H vs NMH School
35-47 L
- This was a close game much of the way -- 23-20 at the half and 34-33 with under six minutes to go -- but it took an unfortunate turn for the home team when Taft's shooting went ice cold down the stretch of this New England Quarter-final Class A playoff game. With just over five minutes left, a short jumper by Madison Haskins (3 points) put the Rhinos up one. It would be Taft's last field goal of the contest. The Big Red defended hard but could only get so many stops, and Northfield Mount Hermon hit some tough shots to slowly put the game away. Katie Harpin led Taft with 9 points, Maggie O'Neil netted 6, Taylor Peucker and Ashley Petrarca scored 5 each, Lindsay Karcher (ten rebounds) had 4, Lexi Dwyer had a bucket and Dominique Moise hit a free throw.
- Thank you to all the parents and fans among faculty and students for their support over the course of a season which by virtually any measure was a success. Another Founders League championship and a trip to the New Englands were goals set by the team in December -- and achieved in February. More important, this group was a pleasure for Coach Moriah Petersen and me to coach. Seniors Lexi Dwyer, Ellen Kalnins, Ashley Petrarca, Alex Pite, Taylor Peucker, and captain Lindsay Karcher set a hard-working but fun-loving tone early on; as a result, the team improved substantially at both ends as the season progressed. And while they will have a tough act to follow, rising seniors Katie Harpin, Morgan Manz and Maggie O'Neil, rising junior Dominique Moise, and soon-to-be sophomores Lauren Drakeley and Madison Haskins are a solid core around which to build looking to 2012-'13.

A vs Hotchkiss School
44-43 W
- Maggie O'Neil nailed a long 3-pointer with five seconds to play to lift the Rhinos to a one-point victory in Lakeville -- Taft's third win over Hotchkiss this season. Her clutch shot nullified a remarkable, crowd-pleasing second-half comeback by Hotchkiss, who trailed by 12 at the half and was still behind 36-26 with about five minutes to play. But Taft turnovers and cold shooting, combined with hot shooting by the home team, fueled a Bearcat run, and Hotchkiss took the lead twice in the last minute. The winning shot came after a missed free-throw by Hotchkiss, a rebound by Lindsay Karcher (one of her 9 on the day) and some crisp ball movement at the Taft end, culminating in Maggie's 3-ball from straight on; her third of the game (she also had nine boards). Ashley Petrarca led Taft in scoring with 12 critical first-half points, including three 3s of her own. Madison Haskins was big off the bench with 7 points and 5 rebounds, while Taylor Peucker netted 5 and pulled down 9 boards. Katie Harpin shrugged off a minor injury to contribute 6 points, 5 caroms and 4 assists, while Alex Pite (5 points) combined with Lexi Dwyer to hold Hotchkiss' leading scorer to 6 points for the afternoon. Taft will likely play in the Class A New England playoffs starting this coming Wednesday. Please check this space for details.

H vs Berkshire School
31-38 L
- One day removed from defeating one Class B power (Porter's), Taft took on a second Class B power at home on our Senior Day...and fell just short. The Big Red played sound enough defense to be there at end, but couldn't muster enough offense -- including a 10-for-24 effort from the foul line -- to catch the visiting Berkshire Bears, who hit their foul shots in the last 30 seconds to seal the game. Seniors Lexi Dwyer, Ellen Kalnins, Lindsay Karcher, Ashley Petrarca and Alex Pite started each half and played outstanding defense, especially against Berkshire's talented perimeter players. The team has two days to re-group before the regular season finale against Hotchkiss in Lakeville.

H vs Miss Porter's School
45-37 W
- The Girls' Varsity Basketball Team scored one of its most dramatic home victories in years, besting Miss Porter's School to win the Founders League title outright and remain undefeated in league play for the second consecutive season. Down 20-14 with a few minutes to play before halftime, the Rhinos battled back to even the score by intermission, hit the first basket of the second half, and never trailed again. Porter's did whittle an eleven-point Taft lead to just two at 37-35 with three-and-a-half minutes to play, and they had a player at the line with a chance to tie the game. But she missed the front half of a one-and-one, Taft secured the rebound...and a few seconds later Maggie O'Neil calmly knocked down her third 3-pointer of the game to extend the lead to five. The Big Red's defense took care of the rest. Chief among those defenders were Alex Pite and Lexi Dwyer, who tag-teamed to severely limit the easy looks allowed Porter's leading scorer. At the offensive end, the scoring was, for this team, uncharacteristically concentrated as just four players scored, with three in double figures. Katie Harpin scored all 4 of her points and collected all four of her blocks in the second half while O'Neil netted 13 to go with her eight rebounds. But it was our "bigs" who carried us today. Captain Lindsay Karcher banged her way to 10 points and ten rebounds while Taylor Peucker was dominant with 18 points and sixteen caroms. The team will need another exceptional collective effort tomorrow as Class B power Berkshire, looking to avenge a January loss to Taft, visits Watertown.

A vs Choate Rosemary Hall
33-40 L
The Rhinos' winning streak came to an abrupt halt Saturday afternoon in Wallingford as the Wild Boars of Choate, on their Senior Day, played inspired basketball and defeated the visitors by seven. Down eight at the half, Taft cut the lead to two with about eight minutes to play. But Choate responded with the first of several clutch, long-range jumpers they would hit to keep the game just out of reach for the Big Red, who could not string together baskets from the field or from the line (where the team shot 3 for 11) all day.
Taylor Peucker
was the team's lone offensive bright spot; she poured in 18 points, and eight of her fourteen rebounds were at the offensive end. She'll need much more help from her teammates than she got today if Taft is to challenge an exceptionally strong Miss Porter's team in Watertown this Tuesday.

H vs Williston Northampton School
64-35 W
- Playing at home for the fourth straight game and enjoying a hot shooting day, the Big Red ran its winning streak to eleven in a row. Morgan Manz, Maggie O'Neil (seven rebounds, four assists) and Madison Haskins led the Rhinos' scoring punch with 17, 13 and 13 points, respectively. Lindsay Karcher had 8 points, seven boards and five steals. Ashley Petrarca netted 6, Taylor Peucker contributed 5 and Katie Harpin chipped in with a field goal. Taft's re-match with Choate is this Saturday in Wallingford.

H vs Hotchkiss School
59-38 W
- The Big Red, taking advantage of a Hotchkiss team that was missing one of its best players, jumped out to an 11-0 lead and held a double-digit advantage the rest of the way. The Rhinos remain undefeated in Founders League play and the team's win streak now stands at ten straight. Dominating inside all day was Taylor Peucker, who scored 18 points to go with five boards and two assists. Morgan Manz (three steals) contributed 9 points and four boards, Maggie O'Neil tallied 8 points and five assists, Ashley Petrarca nailed a couple of 3 balls, Alex Pite netted 5, Katie Harpin (three assists) and Lindsay Karcher each had 4, and Dominique Moise scored 3. Taft again squares off against Hotchkiss in two weeks -- but it has four tough games prior to that re-match, starting with a home tilt versus Williston-Northampton this Wednesday at 4:00 PM.

H vs Westminster School
42-25 W
- The Rhinos picked up another Founders League victory and extended the team's winning streak to nine straight in a home tilt versus Westminster. This was not a pretty game by any stretch as Taft struggled to hit shots against Westminster's zone -- although Maggie O'Neil (9 points) and Ashley Petrarca (5 points) did hit a few from long range -- and when the Big Red got the ball inside, the bunnies just wouldn't fall. Taft will have to play better in all respects this Saturday if it hopes to best arch rival Hotchkiss, which is having its strongest season in years, in another Founders League contest.

H vs Kent School
56-31 W
- The Big Red's winning streak continued into the new month today as the team clamped down defensively against the visitors from Kent, holding them to 8 first-half points. And while the Rhinos let up too much on the defensive end after the break, their lead was 20-plus points with nine or ten minutes to go, and playing time was fairly evenly distributed down the stretch. Maggie O'Neil led Taft in scoring with 9 points. Morgan Manz had an atypical "double double" with 10 rebounds and a remarkable 11 assists to go with her 7 points. Joining her with 7 were Lindsay Karcher and Madison Haskins. Just behind them was Taylor Peucker with 6 points. Ashley Petrarca, Alex Pite, Dominique Moise and Lexi Dwyer chipped in with 5, 4, 4, and 3, respectively, and Katie Harpin (seven boards) and Lauren Drakeley (two for two from the line) each had 2.
Five of Taft's seven remaining games will be played in Watertown, starting with Westminster next Wednesday after the long weekend break.

A vs Sacred Heart School
54-31 W
- Competing in its second game in less than 24 hours following a compressed academic week and, for the team's three juniors, a morning of SAT-taking prior to the long drive to Greenwich, the Rhinos looked a bit sluggish early on. Meanwhile, the partisan "Heart" crowd boisterously backed their team, which played with energy and passion. Taft took just a 21-19 lead into the halftime locker room. But the second half was all Big Red as the visitors held the opposition to just four field goals while heating up at the offensive end. Maggie O'Neil (13 points) and Taylor Peucker (12 points, six rebounds) paced Taft in scoring, Morgan Manz (9 points, 11 boards, five assists and two steals) and Lindsay Karcher (8 points, five caroms, a pair of assists) played excellent all-around games, and Dominique Moise (5 points), Katie Harpin (4, and four boards) and Lexi Dwyer (3 points and six hustling rebounds) rounded out the team's scoring. Kent, looking to avenge a loss to Taft earlier this month, visits Watertown this Wednesday.

H vs Choate Rosemary Hall
56-32 W
- The Big Red picked up its sixth straight win overall and moved to 4-0 in Founders League play with a home victory over Choate in the first of two meetings between these teams. The Wild Boars were missing an important player, but they played aggressively at both ends, giving the Rhinos all they could handle and serving notice that the re-match in Wallingford in a few weeks will be a battle. Morgan Manz paced Taft at the offensive end with 15 points. She also pulled down eight rebounds, as did Taylor Peucker, who netted 8 as well. Both Ashley Petrarca and Maggie O'Neil drained two 3-balls for their six points while captain Lindsay Karcher chipped in with 5 points and five boards. Lexi Dwyer, Alex Pite and Katie Harpin contributed 4 points each, and both Dominique Moise and Madison Haskins added a field goal. The team travels south to Greenwich Saturday to take on a much-improved Sacred Heart team.

A vs Loomis Chaffee School
47-46 W
- With the game knotted at 46 and no time left at the end of overtime, Maggie O'Neil calmly sank the second of two free throws to pull out the victory for the visiting Rhinos in a re-match of these two teams, who had battled at Taft just four days ago. The dramatic free throw was set up by Morgan Manz' offensive rebound and put-back to tie the game up with just five seconds to go in OT. Loomis turned the ball over inbounding it, but a Taft shot missed the mark and went out of bounds with just .5 seconds to go. This time, Loomis committed a violation on their inbounds play, and Taft had the ball under its own hoop. Katie Harpin found Maggie, who was fouled as she attempted a catch-and-finish lay-up. Manz (9 points, ten rebounds) and Taylor Peucker (9 points) led the balanced Big Red attack. Just behind them were Alex Pite (8 second-half points including a timely three-ball in the OT, three assists), Katie Harpin (7 points, five boards, two steals), and Ashley Petrarca (6 points on a couple of deep 3s, two assists), while 2 points each were contributed by O'Neil, Lindsay Karcher, Lauren Drakeley, and Dominique Moise. The Wild Boars of Choate visit Watertown this coming Friday at 4:30.

H vs Loomis Chaffee School
58-34 W
- On a snowy day which saw many games across the region canceled or postponed, the Loomis Chaffee Pelicans weathered the trip to Watertown -- and ran into a hot-shooting home team at Taft. Maggie O'Neil (9 points, five rebounds, three steals) opened the scoring with a theft and length-of-the-court lay-up. Several minutes later, after 3 point buckets by Morgan Manz (16 points, three assists) and Alex Pite and old-fashioned three-point plays by Lindsay Karcher (5 points, eleven boards) and Taylor Peucker (11 points, six caroms), Taft enjoyed a double-digit lead it would never relinquish. While each Taft player scored, contributing significantly to the win were Lexi Dwyer (2 points, three rebounds and two assists), Katie Harpin (2 points, four boards), Ashley Petrarca (5 points, three rebounds and two assists) and Madison Haskins (2 points, five caroms, three assists). The Rhinos move to 3-0 in the Founders League and 7-4 overall, but they face Loomis again -- this time in Windsor -- on Wednesday.

