Record: 12-1

Overview

Overview

The boys’ JV golf team is an integral part of the success of the Taft golf program. Members have the opportunity to practice and play at Watertown Golf Club, giving them time to improve all aspects of their game as they prepare to move up to the varsity level.

Practices are a balance between skill development and on-course play; the team has 16 scheduled matches. Many players who begin their golf careers at Taft as junior varsity players end up being major contributors to the varsity squad, and enjoy the game of golf for a lifetime.

About Coach Murphy

Dan, a 1993 graduate of the University of Maine, started his independent secondary boarding school career at his alma mater, The Gunnery, where he worked in the admissions office, the classroom, the library, the dormitory, and on the playing fields for two years. In 1997, he took advantage of an opportunity to become a full-time history teacher at Avon Old Farms School, where he taught U.S. History and AP U.S. History. While at Avon, he served as the head coach of the cross country team and was an assistant thirds' soccer coach and assistant track coach. After six years at Avon Old Farms, Dan was hired to teach history and coach boys’ varsity hockey at Taft. Over the years, he earned his master’s degree in history from Trinity College and has taught a wide variety of history courses ranging from Approaches to History to AP U.S. History. In addition to his work in the classroom, he has served as the co-director of the residential life program, and he continues to work in the admission office. He is the head coach for boys' varsity hockey and the boys' junior varsity golf coach. He loves to spend time with his wife, Caroline, and their two boys, Ryan and Liam, at their summer home on the southern coast of Maine.
