Diane Fountas

Title: Medical Director of the Martin Health Center

Department: Health Center

Email:

Phone: 860-

Appointed: 2012

Degree: Dartmouth College, B.A., M.D

Bio:

Dr. Diane Fountas is certainly not new to Taft. In assuming the role as director of the Martin Health Center, she makes the transition from Taft’s consulting pediatrician to being on campus full-time as our health director and physician. She believes that medicine has been and continues to be her calling. At age five, she announced to a patriarchal family that she would be a doctor, and she has never wavered from that position. She graduated valedictorian of her Attleboro, MA, high school class, and then became a member of the second class of woman accepted to Dartmouth College. She graduated with a B.A.in Biology and then earned an M.D. from Dartmouth’s medical program. From there, she completed a pediatric internship and residency at the Primary Care Pediatric program in Waterbury, CT, a primary care program under the oversight of the University of Connecticut; and then served as chief resident for this program. She worked for the Department of Public Health on a public health scholarship, became board certified and a fellow in the Academy of Pediatrics, and then opened her own private practice in Watertown, CT. She moved her private practice to larger office space in Waterbury, CT, where she works through the present. During her 25 years of medical practice, she has been chair of the pediatricians of the Greater Waterbury area and acting chair of the Department of Pediatrics at St Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury. She has participated on many boards as a child advocate, including the Child Guidance Clinic and Special Olympics of Connecticut. In 2004, she was named Woman of the Year by Girls Inc. of Waterbury. She continues as a medical director to the Child Abuse Interdisciplinary Team of Greater Waterbury and has been trained to perform forensic medical exams. She has been named by the Woodward/White researchers as a “Top Doctor of Connecticut” twelve times; and she’s been named to the “Top Doctors in America” four times. In addition to serving Taft as its consulting pediatrician since 2005, she has served and will continue to serve as medical director of Westover School. In addition to her academic and professional achievements, she brings an understanding of the connection of academics and athletics, having been a collegiate All-American in swimming, having been inducted into the Attleboro High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and having earned the distinguished Dartmouth honor of the “Wearers of the Green.” She brings a desire for wellness and health and believes that secondary schools need to have model of a primary care akin to private practice. This model began when Lisa Keys and she began their work in the Taft Health Center; and her goal is to improve this model by making Taft’s Health Center one to be emulated.

Appointed: 2001

Degree: B.A., M.A., Trinity; Ph.D., University of Connecticut

Bio:

"I'm Nobody! Who are you?/Are you - Nobody - too?" Emily Dickinson's poem became a playful saying in my family as I grew up, and it seems so appropriate to begin my short biography with these words. While I will list my educational background and teaching experience, the truth is that I learned nearly everything from my parents - Anthony and Shirley Zaccara - and my Hungarian and Italian grandparents, great-grandparents, and great aunts and uncles. I was lucky enough to have been born as one of the oldest of the numerous grandchildren, and so I knew many of the "ancients," and sat on the floor at their feet to hear the old stories over an over again. One of the best pieces of wisdom I received was from my father: "No amount of reading will mean anything if you don't love people. You have to love people or the rest of the book learning adds up to nothing."

My parents were Fairfield-County nomads who moved nine times within and between the following towns: Newtown, Stratford, Trumbull and Brookfield (where I went to high school). I have three siblings, who are my close friends: Leslie, Glenn and Adam. My father passed away the year before I came to Taft, but my mother continues to be a spirited inspiration and the top sales person in her real estate office in Brookfield.

I love to write critical essays, and I have published a few on Mark Twain. My teaching experience began at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, and then continued at Rye Country Day School, Avon Public High School, the University of Connecticut, Trinity College, the Winsor School (in Boston), and finally, at Taft. Taft has been an integral part of my family ever since my two brothers attended the school. I am the English Department Head and have served as a mid class dean, a volleyball coach, a dorm parent, an intramural running coach and a member of the Global Leadership and Spiritual Life committees. In the summers, I work for a month at the MMLA (Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy) as the site director in Poultney, Vermont, and then spend August at my house in Cohasset, Massachusetts, with my two sons, Bryce and Keefe, and our dogs Dakota and Tahoe. Bryce is graduating from Colorado College with a degree in international political economy and looking forward to moving to Denver and working before gradaute school. Keefe is a midshipman at Annapolis, rowing on the Division I Crew team.