A vs Kent School
50-37 W
The Big Red picked up its third consecutive win and its second Founders League victory (against zero losses) at Kent today. Still stinging from last year's season-ending defeat in the New Englands at the hands of the Lions in Kent, the Rhinos were overly determined and did not play with composure in the early going. Down 11-3, Taft gathered itself after a timeout and started to climb back into the game. A late first half jumper by Ashley Petrarca (7 points) and two tough lay-ups by Dominique Moise (4 points) saw the visitors take a 21-20 lead into the locker room. The second half started off sloppily at both ends, but the Rhinos rode the inspired play of senior captain Lindsay Karcher (11 points, ten boards, two steals and countless hustle plays) to a ten point advantage with about nine minutes to play, and Taft's lead remained in double digits the rest of the way. Joining Lindsay in a double-digit rebounding effort with ten was Taylor Peucker (7 points). Morgan Manz netted all of her 8 points in the second stanza, as did Maggie O'Neil (4 points plus seven rebounds and two assists). Alex Pite scored Taft's first five points of the game on long-range jumpers and defended Kent's talented guard well, while Madison Haskins and Ellen Kalnins rounded out the scoring with a field goal each. The team faces Loomis at home on Saturday in the first of back-to-back games. Team Record: 6-4

A vs Berkshire School
44-38 W
- The Rhinos moved above .500 for the season with a tough road win against a talented team. The Berkshire Bears rode their dominant post player to a 22-18 halftime advantage. But as Taft stayed composed, moved the ball and, at the other end, tried to challenge every shot the home team attempted, it scored the first seven points of the second half and never relinquished the lead thereafter -- although the game stayed close throughout. Morgan Manz played her best all-around game in her one-and-a-half seasons with the Big Red; she scored 13 points, pulled down fourteen rebounds, ran the show on offense without committing a single turnover -- and defended Berkshire's best player most of the game. Taylor Peucker was impressive all night inside, gathering eleven boards to go with her 11 points while her fellow "big," captain Lindsay Karcher, played her typical workman-like and unselfish game with seven rebounds and a pair of assists. Alex Pite (2 points) and Lexi Dwyer joined forces to limit the Bears' point guard to a single field goal, just as Maggie O'Neil (7 points, four assists, three boards) and Ashley Petrarca (4 points and a beautiful assist) combined to keep Berkshire's wing player in single digits on the night. Madison Haskins (3 for 4 from the free throw line) and Katie Harpin (3 points, five rebounds) contributed quality minutes, and undersized inside player Ellen Kalnins found her teammates well and scrapped her way to three rebounds in limited time. This was a team win which should help the players realize that if they dig in on defense and are aggressive but smart on offense, they can play with any opponent.

H vs Deerfield Academy
59-36 W
Girls' Varsity Basketball picked up a win in their first home game of 2012 -- but it wasn't as resounding as the score would indicate. Just about every shot the home team threw up over the first several minutes went in, and the lead was soon double digits. But the visitors -- tall, athletic, determined and well-coached -- did not fold, and they bested Taft in the second and third "quarters" of the game. But Deerfield would score its last points with seven minutes to play while the Big Red's hot hand returned, and the game's final seventeen points went to the home team.
Maggie O'Neil played an exceptional all-around game with 15 points, six steals and four assists. Right behind her in the scoring column with 12 points each were Morgan Manz and Taylor Peucker; Morgan also had five assists while Taylor pulled down nine rebounds. Alex Pite nailed two 3-balls and a nifty left-handed layup for her 8 points, Ashley Petrarca had a trifecta and a lay-up for 5, Katie Harpin put in a long field goal and Lexi Dwyer contributed a free throw.
The team looks to move above .500 in a night game this Saturday evening on the road against Berkshire.

A vs Suffield Academy
51-42 L
-
Improving on past performances, the Rhinos' offense proved stronger on Saturday at Suffield, but it wasn't quite enough to overcome the scoring of the home team's shifty point guard and solid supporting cast. Down four at the half, Taft kept it close until midway through the second stanza when a few Rhino turnovers helped fuel a Suffield run, which extended their lead to ten points. Thereafter, the Big Red fought but couldn't get closer than six points down. It was a difficult loss but one with some offensive silver lining.
Morgan Manz and Taylor Peucker each scored 11 points a piece, and Taylor also contributed eleven rebounds. Katie Harpin netted 6 on three short jumpers, Lexi Dwyer had 5, Ashley Petrarca contributed a 3 ball and Maggie O'Neil sank a field goal. The team hopes that playing a game on its home court for the first time in over a month will bring good fortune this Wednesday against Deerfield.

A vs Pomfret School
22-29 L
- The Big Red started 2012 at Pomfret the same way it ended 2011: tough defensively and ice cold offensively. But despite holding a second straight opponent under thirty points, the Rhinos couldn't get enough shots to fall to get the win. With a strong Suffield Academy team looming this Saturday, Taft has little time to get untracked.

A vs Hotchkiss School
32-27 W
- At noon on Friday, rivals Taft and Hotchkiss -- who already play each other twice each February -- found themselves squaring off in a consolation game at the Suffield Holiday Tournament. And when I write "squaring off," that's what I mean; this was one of the most physical high school girls' games I've ever witnessed. Forty-four personal fouls were registered -- and the refs weren't even calling it close. Hotchkiss led by one with about four minutes to go, and the game easily could have gone either way. In the end the difference was a few clutch jumpers by Ashley Petrarca (8 points) and 3-for-4, down-the-stretch free throw shooting by Taylor Peucker.
was named to the All-Tournament team for her inside presence at both ends and overall leadership.
- Thank you to all the parents for their support at the games, to the Peuckers for hosting the players at their house Thursday evening, and to Lisa Perkins (Lindsay's mom) for taping the Marianapolis and Hotchkiss games.
- At 3-2, the team heads into the holiday break knowing it can compete with every squad on its schedule if it digs in at the defensive end all game and takes care of the ball while seeking high percentage shots on offense. Our first game after the break is at Pomfret.

A vs St. Andrew's School
52-29 W
- The Big Red emerged from exam week looking surprisingly sharp in defeating St. Andrew's of Rhode Island 52-29 in an opening round game of the Suffield Academy Holiday Tournament. Appropriately enough, Suffield graduate (and Taft post-graduate) Taylor Peucker led the Rhinos with a double double: 13 points and eleven rebounds. But this was a team effort at both ends of the floor, and everyone contributed. Maggie O'Neil and Morgan Manz netted 9 points each, Island School returnee Katie Harpin shook the rust off her game to chip in with 6 points, Lindsay Karcher and Alex Pite had 5 a piece, and Madison Haskins, Ashley Petrarca and Dominique Moise also scored.

H vs Kingswood-Oxford School
50-24 W
- In their second game of the season and initial Founders League contest, the Rhinos picked up their first win of the 2011-'12 campaign Wednesday against the visitors from Kingswood-Oxford. K-O's offensive style was aggressive and dribble-drive oriented, and Taft committed too many fouls throughout the game. Nonetheless, the Big Red controlled the glass at both ends, limiting the visitors' second chance opportunities while also fueling several fast-break opportunities of their own -- a key to the victory.
Senior captain Lindsay Karcher led the way for the home team, garnering eleven rebounds to go with her 9 points. Also netting 9 were junoir Morgan Manz and senior Ashley Petrarca; Ashley also had four assists and ran the floor extremely well. Freshman Madison Haskins (7 points) and senior Taylor Peucker (6 points) provided inside scoring punch, seniors Alex Pite (2 points) and Lexi Dwyer (3 assists) hassled K-O's point guard most of the game, junior Maggie O'Neil played aggressive defense and blocked two shots, senior Ellen Kalnins banged underneath for a bucket and three boards, while sophomore Dominique Moise (4 points) and freshman Lauren Drakeley (2 points) played hard and well off the bench.
- After a week off for exams, the team is back in action next Wednesday at the Suffield Holiday Tournament against New England Class E defending champions St. Andrew's of Rhode Island.

H vs Nobles and Greenough School
31-56 L
- A 10-8 game at the seven minute mark of the first half quickly got away from the home team as the Rhinos failed to execute at the offensive end and at the defensive end allowed Nobles too many open looks. The result was a 19-5 run by the visitors to close out the half, and the sixteen-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome for the Big Red in the second stanza against the tall, strong, quick, aggressive, well-coached Nobles squad.

22-27 L
- Drawing inspiration from the dozens of Taft students, faculty and parents who traveled to Kent to support the team, the Rhinos mustered their best defensive game of the season in holding the high-powered Lions to just seven field goals and 27 points overall. But Kent's defense was equally fierce. And even when a Taft player did shake free for an open look or get to the free throw line, the shots just would not fall. A one-woman, late-game rally by captain Claire Wilson, who scored 7 points down the stretch and 10 for the game, was not enough to get the Big Red over the hump.
- The team represented Taft basketball and the school well in the loss, playing with enormous pride and effort. In that sense, it was a proper bookend to a thrilling season.

- Three-year varsity player Erin McPhee got the first start of her Taft career on Senior Day and wasted no time demonstrating her specialty, hitting two 3-pointers to help propel the Rhinos to an early lead they would never relinquish. Fellow senior Grace Kalnins -- who fittingly scored Taft's last basket of the game on an assist from McPhee -- contributed mostly at the other end, making life difficult for Hotchkiss' primary ball handler. Assistant captain and senior Kate Karraker poured in 13 points to lead the Big Red in scoring as she has so many times during her three-year Taft career. And captain Claire Wilson, guarding Hotchkiss' best player, fought through foul trouble to contribute 4 points to go with two assists.
- The 2010-'11Rhinos finish the regular season at 20-2, which ties them for the most regular season wins in Taft girls' varsity basketball history. No matter what happens in the New Englands, which begin this Wednesday, every player on the team should feel she contributed significantly to a season that surpassed the expectations of players, parents and coaches. A vs Miss Porter's School
45-38 W
The Big Red traveled to Farmington for its annual "off day" game against Porter's, which is enjoying a successful season. With a chance to finish the 2010-'11 campaign undefeated in Founders League play on the line, Taft came out tentatively -- and the result was an eight point Porter's lead at the half. But the Rhinos were more aggressive defensively after the intermission, and that aggressiveness carried over into the offensive end, where better ball movement led to open looks...and made shots. A 12-1 Taft run in the middle of the half transformed a seven point Porter's lead (31-24) into a four point Rhino lead (36-32). Taft took the lead for good on a Katie Harpin 3, Ashley Petrarca and Lexi Dwyer soon followed with 3 balls of their own, and the defense did the rest. A quality road win was a satisfying way for Taft to win the Founders League title outright for the first time in six years.
Kate Karraker led Taft with 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. But she had plenty of help, especially in the second half, from Harpin (11 points, four boards three assists), Petrarca (7 points), Dwyer (5 points, four rebounds), Morgan Manz (4 points and nine rebounds) and Claire Wilson (3 points, three assists, two steals).

H vs Choate Rosemary Hall
50-29 W
The visitors from Wallingford started two players who had not suited up in the teams' first contest a few weeks ago. That plus Taft's cold shooting in the second half meant this was a closer game than the first affair. But despite conceding a few layups against the Wild Boars' active, back door-based offense, the Rhinos' defense was stingy overall and the result was a reasonably comfortable Taft win.
Kate Karraker and Morgan Manz led the Big Red with 15 and 14 points, respectively, with Manz also contributing seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Katie Harpin's eleven rebounds included eight at the offensive end and nicely complemented her 5 points and three steals. Claire Wilson hit a field goal, Grace Kalnins (two assists) and Alex Pite (two free throws) garnered two steals a piece, while Lexi Dwyer had 4 points to go with her two boards, two assists and one steal. Ashley Petrarca nailed a 3 ball, Lindsay Karcher went three-for-four from the line and collected three caroms, Josie Traberg had a nifty driving lay-up, Erin McPhee ripped down two rebounds, and Ellen Kalnins gave her usual all defensively.
The Rhinos have a three game week to finish up the season, starting with a tough road game against Porter's on Tuesday.

- As hot as the Rhinos shot from the opening tip a few weeks ago at home against Kent, that's how cold the team shot in the Kent gym last night. The Big Red managed just three first-half field goals -- although it must be noted that Kent's stingy defense was as responsible for Taft's inability to score as was Taft's plain cold shooting. At the other end, the Rhinos defended well early on, holding Kent's high-powered offense to just twenty-two first half points. But in the second stanza, the Kent players' ability to create their own shots led to several easy scoring opportunities for the Saints, and the game was pretty well decided with many minutes left to play. Morgan Manz, the sole offensive bright spot for the Big Red, scored 20 points. Taft travels north to face Williston-Northampton on Wednesday.

- The baskets in Lakeville historically have been kind to the Rhinos. Today they were not. Up by just three at the half, Taft relied on its defense to generate offense after the intermission and eventually led by twenty plus before going cold again down the stretch. In short, it was an ugly offensive game for the Big Red but the defense was strong enough (most of the team’s twenty-two steals came in the second half) that the result was a comfortable win.
- Kate Karraker, with 15, was the sole Rhino to score in double figures and she also led the team in rebounds with six. Maggie O’Neil had 7 points and five steals, both Claire Wilson and Katie Harpin had 6 points and five steals, Morgan Manz netted 6 and assisted on five, Grace Kalnins contributed two much-needed jumpers off the bench, and Lexi Dwyer, Lindsay Karcher and Ellen Kalnins each hit one field goal.
- Taft’s much-anticipated rematch against Kent – postponed from a couple weeks ago – is this coming Monday in Kent.

