and brief; instead of running, he glides. #15 Spencer Sin played beautiful squash. Spencer has an interesting and balanced game…a complete game of experience, technique, quickness, and shots. Spencer won today 11-6, 11-3, 11-5. #16 Laird Fitzgerald played well and won 3-1. #17 Liam Shannon had some excellent shots, but the big points always seemed to go to his opponent. Taft #18 Bill Lu played impressively; he kept the ball out of the middle, and put his opponent into the back corners, then dropped short – smart! Bill won 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-2). #19 Hunter Essex played well and with confidence winning in three: 9,3,5. Now exams, then vacation. See you in January! Team Record: 1-0. Coach Kevin E. Conroy
