Year Appointed: 1986
Jon earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Lafayette College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn a master’s degree in sociology from Harvard University, where he specialized in the sociology of professions and the sociology of education. Inspired by two summers of teaching at Cushing Academy, Jon changed tracks and left his Ph.D. program in sociology to begin a full-time career teaching math at a boarding school.
At Taft, Jon taught a variety of classes, lived at HDT4, and directed several intramural sports. His math teaching has ranged from geometry to AB advanced placement calculus. He also led an independent study class in classical social theory. As technology coordinator, Jon combined his longtime interests in meteorology and technology by developing an independent-study course in atmospheric science, which he later co-taught as an upper school elective. In addition, Jon worked in the Information Technology Department at Taft, where he began the process of upgrading the phone system, networking the campus and adding a high-speed connection to the Internet.
Jon was given a sabbatical in 1999 to begin study in clinical social work. He earned a master’s degree in the field from Columbia University in 2001, and his license to practice independently as a clinical social worker in 2003.
Jon served as an interscholastic referee with the Western Connecticut Soccer Officials Association for many years. He has been an active member of the Connecticut Lacrosse Officials Association since 1992. Jon met his wife, Amy Feldman, while she was teaching music at Taft. They married in 1995 and live in nearby Woodbury, Connecticut.