- Eleven days removed from its last game, the Big Red showed few signs of rust in Simsbury today against the Martlets. Morgan Manz (17 points), Kate Karraker (15) and Claire Wilson (10) shot welll and reached double digits in scoring. Also impressive were Grace Kalnins (9 points), Katie Harpin (7), Ashley Petrarca and Erin McPhee (5 each). The offensive play of the game was executed by Josie Traberg, who hit Kalnins on a needle-threading interior bounce pass for a left-handed finish by Grace just before halftime.

Despite not shooting well as a team in its home gym and perhaps experiencing something of a let-down after its road win over Choate the day before, the Rhinos nonetheless played solid defense in downing Convent of the Sacred Heart of Greenwich on Saturday. Morgan Manz scored all 8 of her points to start the game (she also had eight rebounds and three assists). Kate Karraker then heated up and ultimately led Taft in scoring with 17 points. Claire Wilson and Ashley Petrarca had 4 points each, Lexi Dwyer had 3, and Grace Kalnins, Josie Traberg, Katie Harpin and Maggie O'Neil (who had five boards and three assists) all scored a bucket.

- The Big Red rebounded well from Wednesday's loss, playing a more disciplined and intelligent game in Wallingford in a rare Friday afternoon contest. Katie Harpin played aggressively and shot well from the opening tap, and led the team with 13 points. Three other Rhinos scored in double figures: Morgan Manz and Maggie O'Neil netted 12 each and Kate Karraker had 10. Claire Wilson had 7 on three jumpers, Ashley Petrarca 5 on a beatiful post move and a three ball, Grace Kalnins 4 on two long jump shots, Erin McPhee 3 on a high-arcing shot from deep, and Lindsay Karcher 2 on a baseline dribble-drive-and-finish. Finally, hard-nosed Lexi Dwyer drew two second-half offensive fouls long after the game was decided.

H vs Loomis Chaffee School
45-49 (OT) L
- The Big Red dropped its first game of the season to a Pelicans team that crept back from a nine-point, halftime deficit and throughout the game executed with more poise than did the Rhinos, who were plagued by turnovers (eighteen for the game) and generally poor decision-making with the ball. Loomis led by four with a few minutes to play, Taft knotted it at 37 each, then Loomis was back up by three with less than twenty seconds to play when Kate Karraker (Taft's leading scorer with 19 points) nailed a step-back 3 pointer to tie it up and delight the loud and partisan home crowd. Taft then struck first in overtime, with Maggie O'Neil (5 points, seven rebounds) knocking down a 3 ball from the corner off an inside-out feed from Katie Harpin (9 points, three rebounds, three assists). But Loomis' point guard (who led all scorers with 26 points) drained a long 3 of her own to make it a "new game" again -- and from then on free throw shooting was the difference as neither tired team could muster a field goal. Loomis was four-for-four in the extra period, while Taft was zero-for-three.
- Taft has a chance to apply lessons it may have learned about execution under pressure this Friday at Choate and Saturday at home against Convent of the Sacred Heart.

A vs Loomis Chaffee School
59-47 W
- In the first of consecutive games against each other, the Rhinos weathered an early shooting exhibition by the Pelicans, gained the lead early in the second half, and sustained it through the final horn. Loomis led 32-23 about twelve minutes into the contest. The Big Red then went on a 15-0 run to close out the first half and start the second. Loomis cut into the lead several times, but the combination of foul trouble to one of their key players and Taft's accurate shooting was too much for them to overcome.
- Sophomore Maggie O'Neil led Taft, playing probably her strongest game to date as a Rhino, finishing with 17 points (including five for six from the free throw line), six assists and four rebounds. But she got plenty of help from Morgan Manz (13, one and three), Kate Karraker (13, two and four), Katie Harpin (7, two and four) and Claire Wilson (3, four and one). Important contributions off the bench came from Ashley Petrarca (who had 4 critical points to help keep us close when Loomis couldn't miss early on), Lexi Dwyer (2 points), Grace Kalnins and Lindsay Karcher.

- The Rhinos came out shooting and within a few minutes surged to a double digit lead they would never relinquish against the talented visitors from Kent. The lead was fifteeen at the half after Kent's point guard nailed a 35-footer as the buzzer sounded, and the blue and gray cut the Big Red's lead to ten a few minutes into the second stanza at 40-30. But an old-fashioned three-pointer by assistant captain Kate Karraker off a feed by captain Claire Wilson halted Kent's run, Taft's collective hot hand returned as did its concentration on transition defense...and Kent did not get close again.
- The Wilson and Karraker combination was devastating offensively for Taft; Wilson poured in 19 points and dished out four assists while Karraker went for 20. Maggie O'Neil (six rebounds and three assists), Katie Harpin (7 points, six rebounds, two assists) and Morgan Manz (9 points, six rebounds, six assists) played fine all-around games and took care of much of the dirty work inside -- although they were ably assisted by Lindsay Karcher, who provided quality minutes off the bench with 4 points and three boards. Lexi Dwyer (6 points) also checked in and produced, as did Grace Kalnins (two rebounds). In short, this was a big team win over a high-quality opponent.
- But Taft can't rest on its laurels as it faces always-strong Loomis at their place on Saturday.

Shots fell, loose balls found Taft hands, and the visitors couldn't buy a bucket. Morgan Manz (14 points) and Kate Karraker (12) were the Rhinos' two double-digit scorers but fine performances were also turned in by Lindsay Karcher (6 points and twice as many rebounds), Claire Wilson (5 points), Katie Harpin (6 points), Maggie O'Neil (7 points), Ashley Petrarca (4 points) and Alex Pite (3 points). Ellen Kalnins and Josie Traberg (2 points each) were also impressive at both ends over the game's last several minutes.

- The visiting Rhinos came out focused and jumped out to a 14-1 lead at Deerfield...but then got complacent and allowed the home team to climb back into the game. So Taft's lead was just two points at the half. A 26-7 Rhino run to open the second half left the Big Red in command. But Deerfield continued to scrap and started to hit shots, and ultimately Taft's starters had to re-enter the contest with under two minutes to play to put the game away.
- Eleven players scored for Taft. Morgan Manz led the way in all categories, finishing with 12 points, ten rebounds and four assists. Kate Karraker added 9 points and four boards, Katie Harpin had 6 and six, Maggie O'Neil 3 and six, and Claire Wilson dished out three assists to go with her 4 points and three rebounds.

But the Rhinos soon found their offensive rhythm, and by halftime Taft's lead was 26-15. Suffield battled in the second stanza, but the partisan crowd helped the Big Red sustain its lead until the final whistle.
- Morgan Manz (13 points) and Kate Karraker (11) led Taft in scoring. But impressive all-around efforts were also turned in by Maggie O'Neil (8 points, five rebounds, two assists), Claire Wilson (5 points, six boards), Katie Harpin (6 points, four boards, two assists and three steals) and Ashley Petrarca (4 points, three rebounds). Lindsay Karcher (four rebounds) and Lexi Dwyer (five boards) helped out on the glass, while Grace Kalnins and Alex Pite (2 points) were their typical, effective selves pressuring the ball on defense.

- The Rhinos won their home opener this afternoon in a back-and-forth game that featured plenty of hustle but uneven offensive execution by both teams. In the end, Taft's timely shooting -- especially by senior captain Claire Wilson (10 points) and senior assistant captain Kate Karraker (12 points) -- was critical. Still, the victory was very much a team effort. Morgan Manz netted all 7 of her points in the first half and led the team in rebounds (eight) and assists (three). Maggie O'Neil made several big plays in the second half, scoring six of her 8 points then, and pulling down four boards. Lexi Dwyer and Katie Harpin each snared six caroms. Ashley Petrarca and Grace Kalnins were unusually efficient off the bench; Petrarca scored 4 points and hauled in four rebounds while Kalnins also had four boards to go with a couple assists and a free throw. And Erin McPhee dished out an assist and hit a big three-pointer toward the end of the first half.

A battle of two unbeaten teams in the championship game of the Suffield Holiday Tournament was just that – a battle – for the first five or six minutes of the contest, as strong defense and jittery offense at both ends meant no field goals for either team. Taft’s first bucket came in the middle of the first half on a layup by Grace Kalnins (3 points, two steals) off a beautiful feed by Ashley Petrarca, and the team relaxed some after that. But at the half Taft was up by just four.
The first several minutes of the second half would prove decisive. Kate Karraker (9 points, four rebounds, four assists) scored all of her points in a short span on an old-fashioned three point play followed by two 3 balls, and Maggie O’Neil (8 points, six rebounds, two steals) hit a 3 and then a nifty layup to put Taft up by ten. Later in the half, Claire Wilson (11 points, five rebounds) hit a driving layup and a long, two-point field goal. And Katie Harpin (8 points, six rebounds) hit a 3 ball at a critical point to help stifle a Suffield comeback. Meanwhile, Morgan Manz (4 points, six boards, two assists, two steals) was tough inside despite foul trouble and got help in there from Lindsay Karcher, who came off the bench to grab a couple tough caroms. Finally, Lexi Dwyer (1 point, seven boards, three assists) and Kalnins were a tough one-two defensive punch versus Suffield’s dynamic point guard.
A special thank you to Samantha Morrill and team parents Jon Karraker and Dan O’Neil for their help in keeping the scorebook during the tournament, and to parents Linn McPhee and Sandy O’Neil for their videotaping of the Suffield game.
This is the first holiday tournament championship won by a Taft team in my nine-year coaching tenure. And while assistant captain Kate Karraker – who tallied 39 points in Taft’s three games – was named the Most Valuable Player, the wins were total team efforts. Led by captain Claire Wilson, who has already done much to promote team chemistry, each player has dedicated herself to playing aggressive, team-oriented defense, the common denominator in our wins thus far. We’ll need every bit of that defense when we return to Taft in January, as our home opener is against reigning New England Class B champions Pomfret.

- In an opening round game of the Suffield Holiday Tournament between two undefeated teams which have seldom if ever met, the Big Red came away with a win over Marianapolis. Up 29-25 at the half, Taft then clamped down defensively, was fortunate to shoot well, and soon extended its lead into double digits, where it would stay the rest of the contest.
- Leading the way offensively for Taft were Kate Karraker (20 points), Morgan Manz (18 points and eight rebounds), Claire Wilson (8 points) and Maggie O'Neil (8 points and eight boards). Lexi Dwyer (2 points) played outstanding defense on Marianapolis' tough point guard.

A vs Nobles and Greenough School
36-32 W
- For the first time since girls' varsity basketball began opening the season against Nobles six years ago, the Big Red came away with the victory. It was a typical first game in that neither squad could establish much offensive rhythm. But after Nobles came out cold and Taft jumped out to a 9-0 lead, it was the visitor's turn to struggle -- and a prolonged struggle it was as Nobles surged ahead by halftime, 16-13, and was up 25-19 with about seven minutes to play. At that point Nobles' shooting again went cold and Taft went on a decisive 15-4 run: captain Claire Wilson stuck a 12 footer; Morgan Manz drilled four foul shots (both ends of a one-and-one, twice) within a one-minute span; assistant captain Kate Karraker hit a free throw, a driving layup and then a 15 footer; and Manz nailed a pull-up 18 footer and soon after found Katie Harpin on a bullet pass for a lay-up. So while the game revealed weaknesses that Taft needs to concentrate on in practice over the next few days, it also revealed a team-wide determination not to give up even when down several points against a quality opponent in their gym.
- Manz (six rebounds) and Karraker led Taft in scoring with 14 and 11 points, respectively, while Wilson added 3, Harpin 2 to go with five boards, and Maggie O'Neil -- a foul trouble victim -- added 3. Lexi Dwyer (1 point) pulled down five rebounds and played smart and tough at both ends, while Ashley Petrarca chipped in with a timely, second-half bucket.

A vs Hotchkiss School
56-46 W
- The Rhinos usually shoot well in Lakeville but that pattern didn't hold early on as the young and determined Hotchkiss team, bent on avenging its loss in Watertown two weeks ago, held a 20-14 lead toward the end of the first half. Then Taft's defense tightened up as the Hotchkiss rims loosened up, and the Big Red went on a 14-2 run to close out the first half, which ended with Taft ahead 28-22. The third "quarter" saw the Rhinos extend their lead to fifteen points as the team played some of its most effective basketball of the season at the offensive end. But over the last several minutes of the game the Bearcats battled back and came within striking distance: a seven point margin. Down the stretch, 5-for-6 free throw shooting by Claire Wilson (11 points) ensured that Taft would get the win.
- Wilson and Kate Karraker (also 11 points) shared the scoring honors for Taft -- those two also had three assists each -- but it was a team offensive effort. Lexi Dwyer kept Taft in the contest early, scoring all 8 of her points before that 14-2 run. Maggie O'Neil also netted 8 and gathered in six rebounds. Lindsay Karcher scored 6, two of them on a beautiful driving layup in the second half. Grace Kalnins played well in all aspects of the game, scoring 4 points, collecting four boards and dishing out two assists. Alex Pite chipped in with a second half layup. And co-captain Sarah Perda, playing in her last game as a Rhino, went out on a winning note with 6 points and savvy all-around play.
- When a basketball team has lost five players, including three starters and all of its size, to graduation the previous spring, it is safe to say that it is in "re-building" mode -- especially when all but one of the newcomers to the team are lower classmen. Yet this team showed early on that it didn't accept the idea that it wouldn't be able to compete with the stronger teams on its schedule. As a result, it was rarely not in position to win games in the second half this season. Sometimes lack of height or cold shooting or player injury and/or illness were obstacles it could not overcome. But the overall tenor of the team remained positive and the work rate among the players during practice continued to be impressive even when the number of losses reached double digits. The season's final game, then, which allowed this team to actually surpass last year's win total, was simultaneously a reflection of the individual and team progress made since November and, one hopes, a foreshadowing of even better things to come next year, when ten return from the twelve-player roster.

