Parents Weekend

Dear Parents of Taft Students,

I wish you a very happy new year.  We have started the winter term in exciting fashion, as we opened the new west dining hall.  It is a spectacular room, a great hall that will bring students and faculty together for years to come.  The entire HDT project is going well, and we will essentially be finished in April:  three dining halls, a new academic wing with classrooms and offices, kitchen and servery, ADA compliance, life and fire safety improvements, and so on.  It is a very exciting and historic moment for Taft, and I am glad you are part of it.  Put simply, not since a century ago when Horace Taft commissioned Bertram Goodhue to design this original building has the school so completely transformed itself.

I write formally to invite you to our Winter Parents' Day on Saturday, February 20.  The day is like our Fall Parents' Day, one to visit classes, chat with teachers, watch games and see and hear the drama and music of Taft.  The drama and music faculty will lead students in “Art from the Heart,” an evening of dance, song and drama, with various performances on campus by the Collegium Musicum, the Jazz Ensemble, the Chamber Ensemble, and Taft Dancers.  The winter play will be a production of “Flaming Idiots,” a highly entertaining and fast-paced farce by Tom Rooney involving the challenges that two ex-postal workers face when they hire a hit man to help boost business at their failing restaurant.  And as is tradition, Saturday evening during the reception in the Woolworth Faculty Room, there will be performances by our two student a capella groups.  Details will be in the parent day program you will pick up here, and it looks to be a terrific day.  Since it is a busy day for everyone, if you have a specific concern for the class dean or advisor, I would suggest calling or emailing beforehand.

For planning purposes, please return the enclosed postcard to the Alumni Office by Wednesday, February 10.  I look forward to seeing many of you at Taft, and I send best wishes.

Sincerely,

William R. MacMullen ’78, headmaster