H vs Berkshire School
55-42 W
- The Rhinos bounced back from yesterday's loss to record their second win of the season against Berkshire. Playing its last home game, Taft started slowly but then fed off the energy of Maggie O'Neil, who scored eleven first half points, and some sharp shooting by Kate Karraker from deep. Berkshire hung around, however, and it was just a four point spread at the half: 20-16. A short halftime talk enabled Taft to get back on the floor quickly to get some more shooting in; perhaps that was the reason the Big Red scored thirty-five second half points. Karraker rained in a couple more 3 balls and finished with 20 points for the game, serving notice that she is about fully recovered from her strength-draining illness. Lexi Dwyer -- who spent more time than anyone guarding Berkshire's skilled point guard -- netted all 9 of her points after halftime and demonstrated impressive "ball hunger" on the offensive glass, often keeping balls alive that others then collected. Ashley Petrarca knocked down a 3 and scored 7 for the game, while Grace Kalnins' jumper was the game's last bucket. And O'Neil's numbers for the game were impressive: 14 points, eleven rebounds, three assists, three steals.
- Meanwhile, all game long, senior co-captain Sarah Perda quietly did on Senior Day what she has done better than anyone the past two years: play great help defense while rarely allowing her own man to score. Sarah came out of the game with just a few seconds left to a well-deserved standing ovation.

H vs Miss Porter's School
49-59 L
- The Big Red sunk almost as many field goals in the first half of this game as it had made in the entire game against Choate a few days ago. And Taft's hot shooting didn't let up in the second half as the team hit eight 3 pointers on the day. But all that just wasn't enough to keep pace with the high octane offense of the visitors from Farmington. Most of 17-2 Porter's points came off transition opportunities and free throws (they went to the line twenty-eight times to Taft's seven) as their athleticism and size were too much for Taft in the end. Still, Taft showed heart in keeping it close until the last few minutes and in limiting the easy looks for Porter's most dangerous player.
- Claire Wilson (5 points) guarded that player most of the game (and had the bumps, bruises and exhausted visage in the team room afterward to prove it), Lindsay Karcher (2 points) and Maggie O'Neil (4 points) banged hard against Porter's inside players, and Lexi Dwyer (4 points) reduced the efficacy of Porters' point guard with smart, scrappy defensive play. Offensively, the Rhinos welcomed back from illness Kate Karraker, who led the team with 13 points while co-captain Sarah Perda (6 points) had two big, second-half 3s. But the most pleasant surprise of the day was the output of Erin McPhee. Erin has been luckless much of the season, watching her long-range jumpers hit back rim or rattle around and drop out; today, however, she nailed her first attempt, gained confidence, and finished with 11 points on three 3s and a traditional field goal. Taft's ability to hang around as long as it did was due largely to Erin's unanticipated shot-making.

A vs Choate Rosemary Hall
29-30 L
- Facing a boisterous Senior Day crowd in Wallingford, Taft was looking to sweep the season series against Choate for the first time in four years, having defeated the Wild Boars in Watertown by ten points a few weeks ago. But while the Rhinos' defense was strong, its offense wasn't up to the task. An 18-15 Big Red lead at the half became a 27-19 Choate advantage with just over six minutes to play as Taft missed its first fifteen field goal attempts of the second half. Then, in succession, Claire Wilson (12 points) buried a jumper, Maggie O'Neil (11 points) nailed a 3 and Wilson hit a 3 -- and it was all tied up at 27. Then the lid went back on the basket for Taft; all it could manage down the stretch was two clutch free throws by Grace Kalnins, and Choate won when one of its players dramatically hit a free throw with under a minute to play.
- Accurate shooting comes and goes in basketball, and other than during a two-minute stretch it truly "went" for the Rhinos in the second half of this game. But the team -- and in particular Lindsay Karcher, who defended Choate's strong inside player -- deserves credit for continuing to dig in defensively when it couldn't buy a hoop to continue to give itself a chance to be there at the end. So there is real success for Taft to draw on as it prepares to face an exceptionally talented Miss Porter's team at home this coming Tuesday.

H vs Williston Northampton School
34-42 L
- The Big Red lost a chance to even its record on the season when it let slip a five point, second half lead against Williston at home on Wednesday. The first half was a defensive battle that ended with Williston up 16-12. But the Rhinos -- and Claire Wilson in particular -- came out firing in the second stanza and quickly gained the advantage. The lead changed hands several times and was last knotted at 32 each with about seven minutes to play. After that point, Taft could manage just one bucket while Williston's two all-Western New England players took control, scoring their team's last ten points.
- Wilson netted all 12 of her points in the third "quarter" of the game to lead the Big Red, while Katie Harpin and Maggie O'Neil had 8 and 7, respectively. Also scoring for Taft were Lexi Dwyer (3 points), and Sarah Perda and Lindsay Karcher with a basket each.
- But Taft -- already playing without its own all-star, Kate Karraker, who has missed the last three games due to illness -- lost Harpin for the rest of the season when she collided with another player and went down hard with a concussion. So the Rhinos' head into the last four games of the season, starting with Choate in Wallingford on Saturday, a little short-handed but with an above-.500 record still a possibility.

50-41 W
- For the second time in three days, the Big Red jumped out to a big, early lead on its home floor. This time, however, Taft was unable to cruise home for the victory. The visitors from Lakeville, down 35-19 at the half and 46-23 with about eight minutes to play, continued to scrap and hustle -- and ultimately cut the Rhinos lead to seven with just under three minutes to go. So while the final margin of victory was solid, Hotchkiss' young players definitely served notice that when Taft travels there in two weeks for the re-match, it had better be prepared to play hard and smart for thirty-two minutes.
- Setting the pace for the Big Red for the second straight game were its two freshmen, Katie Harpin and Maggie O'Neil. Both scored in double digits in the first half en route to 15 and 16 points, respectively. O'Neil also had eight steals. Lexi Dwyer was next in the scoring column with 7, Ashley Petrarca had 5, Erin McPhee a 3 ball, and Grace Kalnins and Sarah Perda a bucket each.

- Perhaps due to the eight day layoff for both teams, the game started off sloppily on the offensive end; after more than five minutes of play, it was a 2-1 game. Then, after Taft and the visitors traded baskets, the Big Red went on a 10-0 run to take an 18-10 lead -- one it would never relinquish.
- The Rhinos' two freshmen, Maggie O'Neil and Katie Harpin, led the way for Taft. O'Neil netted 14 points and gathered nine rebounds, while Harpin went for 10 and seven. Sophomore Alex Pite played her best game as a Rhino, tossing in three jumpers for her 6 points -- and she, Lexi Dwyer and Grace Kalnins defended well the Martlets' most dangerous player. Lindsay Karcher banged her way to five rebounds, three steals and a field goal, Ashley Petrarca contributed 4 points and three assists, and Sarah Perda nailed a 3 pointer in the second half. - Looking to win its fourth in a row, Taft took the floor with hopes of upsetting the visiting Lions. And for a while, the Big Red more than held its own, playing Kent even through the first eight minutes. Then Taft started missing shots and playing passively -- and against a talented team such as Kent, that's dangerous. Sure enough, Kent went on a 13-0 run to close out the first half. The Rhinos came out strong in the second half and cut into the lead, at one point getting it down to six, but could never generate enough offense to make things really interesting, so Kent won handily in the end.
- Kate Karraker provided much of Taft's offense on the day, pouring in 19 points. Lexi Dwyer (5 points) snuck inside often enough to lead Taft in rebounds with seven, while Katie Harpin contributed five rebounds, four assists, three steals and a free throw. 51-34 W
- The Big Red picked up its third consecutive victory Monday against Kingswood-Oxford in a game re-scheduled (due to inclement weather) from early December. Taft came out strong and jumped out to a large lead early on -- but then allowed K-O too many good looks at the basket and the result was just an eight point lead at the half (27-19). In the second stanza, the Rhinos came out flat and the Wyverns cut the lead to three. But Taft clamped down defensively, generated some turnovers that led to easy buckets, and went on a 16-0 run to put the game away.
- Kate Karraker led the way for Taft at the offensive end with 16 points, followed by Ashley Petrarca with 13 and Katie Harpin (who also collected six rebounds) with 10. Maggie O'Neil scored 5 points and gathered seven rebounds, while Grace Kalnins (3 points) had seven steals.

A vs Sacred Heart School
38-28 W
- The Big Red travelled south to square off against Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich and came away with its second straight double-digit win despite some very poor shooting in the second half. The Rhinos played well in the first half and carried a 28-17 lead into the locker room. But when Sacred Heart turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, Taft did not respond well, managing just four field goals over the last sixteen minutes. Still, Taft's defense limited the home team's good looks at the hoop, so the Big Red survived its second half scoring struggles.
- Leading the way for Taft was Maggie O'Neil with 12 points and ten rebounds. Kate Karraker and Katie Harpin each scored 9 points (Harpin also had seven boards), and Sarah Perda (3 pts), Grace Kalnins (a big 3-pointer in the second half) and Ashley Petrarca (2) rounded out Taft's scoring.
- The Rhinos play their third game in four days this Monday against Kingswood-0xford in a game re-scheduled from early December.

- The Big Red notched a much-needed win against the visitors from Wallingford. In a change from recent games, the Rhinos were hot early on and jumped out to a double digit lead. But Choate started to click and never allowed the game to get out of hand; it was 27-18 at the half, and the largest the lead ever got was sixteen before it ended at ten.
- Playing exceptional all-around basketball for Taft were Maggie O'Neil and Ashley Petrarca. O'Neil finished with 17 points, six rebounds and six steals, while Petrarca had 12 points to go with her six boards.

A vs Loomis Chaffee School
26-60 L
The rematch of a game played just four days ago went from competitive to laugher in short order when Taft stopped executing midway through the second half. Down eleven at the break (24-13), the Big Red cut the lead to nine (33-24) with about ten minutes to go -- when the floodgates opened. All the Rhinos could muster from that point till the end of the game was a pair of free throws. Taft turnover followed Taft turnover, and Loomis took full advantage, scoring on a string of fast break layups and offensive rebounds and putbacks. Nothing worked for the Rhinos, everything worked for the Pelicans.
With games this Friday, Saturday and Monday, the Big Red needs to re-group quickly.

H vs Loomis Chaffee School
38-47 L
- Loomis' superior size and strength plus Taft's ice cold first half shooting (5 for 28) meant that this game was all but decided by the intermission, which saw the Big Red trailing by ten. The Pelicans' lead grew to sixteen early in the second half; but the home team dug in on defense, hit a few shots, and cut the bulge to seven at one point, making interesting a game that looked like it might be a blowout. In the end, though, the deficit was too much for the Rhinos to overcome, and Loomis cruised to victory.
- Sparking Taft in the second half was co-captain Sarah Perda (12 points), who hit three of her four 3-pointers after the break. Kate Karraker led Taft in scoring with 16 points, and Maggie O'Neil followed with 6. O'Neil, Lindsay Karcher, and Katie Harpin's (2 points) rugged play inside were instrumental in keeping the game close, as were Lexi Dwyer, Grace Kalnins, and Alex Pite's perimeter defense.
- Taft's chance to even the season series with the Pelicans comes immediately as it visits Loomis this Wednesday at 2:30.

A vs Kent School
32-47 L
- For the second consecutive game, the Rhinos shot terribly on the road. Last Saturday at Berkshire, Taft managed to pull out the win despite that cold shooting; against Kent, poor marksmanship cost the Big Red a chance to stay close against a strong opponent. After starting slowly and trailing by fourteen several minutes into the game, Taft re-grouped and pulled to within ten by halftime. Two Rhino buckets in the first minute of the second half made it a 27-21 game, and it appeared the game would be closely contested. Then the lid went on the bucket for Taft -- and stayed on. The Big Red would score just eleven points the rest of the half, and three of those came on a 3 pointer by Sarah Perda in the last minute when the outcome had long since been decided. The offensive execution and shots were there...they just wouldn't fall for Taft. So despite determined defense by the visitors, Kent slowly pulled away for the win. Kate Karraker (8 points) and Maggie O'Neil (7) led Taft in scoring, while Lexi Dwyer (5) and Ashley Petrarca (4) each scored two hoops.
The team looks forward to playing at home again this Saturday evening against Loomis.

A vs Berkshire School
43-38 W
For the past decade the rims in Sheffield, MA have rarely been kind to the Big Red -- and Saturday night's game typified that trend. The visitors shot 12 for 49 from the floor (24%) against Berkshire's zone defense, and that included ten air balls. But Taft's defense was solid, holding the home team to ten field goals. The result was an ugly Taft win that wasn't truly secure until Kate Karraker (14 points) hit two free throws with ten seconds to play. Aside from Karraker's scoring, the offensive bright spots for Taft were few but noteworthy: Alex Pite picked up her first points (3) as a Rhino and freshman Katie Harpin scored her most points yet in a Taft uniform. Those two also played outstanding defense, as did Maggie O'Neil (4 points), Ashley Petrarca (2 points) and Grace Kalnins (2 points).

H vs Deerfield Academy
50-49 W
The Big Red picked up its second win of the season in breathless fashion in a game that was undecided until the final seconds. Deerfield, despite the long bus ride, came out aggressively and shooting well while Taft's offense was uneven and its defense a little flat. Despite an at-the-buzzer 3 pointer by
Claire Wilson, Taft still trailed at the half by three.
The second stanza began with Taft unable to generate much at the offensive end. But Deerfield had also cooled off so the Rhinos stayed within striking distance. Finally, in the middle of the second half, with the visitors up 38-33, Taft went on a 14-0 run fueled by the fine defensive play of
Grace Kalnins, Sarah Perda and
Katie Harpin and some big hoops by
Ashley Petrarca. But Deerfield would not go away; they took advantage of some miscues and poor shooting by Taft, continued to execute, cut the lead to one, and had a chance to win it as the clock ticked down. Only a timely steal by
Lexi Dwyer -- who just a minute earlier had scored on an offensive put back while fouled -- preserved the win.
Kate Karraker rode four 3-pointers to 18 points to lead Taft offensively, while
Wilson finished with 14.
Petrarca had those 6 second half points,
Dwyer and
Perda each had 3, and
Maggie O'Neil, Kalnins and
Harpin put in a bucket a piece.

A vs Suffield Academy
48-51 L
- In a re-match of a game that represents Taft's sole win of the season thus far (in the second round of the Loomis Tournament), the Tigers of Suffield, playing at home this time, outlasted the Big Red. Taft shot well early on and jumped out to a 10-2 lead but cooled down quickly and could muster just a few buckets over the last ten minutes of the first half, which ended with Suffield up 21-17. The Rhinos tied it up midway through the second frame and played hard throughout. In the end, though, the Tigers height, strength, and shot-making combined with more icy outside shooting by Taft meant that the Big Red's last minute rally would fall short.
- Claire Wilson, who had three down-the-stretch hoops including an old-fashioned three point play off a steal, drive and "and one" bucket, led Taft offensively with 15 points. Kate Karraker had 14 (including 4-for-4 from the free throw line) and Maggie O'Neil followed with 8, all in the second half. Rounding out Taft's scoring were Lexi Dwyer (5), Katie Harpin (3) and Sarah Perda (3) -- all of whom also played hustling, hard-nosed defense. And despite not scoring, Lindsay Karcher, Grace Kalnins and Ashley Petrarca contributed nicely off the bench.
- The Rhinos look to pick up their first win of the new year against Deerfield at home this Wednesday.

A vs Pomfret School
26-56 L
- The Big Red made the long drive to Pomfret Wednesday afternoon....and found out in short order why Pomfret is undefeated. Taft's defense early on was formidable, but the home team still jumped out to a 10-2 lead by the middle of the half -- and the Rhinos never got close as they could not establish any offensive rhythm or make shots the few times they did. A 25-12 Pomfret lead at the half bulged to twenty plus points a few minutes into the second frame as Taft's shooting woes continued while Pomfret heated up and also outhustled the Rhinos until the final buzzer.
- Taft's next chance to play well comes this Saturday on the road against Suffield. Doubtless the Tigers will be looking to avenge their loss to Taft in the Loomis Tournament, so it will be yet another challenging game for the Big Red.

A vs Worcester Academy
28-50 L
- On Friday, Taft squared off against Worcester in the third game of the Loomis Tournament -- and quickly discovered why Worcester is one of the elite Class A teams in New England this year. Coached by Taft alum Katie McCabe, the Worcester players are skilled and experienced, and Coach McCabe has them playing hard and cohesively. The result was a 32-10 halftime lead for Worcester. The second half was a different story as Taft picked up its defensive intensity, executed its offense more crisply, and played Worcester even. But the Rhinos never got closer than fourteen points down, and had no answer for Worcester's center, who scored 32 of their points.
- Particularly impressive at the defensive end for Taft were Grace Kalnins (5 points), Ashley Petrarca (2 points), Katie Harpin and Alex Pite, while Lindsay Karcher pulled in five tough defensive rebounds. Maggie O'Neil (9 points) and Claire Wilson (6 points, five assists) led the Big Red offensively.
- Four games into the season, the Taft players are starting to understand how they need to play if they want to have a chance to win against strong opponents. And opponents don't come any stronger than Taft's first one after the winter break: 7-0 Pomfret, winners of the Loomis Tournament.

A vs Suffield Academy
64-58 W
- On Thursday, in its second game of Loomis Tournament, the Big Red picked up its first win of the 2009-10 campaign against the Tigers of Suffield. Down 27-21 at the half, Taft came out on fire after the intermission, took the lead midway through the second stanza, and held on with just enough free throw shooting accuracy and defensive stops down the stretch.
- The game was unusual in that literally every player in red contributed in some significant way to a victory against a quality opponent. Kate Karraker (five assists) paced Taft with 16 gradually accrued points: eight in the first half and eight in the second. In contrast, the team's other high scorers scored all their points in the second half; Claire Wilson (four assists) tossed in three 3 balls en route to 15 points, and Maggie O'Neil -- who had picked up two early fouls and had to sit out much of the first half -- powered her way to 11 points to go with her five boards. And starters Lexi Dwyer (five assists) and co-captain Sarah Perda (three points) each sunk a 3 pointer before the intermission. But again, Taft's bench play was outstanding. Lindsay Karcher gave the Rhinos hard-nosed interior defense, two rebounds and a field goal in about ten minutes of play without a rest in the first half. Grace Kalnins had a couple of boards and an assist to go with her 5 points, Erin McPhee hit her first basket of the year (a 3), and Ashley Petrarca (4 points, three boards) hit two pressure jumpers in the second frame. And while Caroline Castellano, Alex Pite and Katie Harpin did not score, they scrambled and scrapped and helped the team to victory.
- In the final round of the tournament, Taft faces always-powerful Worcester Academy.

A vs Tabor Academy
45-57 L
- On Wednesday, in a game that was a bit closer than the final score indicates, Taft fell to Tabor by twelve in the opening round of the Loomis Tournament. With 2:45 to play in the game, the Big Red was still within striking distance, trailing by just six; but Tabor's superior size was decisive in the end -- that, plus the fact that the Seawolves hit their free throws down the stretch. There were many individual and team-wide bright spots in the loss for Taft. As a unit, and to a player, the girls played intense defense, forcing Tabor into several turnovers and rarely allowing an open shot. Offensively, Taft showed much more poise than it had in its opener. And that poise -- and the proper execution that follwed -- translated into made shots, with Kate Karraker (15 points, three assists), Claire Wilson (11 points, one assist) and Maggie O'Neil (11 points, nine rebounds, two assists) leading the charge. Lexi Dwyer (4 points, six boards, two assists) also hit two jumpers, and Ashley Petrarca and Katie Harpin (four rebounds) each scored a bucket.

H vs Nobles and Greenough School
33-36 L
Opening the season at home, the Rhinos played hard-nosed defense and looked to push the ball on offense. In the end, though, Taft missed an opportunity to pick up a win against perennial power Noble and Greenough school. Traveling for hours through difficult weather conditions and missing an important player, Nobles had trouble finding the bucket in the first half. But Taft had similar problems scoring, and went into the locker room up just 12-10. There was plenty more scoring and excitement -- and very physical play by both teams -- in the second half, and the lead changed hands several times. The difference down the stretch was that Nobles played with a bit more poise while Taft made too many mental errors.
Still, there were many bright spots for Taft beyond the team defense. Kate Karraker was the game's sole double-digit scorer, netting 12 points. Just behind her in the scoring column was newcomer Maggie O'Neil who had 9 and also led the team in rebounding with thirteen. Claire Wilson had 7 points -- 6 coming on two big 3 pointers late in the game -- and four assists while Lexi Dwyer chipped in with eight boards and 2 points. Frosh Katie Harpin rounded out Taft's scoring with 3 off the bench, and co-captain Sarah Perda had five rebounds.

H vs Hotchkiss School
55-45 W
The Big Red went with a three forward starting lineup for the first time this season in order to accommodate all its seniors on Senior Day. Nonetheless, Taft's shots were falling and Hotchkiss was cold early on, and the home team jumped out to a 20-4 lead. The rest of the first half was played fairly even, and Taft enjoyed a fourteen point margin (34-20) as the teams went into the locker rooms. But despite getting many wide open looks in the second half, the Rhinos struggled from the floor, and ultimately managed just four field goals over those last sixteen minutes. Meanwhile, Hotchkiss worked hard, made several contested shots -- and caused the home team considerable discomfort, cutting the lead to five at one point. Only accurate free throw shooting by Ches Fowler, Hannah Vazquez and Kate Karraker -- who were a combined 13 for 16 from the charity stripe in the second half -- allowed Taft to hold on for the victory.
Appropriately, a senior, Annie Fierberg, led Taft in scoring with 14 points. Karraker had 11, Vazquez 10, Fowler 7, Claire Wilson added 6, Brittney Kennedy (playing through injury) 4 and Sarah Perda 3.
The team's 9-12 final record does not reflect its progress this season. As a group, Western New England teams were the strongest they've been in years. And with half of Taft's players new to the team, the girls were forced to learn each other's tendencies in games with little margin for error. Given all the new players, it was no surprise that the team played its best basketball over the last several games, even if the scores didn't seem to reflect that; its last three losses (to Williston, Choate and Berkshire) might easily have been wins. Our younger players' defensive understanding and effort deepened and intensified as the season went along -- mostly due to the leadership of seniors Brittney Kennedy (a post-graduate), Hannah Vazquez (a two-year varsity player), Annie Fierberg (three years on the varsity), Liesl Morris (also three years) and especially captain Ches Fowler (a four-year varsity player). Ches set a hard-working example every day in practice even while she wisely allowed plenty of room for joking around when appropriate. The season would not have been the success it was without Ches' determination and commitment, along with that of the other seniors.
Thank you to all the players' parents for their willingness to travel long distances regularly to support the team; their attendance was motivating for the players on, say, a Wednesday afternoon in East Hampton, Mass. The seniors' parents -- Cooper and Wendy Morris, Bob and Leslie Fierberg, Hugh Kennedy and Laurie Kennedy, Bob and Margi Vazquez, and Bob and Kathanne Fowler -- were an unusually dedicated group.
And a special thanks to the Fowlers, who devoted so much time and were so generous to the program and its players over four years.

36-40 L
The Big Red travelled to Sheffield to play Berkshire for the second time this year, and knowing that the rematch would be tough because this time Berkshire would be at full strength (two of Berkshire's better players were out during Taft's win over them a few weeks ago). Sure enough, Berkshire came out strong, Taft struggled offensively, and the visitors were behind 23-16 at the half. After the intermission Berkshire extended its lead to as many as ten before Taft started to scratch its way back through more stingy defense -- finally getting over the hump on two Kate Karraker free throws with under a minute to play. Then, with Taft up 36-35 and 18.5 seconds to play, the game took a series of bizarre turns, and the result was a two point Berkshire lead with 9.9 seconds to go, Taft being forced to foul, and Berkshire coming away with the win.
Karraker led Taft with 16 points. Britt Kennedy scored 9, Ches Fowler had 5, Annie Fierberg 4, and Claire Wilson chipped in with 2.

The Big Red picked up a solid win against a quality opponent on the road, bouncing back from dispiriting, consecutive losses to Williston and Choate. Claire Wilson (9 points), Lexi Dwyer (6 points) and Annie Fierberg (4 points) warmed up early and helped Taft jump out to a lead, but Porter's hustled and made difficult shots -- and it was 28-25 Taft at the half. After the break, the Rhinos held the opposition field goal-less for the first several minutes and slowly pulled away, mostly riding Kate Karraker's (15 points) hot hand and Brittney Kennedy's (11 points) steady inside play.

H vs Choate Rosemary Hall
46-53 (OT) L
In a thrilling Parents' Day game at Taft, Choate came away with the victory in overtime, avenging a loss to the Rhinos a few weeks ago in Wallingford. Taft was ahead 39-31 with just over nine minutes to play when it started getting sloppy with the ball. That allowed Choate to climb back into it, and regulation ended with the teams knotted at 43. But Choate clearly had the momentum and confidence, and that carried into overtime, as a Choate player nailed a 3, Taft continued to muster little at the offensive end, and Choate hit just enough free throws to put the game away. It was a hard-fought and exciting contest -- but for the second game in a row, the Big Red just couldn't finish against a quality opponent.
Kate Karraker shone brightest on offense for Taft, netting 18 points, and Lexi Dwyer played well at both ends, finishing with 6 on a pair of 3-pointers.

A vs Williston Northampton School
35-38 L
Taft dropped a heartbreaker to Williston on their Senior Day in East Hampton, MA. The visiting hoops weren't kind to the Rhinos, but despite being down 23-15 at the half, the Big Red felt that if it could keep up the defensive intensity, the lid would eventually come off the hoop, and that's precisely what happened in the second half. Williston extended its lead to 32-21 at about the 7:00 minute mark, but from then on it was all Taft -- almost. The Rhinos got stop after stop at the defensive end, managed to hit a few jumpers, and finally pulled ahead 35-34 on two Ches Fowler free throws with under two minutes to play. After a few possession changes, Williston re-took the lead on a layup. Taft still had two chances to go ahead in the last minute, but neither the front end of a one-and-one at the line nor an open jumper would fall, Taft was forced to foul, and Williston iced the game with two free throws of its own at the line with a second to play.
Fowler scored all of her 8 points in the second half, Annie Fierberg led Taft with 10 points and also played great defense on Williston's difficult-to-guard forward, Brittney Kennedy was big inside with 5 points, Kate Karraker had 7, and Liesl Morris again all but shut down the opposition's best guard.

A vs Hotchkiss School
45-33 W
Taft came out of the gates ice cold at the offensive end, and not focused enough on the defensive glass -- and the result was a ten point Hotchkiss lead after about eight minutes of play. Slowly, the lid started to come off the hoop for the Rhinos, but the Bearcats still enjoyed a 21-14 lead at the half. During the intermission, Taft committed itself to stronger defensive play and rebounding, and soon enough the score was knotted at 21 each. The lead exchanged hands a few times in the middle of the second half before Taft, behind the inspired play of captain Ches Fowler, started to pull away. The twelve point margin of victory was Taft's largest of the game.
Fowler was outstanding at both ends of the floor, finishing with 14 points (10 in the second half) and thirteen rebounds before fouling out with a few minutes to play. Brittney Kennedy, pressed into nearly full-time service by Annie Fierberg's luckless foul woes, fought through illness to register 5 points (five-for-six from the free throw line) and nine rebounds. Guard Hannah Vazquez (2 points, seven boards) deserves special recognition for playing many emergency minutes at forward with intelligence and competence. And sophomore guards Kate Karraker (14 points, three assists, five steals) and Claire Wilson (10 points, two assists, two steals) played their finest all-around games in Taft red, embracing defensive play with previously unglimpsed determination.

Neither team could maintain any offensive rhythm in this game, so not surprisingly it was decided by defense and free throws down the stretch. And while the entire Taft team came up big defensively -- especially Liesl Morris, who tenaciously defended a tough Choate guard the entire second half -- it was Brittney Kennedy (9 points) and Annie Fierberg (5 points) who calmly knocked down clutch foul shots to put Taft ahead and then ice the game. The two were a combined 7 for 8 from the charity stripe in the final five minutes, which saw the Big Red score the game's last nine points. Earlier in the game, Kate Karraker (6 points) and Hannah Vazquez (5 points) buried two jumpers each, while Ches Fowler (3 points) and Claire Wilson (2 points) played solid all-around games.

Having lost to Loomis by over twenty points just nine days before, Taft was determined to give the Pelicans a better game this time around, stay close, and maybe come away with a win. And on the offensive end, the Big Red was up to the task. Unfortunately, Loomis more than kept pace, and after a buzzer-beating half court shot, went into halftime with a ten point lead. Several times in the second half Taft was able to get the Loomis lead into single digits. But Loomis always countered with a timely bucket or two to extend the margin back to ten -- and the final spread of seventeen was the result of a few unanswered Loomis baskets down the stretch.
High scoring honors for Taft were shared by Ches Fowler and Kate Karraker, who poured in 12 points a piece, while Hannah Vazquez knocked down three 3 pointers for her 9 points.

27-69 L
In the second of three meetings this season between these teams, the visitors from Kent won big again. It was reasonably close early on, with Kent up 14-9 after about a quarter of play. But then the floodgates opened on the home team, as Taft had trouble handling Kent's defensive pressure. Kent went on a 26-4 run to end the first half, and the only question after that was, What would the final margin of victory be? A lot, it turned out, as Taft had trouble making even open shots in the second half after Kent eased up defensively, and Kent continued to push the ball up the floor on offense, looking for quick buckets. Taft can take some solace in the fact that no team has really been able to challenge Kent this season. But there is still much work to do before the first game of a home-and-home series versus Loomis, at Loomis, this Saturday.

In the first of two games between these teams, Taft pulled out its first home win. Berkshire was shorthanded, missing two of its best players, but they battled till the end, shaving a thirteeen point lead for the home team down to just three points with under a minute to play. But 2-for-2 free throw shooting by both Kate Karraker and Claire Wilson sealed the victory.
The last seven minutes of the contest was a shootout, with the teams combining to hit seven 3 pointers. Taft's trio of sophomore guards, Karraker, Wilson and Erin McPhee, came up big during that stretch. McPhee (4 points) calmly stuck two long-range buckets, Wilson (8 points) hit two 3s and drew an offensive charge at the two minute mark, and Karraker scored nine of her 12 points toward game's end. Katie Carden (4 points) tossed in a pair of mid-range jumpers, and Annie Fierberg played a stellar all-around game, finishing with 10 points and about as many rebounds. Early on in the contest, it was the Hannah Vazquez show, as she rainbowed in three 3 pointers in the game's first five minutes. At the other end, Liesl Morris (2 points) played tough and effective defense against Berkshire most dangerous player.

And as in the first game, Suffield led at the half -- this time by 10 -- but the Big Red scratched its way back. However, Suffield managed to hold Taft at bay in this contest. Taft drew within three points of Suffield twice in the second half, but both times a Suffield player hit a long jumper to keep the game just out of reach.
Kate Karraker and Brittney Kennedy were the two Taft players in double digits, with 12 and 10, respectively. But the team will have to find a way to generate a bit more offense at Deerfield on Wednesday.

H vs Pomfret School
32-49 L
The visitors from Pomfret showed determination simply in making the trip to Watertown on a rotten winter day -- and showed even more of it once the game began. It was a close contest until the last several minutes of the first half. Then, with the score 14-11 Taft, a combination of porous Big Red defense, hot Pomfret shooting and cold Taft shooting combined to fuel a 19-0 Pomfret run at the end of the first half and the start of the second. Taft did partially recover, but the hole was just too deep against the well-coached visitors, and the lead was never fewer than nine points after that big run.
Annie Fierberg pulled down nine rebounds in the contest, while Kate Karraker led Taft in the scoring column with 14 points. But the team effort and execution just was not there today, and Taft knows it must play better if it is to win the re-match against Suffield this Saturday at home.

Taft 15 Kent 50
(Team Record: 2-2)
The Big Red faced the defending Class A New England champions in the second round of the Loomis Holiday Tournament -- and immediately discovered that this year's Kent team is at least as potent as last year's. Kent stifling defensive pressure led to several Taft turnovers, and Kent went up big early. Continuing to press full court even after it was up by more than twenty points in the first half, Kent ultimately took a 35-2 lead into the halftime locker room. In the second frame, Taft's players did a few good things at both ends, but mostly looked as if it just wanted the game to end. Hannah Vazquez and Sarah Perda were the sole bright spots for Taft offensively, sinking three 3 pointers between them. Overall, Taft's players and coaches hope they can apply lessons learned during this contest to the two regular season games they have against Kent later this winter.
But the memory of the great win the day before against Suffield lingered, and Taft headed into the break knowing that this season holds great promise when play resumes in January.

A vs Suffield Academy
44-36 W
Taft 44 Suffield 36
(Team Record: 2-1)
The girls varsity basketball team battled back from an eight point halftime deficit to pull out a dramatic win in an opening round game of the Loomis Holiday Tournament. This was one of Taft's biggest wins in recent years for a few reasons: it came against a talented team, the comeback was fueled by a dedication to team defense, and it was led by seniors.
Suffield scored its last field goal of the game at the 8:30 mark of the game -- partly due to their missing a few shots from in-close, but mostly due to Taft's picking up the defensive intensity. Every Suffield shot was challenged, and few second chances were permitted by the Big Red as Taft helped out and rotated and scrambled for every loose ball. At the offensive end, senior guard Hannah Vazquez was clutch, scoring her 8 points in those final eight minutes. Others took their cue from Hannah, especially senior Annie Fierberg, who scored her 5 points (she added six rebounds for the game) in that same stretch. Also on the floor at times and contributing in a variety of ways as Taft caught and then went ahead of the Tigers were seniors Brittney Kennedy (5 points, five rebounds and three assists on the day), Ches Fowler (6 points, five boards, two helpers) and Liesl Morris (4 points on two big second half jumpers, and an outstanding defensive effort against a skilled guard from Suffield). Sophomore guard Kate Karraker (12 points) calmly orchestrated the offense down the stretch. Freshman Lexi Dwyer rounded out the scoring, with 4 points in the first half.
Although the game against Kent in the second round of the Loomis Tournament did not go well, this is a win on which the team can build after the break.

Taft 52 Kingswood-Oxford 27
(Team Record: 1-1)
The girls varsity basketball team rebounded from Saturday's loss to Nobles to notch its first win of the season, in West Hartford against Kingswood-Oxford. Taft maintained its defensive intensity throughout the game, but -- in contrast to Saturday's game -- managed to settle down, move the ball and make shots at the offensive end. One possession was particularly impressive: all five players touched the ball as seven passes were made in rapid succession without a dribble, culminating in a Lexi Dwyer 3 pointer. It was a beautiful display of selfless, spacing-conscious play at the offensive end.
Leading the scoring column for Taft was Kate Karraker, who made four consecutive jumpers in the second half en route to a 14 point game. But seven other players scored for Taft: Brittney Kennedy with 9, Ches Fowler with 7, Annie Fierberg and Lexi Dwyer with 6 each, Hannah Vazquez with 5, Erin McPhee with 3 and Ashley Petrarca (the first points for those two in a Taft uniform). While Liesl Morris, Sarah Perda and Katie Carden did not score, they played very well at the defensive end -- especially Morris, who defended K-O's most dangerous player much of the game. Meanwhile, Ches Fowler and Brittney Kennedy controlled the glass, hauling in eleven and ten rebounds, respectively.
After exams, Taft looks to continue its winning ways when it takes on Suffield in the opening round of the Loomis Chaffee Holiday Tournament next Wednesday at 2:30.

A vs Nobles and Greenough School
20-41 L
Taft 20 Nobles 41
(Team Record: 0-1)
Travelling to Dedham, MA to face the always strong and well-coached team from Nobles, Taft was up to the challenge defensively. The Big Red held the Bulldogs to 20 points over the first 21 minutes of play, forcing turnovers and high-level-of-difficulty shots from the opposition. Unfortunately, Taft looked unsteady at the offensive end, committing far too many turnovers, passing up too many open shots and simply missing the vast majority of those it took. Still, the game was closer than the score indicates -- Nobles scored 10 points in the last three minutes when Taft, missing three players, appeared exhausted and discouraged -- and the Big Red now knows it can be in any game if it can settle down at the offensive end.
Senior captain Ches Fowler led the team in scoring (8) and rebounding (nine), while fellow senior Brittney Kennedy pulled in seven boards. Newcomer Kate Karraker performed well at point guard and also ripped down five caroms.
Next up for Taft is Founders League opponent Kingswood-Oxford on the road on Wednesday.

A vs Hotchkiss
56-49 W
Senior Day often brings out the best in a team. A few days ago Taft played its best offensive game of the season against Berkshire on its Senior Day; a few days before that Taft was the thirty point loss victim at Choate during its Senior Day. Yesterday, Taft was almost victimized again at Hotchkiss, as the Bearcats proved a far more potent opponent than they had two weeks prior in Watertown.
Hotchkiss held a seven point lead toward the end of the first half, when the Big Red went on a defensive pressure-fuelled offensive run that saw it take a six point lead into the locker room. But Hotchkiss fought on after the intermission, its guards throwing in 3 pointers and its big men scoring on put backs and spin moves in the paint. The result was a one point Hotchkiss lead with about five minutes to play -- after which, again, it was the Rhinos defense that led to easy opportunities at the offensive end, and the Big Red escaped with a seven point win in a very hard fought and physical game.
Three of Taft's players hit double digits: senior Chelsea Berry and post-graduate Nyasha Miller with 15 points each, and junior Ches Fowler with 11. While senior Christine Trusio (along with junior Hannah Vazquez) was at Harvard Model Congress, the two other seniors scored -- Brooke Hartley with 3 and Ann Samuelson with 2. Juniors Annie Fierberg (4 points, and a great defensive job on Hotchkiss' toughest player), Liesl Morris (2) and Niki Gilbane, as well as sophomores Katie Carden and Sarah Perda (2 points each) also contributed significantly to the team's win in this final game.
Winning six of its last seven games to reach .500 for the season, the girls on the team deserve a ton of credit for staying positive, continuing to work hard, and trying to improve at an individual and team level when the outlook was grim a few weeks ago. In all this they took their cue from captain Chelsea Berry. Chelsea played in pain (the victim of a knee to the thigh) the entire second half of the Hotchkiss game, never asking out and pressuring the opposition's guards as relentlessly as she had all year. But that was typical, as her play all season was selfless and inspirational. Chelsea leaves a four year legacy of playing hard -- but also playing with class and honor. The seven underclassmen would do well to style their approach to the game after Chelsea Berry's.

H vs Berkshire
58-31 W
As cold as Taft's collective shooting hand has been at times this season, that's how hot the team was today, right from the first trip down the floor. The Rhinos' defense was also sound against Berkshire's attack -- but it was the Big Red's offense that was more effective than it has been all year, tallying twenty-nine points in each half.
Fittingly on Senior Day, the team's top two scorers were seniors, and each of the five seniors got in the box score. Brooke Hartley (11 points) came out absolutely unconscious; her rainbow 3 pointer was Taft's first bucket, and she would do all her offensive damage in the first half, scoring seemingly at will. Chelsea Berry and Nyasha Miller again orchestrated Taft's attack, and netted 8 and 6 points, respectively. But the game's best moments (after Brooke completed her scoring flurry) were contributed by Christine Trusio and Ann Samuelson. Christine has missed much of the season with a concussion, so Ann has filled in for her as a "big man" off the bench. Today they were both healthy, and in the starting lineup. Christine had 4 points on two tough angle shots in the first half, and Ann had a foul shot and nifty lefty layup (from a feed by Chelsea) in the second. In short, the seniors played beautifully together on their day, and it was really touching to watch.
Meanwhile four of the underclassmen played especially well off the bench in limited time. Hannah Vazquez (7 points) and Sarah Perda (6) each drained two 3 pointers, while Annie Fierberg and Ches Fowler scored 6 points a piece, and each was perfect from the foul line.
The team's last game of the season is its rematch with Hotchkiss in Lakeville on Saturday.

H vs Miss Porter's
48-36 W
When Porter's dangerous guard opened the game on fire, hitting three straight 3 pointers, the visitors from Farmington jumped out to a ten point lead. After that, Taft gathered itself, clamped down on defense, and went on an extended run of its own. By halftime the Big Red was up two, and by the ten minute mark of the second half the Rhinos were up by close to twenty points. Porter's didn't stop working, though, and managed to cut into Taft's lead a bit before the final buzzer. In the end it was a solid win based on tough team defense and balanced scoring: Chelsea Berry, Annie Fierberg and Ches Fowler each had 12 points, and Nyasha Miller was just behind them with 10. Hannah Vazquez' long jumper rounded out the scoring.

A vs Choate
17-48 L
The Big Red travelled to Wallingford hoping to continue its modest three game win streak against the athletic girls from Choate on their senior day. When the Rhinos scored on two of their first three trips down the floor on an elbow jumper by Annie Fierberg and two free throws by Ches Fowler, and the game was knotted at 4, the outlook was promising. Then it all went south for Taft. A combination of tough defense and hot shooting on Choate's part, and porous defense and frosty cold shooting on Taft's part fuelled a 26-3 run by the Wild Boars the rest of the first half. The second half saw more of the same, as Taft simply couldn't establish any offensive rhythm, and even with many of its reserves playing, Choate continued to score, although not quite as prolifically.
The only bright side to the drubbing is that the girls have a chance to put it behind them immediately, as Miss Porter's comes to Watertown for a rare Monday afternoon game.

H vs Williston
33-29 W
The Big Red rebounded from a sluggish first half to record its third straight win against the always hard-playing visitors from Williston. The two teams combined for just seven field goals over the first sixteen minutes of play, which ended with Taft trailing by four. And while the home team found its offensive rhythm in the second half, it never could convert on enough easy looks to extend its small lead, and Williston went up by three with just a few minutes to play. Down the stretch, a big bucket by Nyasha Miller (who led the team with 10 points) and clutch free throws by Ches Fowler (8 points) and Liesl Morris (4 points) gave the girls their final margin of victory. But mostly, the credit goes to the whole team for continuing to play tough defense even while their potentially dispiriting offensive struggles went on and on. So it was a good team win.
On Saturday, Taft travels to Choate looking to avenge a loss endured a few weeks ago.

H vs Hotchkiss
55-36 W
Starting slowly on offense and trailing 13-9 with seven minutes left in the first half, the Big Red found its offensive rhythm and starting knocking down shots just as its defense began to force turnovers. The result was a 36-9 run the rest of the first half and the first eight minutes of the second, after which the home team cruised to victory despite Hotchkiss' continued intensity and exceptional play by its most dangerous player. Fuelling the Rhinos' scoring display were the same trio that led them three days ago versus Westminster: Hannah Vazquez, Nyasha Miller, and Chelsea Berry. Vazquez (16 points) was instant offense off the bench, nailing two 3 pointers en route to ten first half points; she also pulled in three rebounds and dished out two assists. Miller contributed steadily throughout, and filled up the stat sheet with 15 points, five boards, five steals and two assists. Berry was Miller's partner in crime defensively, also swiping five balls, and played probably her most impressive offensive game ever in four years on the varsity: 16 points and six assists. Berry and Miller, Taft's primary ball handlers, also had just two turnovers each -- another crucial element in the victory.

H vs Westminster
44-39 W
Building from its improved play of last Wednesday, the Rhinos put together a solid thirty-two minute effort and picked up a win against a quality opponent. Westminster has its most athletic and dangerous team in years, and played a stingy man-to-man defense that had Taft working hard for every bucket. But Taft was equally intense on D (sometimes a bit too intense, as reflected by Westminster's getting into the bonus early each half) and hit just enough timely shots to come away with the victory.
Three players scored 10 points for Taft: Chelsea Berry's included a 4-for-5 effort from the charity stripe, Nyasha Miller's came mostly on an assortment of high level of difficulty shots from close in, and four of Hannah Vazquez' five clutch field goals came from the outside. Ches Fowler battled hard inside for 9 points and eight rebounds, while frontcourt mate Annie Fierberg shook off an upset stomach in the first half to grab seven boards to go with her 3 points. Katie Carden joined Vazquez in contributing enormously off the bench, as she grabbed five rebounds and scored a field goal.

H vs Kent
53-41 L
Two weeks ago, the Rhinos visited Kent and looked scared and overwhelmed in losing by more than thirty. Today it was a different story for much of the game. Taft came to play, and was up for much of the first half before giving up the last six points of it to trail 26-22 going into the locker room. Then, the first several minutes of the second half were decisive: Taft came out flat, Kent hit a few shots -- and before long Kent's lead was into double digits, peaking at a sixteen point bulge. The girls recovered their intensity and got it going at the offensive end, but against a strong team such as Kent, a full blown comeback wasn't to be as a nine point deficit was as close as Taft could come. Still, the team showed itself once again that when it plays hard at both ends and executes its offense, it can play with anyone.
Taft's offensive standouts were Nyasha Miller and Ches Fowler, who went for 12 and 11 points, respectively. Chelsea Berry took care of the ball handling duties and scored 8 points while holding Kent's point guard to 3, and Annie Fierberg scored 4 and Liesl Morris, Ann Samuelson and Hannah Vazquez each chipped in with 2 points.

In the first-ever meeting between these two teams, the visiting Rhinos got back on the winning track behind the tenacious play of captain Chelsea Berry (11 points), who set the tone early at both ends. Also playing well for Taft at various points in the game were Brooke Hartley (pesty on D and 4 points), Niki Gilbane (a season high 7 points), Annie Fierberg and Ches Fowler (8 and 3 points, respectively, and plenty of rebounds each), Hannah Vazquez (5 points), and backup big men Katie Carden and Ann Samuelson (2 points a piece).

H vs Choate
48-33 L
The home team played the first several minutes of this game as they had the recent game against Loomis: hard and smart. As a result, the girls jumped out to an early lead and looked in control. Then Choate started hitting some shots and beating Taft to loose balls, and the Rhinos did not respond. Soon Choate had a seven point lead, which Taft cut to five with a jumper just before the halftime buzzer. So while at that point it was a game that still could have gone either way, when Choate came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders, Taft couldn't offset the Wild Boars' quickness, agression and skill with hustle and intelligence. Choate slowly pulled away, with their margin of victory being the largest of the game.
The only silver lining to the loss is that the girls have a chance to play again immediately, with a 3:30 away game at Sacred Heart tomorrow.

A vs Loomis
45-43, OT L
In a rematch of a game played just four days prior, Taft put forth a far better effort than it had in the first game, and was in position to win in both regulation and overtime before Loomis simply made a few more heady, crunch-time plays than did the Rhinos. Still, there were a ton of positives for Taft: Liesl Morris started in place of ailing Brooke Hartley and defended well; Nyasha Miller got the team out of the gates impressively, scoring 8 of her team-high 10 points in the first half; Chelsea Berry played most of the game against Loomis' speedy and athletic point guard (Niki Gilbane spelled her for several minutes both halves) and held up well under enormous pressure (and scored 7 points); Katie Carden gave us great minutes off the bench and was 2-for-2 from the foul line; Sarah Perda (5 points) tossed in two key jumpers toward the end of the first half; Hannah Vazquez scored the only field goal either team managed in overtime on a long jump shot; Ann Samuelson, playing for the first time as a big man, showed no hesitation and scored her first bucket of the season; and big men Ches Fowler (8 points) and Annie Fierberg (3) battled for all they were worth inside all game long, each pulling down many rebounds in traffic. More broadly, when a lid was on the Rhinos bucket during the first eight minutes of the second half and the team got down by seven points, the girls kept their composure and stormed back to take the lead. If Chelsea Berry's shot with 3 seconds to go in regulation had gone in (she put it up with confidence, and it hit the back rim), the outcome of the game almost surely would have been different.
In short, it was a great game that, unfortunately, one team had to lose. Taft was that team today...but has a chance to test itself and play another very high quality opponent this Friday at home against Choate.

H vs Loomis
49-40 L
Playing a night game at home with a supportive crowd on hand, the Rhinos gave plenty of effort, but just couldn't keep pace with the fast and athletic visitors from Loomis. Fuelled by several steals, fast break opportunities and offensive rebounds, the Pelicans turned a 7-7 tie into a 27-16 halftime lead, and in the second half the home team just couldn't muster enough offensive efficiency to narrow the margin. The team knows that when it sees Loomis again in just a few days, it will have to take better care of the ball and at the offensive end and control its defensive boards with more authority.
Leading Taft offensively were Nyasha Miller and Chelsea Berry, who had 15 and 11 points, respectively. Nyasha added nine rebounds -- a few behind Ches Fowler, who battled hard for twelve of her own and also scored 8 points. Annie Fierberg was forced to the bench for much of the second half with foul trouble but still snared eight boards; her place on the floor was capably filled by Katie Carden, who grabbed seven caroms. Brooke Hartley and Hannah Vazquez each played well and tossed in a 3 pointer.

A vs Kent
55-23 L
The Rhinos knew going in that they would have to play their best at both ends in order to keep it close against the powerful squad from Kent. That didn't happen. A 12-6 game a few minutes in quickly got out of hand when Kent went on a 22-2 run to close out the half. To their credit, the visitors re-grouped, played with impressive intensity to start the second half, and went on an 10-0 run of their own. But the hole they had dug was far too deep, and Kent won going away.
The girls will see Kent again in two weeks, and know they'll have to play hard and smart from opening tap to final buzzer in order to be in it. But there is much basketball to played between now and then, starting with Loomis at home this Saturday evening.

A vs Berkshire
44-35 W
The Rhinos travelled north for a Saturday evening contest against an injury riddled and undersized squad from Berkshire...who played determined, up tempo basketball and gave the visitors all they could handle in a game that wasn't decided until the final minute. Nyasha Miller, who played well throughout, was especially important in the first half when she scored 13 of Taft's 25 points (she finished with 16). Carrying more of the load in the second half were Ches Fowler and Annie Fierberg. Ches netted both her field goals in the second half and finished with 9 points to go with her ten rebounds. Annie scored all 5 of her points after the intermission, snared seventeen caroms(!!), and threw in a couple of assists for good measure. Chelsea Berry had 5 points -- including a critical three-pointer late in the game -- and three assists while Brooke Hartley added a jumper. Outstanding bench minutes were provided by Liesl Morris, who had 4 second-half points and a couple rebounds. Hannah Vazquez (two blocks), Christine Trusio (3 points and two boards) and Katie Carden (three rebounds) also gave us quality minutes off the bench. Ann Samuelson, Niki Gilbane, and Sarah Perda, while not breaking into the scoring column, all played heady D -- which, in the end, was what carried the team to victory.
But the girls will need more offense to go with the defensive tenaciousness they have recently shown to stay in the game Wednesday against a very talented Kent team on the road.

H vs Deerfield
34-28 W
For the first time all season, the team put together 32 minutes of tough defensive basketball. That was the key to victory as offensively the Rhinos struggled and needed some points off turnovers to generate scoring in the second half. Six of Chelsea Berry's 9 points (all after the intermission) came on fast breaks following steals (she had five heists), while Ches Fowler (7 points) executed a nifty, length-of-the-court dribble and layup after a steal. Leading scorer Nyasha Miller had a fine all-around game with seven rebounds and two steals to go with her 13 points. Brooke Hartley (3 points and two steals) and Annie Fierberg (2 points and nine rebounds) rounded out the scoring. Particularly effective off the bench were "big men" Christine Trusio (four boards) and first year players Katie Carden, Niki Gilbance, and Hannah Vazquez (two steals).
So it wasn't necessarily a pretty game to watch, but it was a well-earned win, and gives the team some momentum heading into a Saturday night tilt at Berkshire.

A vs Suffield
35-41 L
Facing Suffield for the second straight time (the first was at the Loomis Holiday Tournament over three weeks ago), the Rhinos came out flat and allowed the Tigers to score the first 11 points of the game in under two minutes. But after a timeout, the team immediately rallied at both ends of the floor and played far and away its best basketball of the year. Down 25-21 at the intermission, the girls refused to quit even after an offensive dry spell at the start of the second half saw them again go down by double digits; with under two minutes to play, the Suffield lead was just four points. Down the stretch, a few just-missed shots proved the difference...but the team had every reason to feel that, despite the loss, it was starting to realize its potential for the first time all season.
Leading the way, appropriately enough, was senior captain Chelsea Berry, who rode three 3-pointers to an 11 point game and was all over the place on defense. Annie Fierberg was next in the scoring column with 8, and she also spent much of the afternoon doing her defensive best against Suffield's outstanding post player. Nyasha Miller drew the other difficult defensive assignment, matching up against Suffield's 6'0" point guard -- and held her to 4 points while scoring 6 of her own. Rounding out Taft's scoring were Sarah Perda (4 points on two long jumpers), Ches Fowler (her 2 points were the team's first of the game), and Brooke Hartley and Hannah Vazquez (2 points each on first half jumpers). Liesl Morris, Niki Gilbane, Katie Carden, and newly indoctrinated big man Christine Trusio didn't score, but were outstanding at the defensive end and made good decisions on offense.
Is the term "inspiring loss" oxymoronic? Maybe -- but that's what this was. The team looks to continue its fine play on Wednesday at home against Deerfield.

A vs Suffield
23-45 L
(Team Record: 1-3)
In the second and final round of the Loomis Tournament on Friday (Thursday's games were postponed till Friday due to the weather), Taft fell to a solid Suffield team. The game was close for the first eight minutes or so, and then Suffield went on a run that Taft couldn't answer and was down by 11 at the half. It was more of the same in the second half as Taft scored most of its points against Suffield's bench players toward the end of the game after Suffield's front line players hit shots and made plays while Taft could not or would not respond.
It was a dispiriting loss as the girls not only didn't shoot well, but also played unintelligently. If we're to compete against better teams starting in January, that will have to change.

(This game was played Wednesday, December 12.)
Despite the lopsided score there were many bright spots for us in this game. As a team, we battled Tabor every time down the floor, and allowed them relatively few easy baskets (they are much taller than we). At the other end, Nyasha Miller showed poise and some much-needed shooting accuracy in scoring 12 points, Ches Fowler went 5 for 6 from the charity stripe, and Sarah Perda scored her first Taft points by sticking a 3 pointer in the first half. So we felt fine about our overall effort, seeing improvement over each of our first two games.

H vs Nobles
11-50 L
Two years ago, Nobles made the long drive to Watertown and handed our team a twenty-nine point loss; nonetheless, that Taft team rebounded and went on to have a successful season. This year, the result was even more lopsided. Nobles' superior height, skill, and experience simply overwhelmed our squad from the opening tip. It didn't help that senior captain Chelsea Berry was out with an injury. But when a team can muster just one bucket in the first half -- a jumper by Brooke Hartley -- it doesn't much matter who's not playing, or how good the defense is (and ours was solid the first sixteen minutes): you just have to accept that, at this point, you're outmanned, and realize that you need to improve in all aspects of the game. The 2005-06 Taft team did that. Will this year's group be determined to do the same? We'll start to get some answers in practice on Monday, and then in our second game this Wednesday at home against Kingswood.

A vs New Hampton
30-57 L
We travelled to Weston, MA (a neutral site) Wednesday to take on annual powerhouse New Hampton in the quarter finals of the Class A New England Tournament. We had a plan and executed it well. But New Hampton executed theirs better -- and it included giving us few easy shots (due largely to their superior height and strength), and hitting a whole bunch of challenged three pointers. In short, our girls played hard but were simply overmatched. It's not often that you lose by twenty plus points and feel good about the game; this is one of those times.
Appropriately enough, captain Colleen Sweeney led us offensively before fouling out with about four minutes left. She had 14 points despite playing against a girl several inches taller. Colleen ends her four year career at Taft with almost 900 points, and would have had a legitimate shot at 1,000 had she not missed or been limited in several games due to injury last season and this.
Katie Bergeron tallied 13, Katherine Latham had a 3 -- and everyone who played (and everyone did) gave her all at the defensive end.
Thank you to the Fowlers for hosting the team after the game for some much-needed (and high-quality) grub. And thank you, too, to all our dedicated fans -- especially Bob and Jeanne Sweeney, Colleen's parents. For four years Bob jerryrigged his teaching schedule such that he could show up for home and away games far from his job in Brookfield at 2:30 on weekday afternoons. (He could tell me how he did it, but then he'd have to kill me.) And along the way he and Jeanne acted as de facto ambassadors for girls basketball at Taft and the school in general. For all they've done -- including "supplying" us with Colleen -- I am deeply grateful.
The season did not end without accolades, however, as the Taft Girls' Varsity Team was awarded with the Girls Varsity Basketball Haddock Award in Sportsmanship. This honor is awarded annually to a private school in Northwestern CT by the Litchfield Board of Officals.

H vs Hotchkiss
50-36 W
Senior Day started off a little slowly for the home team. But a defensive adjustment during a timeout fuelled a 24-4 run to close out the first half. The second half was mostly about protecting our lead and trying to free up senior Clare Maltman to score; we succeeded in the first effort, but fell short in the second as Clare just couldn't buy one. She did, however, collect four rebounds -- and (her trademark) played hard and aggressively at both ends every minute out there. And classmates Katie Bergeron and Colleen Sweeney picked up the scoring slack, going for 21 and 11 points.
Colleen, a four-year varsity player, three-year starter, and two-year captain, also picked up eight rebounds and two assists playing her last game in the Taft gym. She will lead us into a first round New England tournament game on Wednesday against an as yet undetermined opponent.
Whatever happens in the tournament, the team can reflect on an excellent 2006-07 campaign -- including seven straight wins to close out the season and the earning of the county's Sportsmanship Award (as voted on by the referees). More than anything else, it has been a fun season, and everyone's glad to have it extend at least a few more days.

A vs Berkshire
51-20 W
Discovering upon arriving at Berkshire that they were unfortunately without their 1,000 career point scorer Iesha Nixon (due to injury), the team nonetheless stayed focussed and played a strong defensive game. At the offensive end, all but two of our players scored, led by Katie Bergeron's 12 points, and 8 point tallies by both Colleen Sweeney and Chelsea Berry.
We wrap up the (regular) season at home against Hotchkiss on Saturday.

A vs Miss Porter's
46-26 W
The team picked up its fifth straight win yesterday in Farmington against the hard-working crew from Miss Porter's. We didn't shoot particularly well, but our defense was sound, holding the opposition to just six field goals for the game. Leading the way offensively was Colleen Sweeney with 12 points. Katie Bergeron and Katherine Latham were just behind her with 9 while Annie Fierberg came off the bench to contribute 6. More important, we lost nothing defensively when we went to the bench, as everyone is playing with intensity and intelligence at that end right now -- a trend we hope to continue in our rematch with Berkshire on Wednesday (on the road) and in our home season finale against Hotchkiss on Saturday.

H vs Choate
53-41 W
Wanting to play well on Parents' Day and needing to play well to stay in the hunt for a tournament berth, we came out strong and went up by double digits early. Choate played hard and hung around, though, while we went cold from the field -- and it was just a six point game at the half. The second frame followed a similar pattern, with our extending the lead enough to feel that victory was reasonably assured, but never quite enough to feel totally comfortable given how hard Choate continued to play and the fact that they have several players who can hit multiple 3s had we let up. The twelve point final margin was about the average size of our lead during the second half.
Katie Bergeron and Colleen Sweeney were our leading scorers, with 15 and 14 points, respectively, while Katherine Latham was close behind with 11. Katherine also pulled in nine boards. Chelsea Berry (5 points) and Brooke Hartley (4 points) played outstanding perimeter defense (as did Katie) against Choate's dangerous guards. Ches Fowler went four for four from the charity stripe, while Annie Fierberg, Clare Maltman, Liesl Morris, Christine Trusio and Ann Samuelson all played with defensive intensity when called upon.
We finish up the season with a three game week: at Miss Porter's tomorrow, at Berkshire Wednesday, and home against Hotchkiss on Saturday.

A vs Williston
59-50 W
It should come as no surprise that we came out as flat as we have all year given that this was a Thursday afternoon game a long drive away after a full slate of classes. Down 18-11 with a few minutes to go in the first half, we finally started to wake up, and closed it with an 11-0 run. But despite our increased defensive intensity and offensive efficiency after the break, Williston didn't go away, largely due to one of their players exploding for six second half 3 pointers. It was an impressive display of long range marksmanship, but Katherine Latham countered with sixteen of her 24 points also after the intermission, and we were able to maintain our lead and come away with the win.
Colleen Sweeney was our other double digit scorer with 12, while Katie Bergeron had 9 and Annie Fierberg chipped in with 5.
The rubber match of our three games with Choate this season is on Saturday. It should be a good one.

A vs Hotchkiss
48-21 W
The game's very first basket was cause for celebration: a 3 pointer from the top of the key by Katie Bergeron which put her over 1,000 points for her high school career (the first four years of which were spent at Old Town High School in Maine). The game was stopped briefly in order to celebrate Katie's achievement...and then, benefitting from the fact that one of Hotchkiss' better players was out due to injury, the Big Red built a fourteen point lead by halftime. By game's end, playing time had been distributed close to evenly, and eight of our eleven players scored, led by Katie's 11 points, and Colleen Sweeney and Katherine Latham's 10 a piece. Chelsea Berry, Liesl Morris and Ann Samuelson each had 4, with Liesl's coming on two mid-range jumpers and Ann's on a pair of strong put backs. Ches Fowler and Clare Maltman rounded out our scoring with 3 and 2, respectively.
The third of our four straight road game stretch is against Williston on Wednesday.

A vs Westminster
57-49 W
The Long Weekend rust took a full half to flake off at both ends. We were a step slow on defense and ice cold from the field, and went into halftime down by four. Finally at about the eight minute mark we started to find our 3 point stroke against the Martlets' packed in zone, and meanwhile had clamped down somewhat at the defensive end -- and started to pull away. But if we needed a wake-up call heading into these last few weeks, Westy definitely provided it, playing hard and scoring on a number of unlikely looking shots. In short, we feel fortunate to have escaped Simsbury with what in the end was at most a fairly comfortable win.
Katie Bergeron poured in twelve of her 17 points after the intermission, and Katherine Latham seven of her 9. Colleen Sweeney, who was double- and triple-teamed virtually the entire game, still hit double digits with 10 points. Chelsea Berry had a pair of 3s for 6 points (there was much dispute after the game as to whether she called "glass!" on her second), and Brooke Hartley (7 points) and Annie Fierberg (6 points) gave us energy and scoring off the bench.
On Saturday, we travel to Lakeville for the first of our two games against Hotchkiss.

A vs Kent
60-46 L
We travelled to Kent at full strength, confident that we could stay close and give ourselves a chance to win at the end. And it almost unfolded that way. Kent jumped out to a double digit lead that it held for much of the first half, which ended with them up by eleven. In the second half, we hung around and were down just seven with four minutes to go. But several of their players hit big shots from the field and the foul line to keep us just outside striking distance, and a few critical turnovers and missed open shots by our (mostly exhausted) players down the stretch meant that, once again, it wasn't to be against the very strong squad from Kent.
To the surprise of everyone except perhaps herself, an energized and aggressive Annie Fierberg led us in scoring and rebounding (14 and five); she took advantage of the fact that Kent was focused on other players and just made one good basketball play after another at both ends. Colleen Sweeney and Katie Bergeron each had 10 points and three rebounds, and Katie also rang up six assists. Katherine Latham scored all 8 of her points in the second half, which helped keep us close. And Chelsea Berry was once again a defensive whiz against one of Kent's most dangerous players.
Heading into the final third of the season -- we have seven games in our last seventeen days -- we still feel confident in our abilities and toughness despite some disappointing losses of late. But five of those games are on the road, so it won't be easy. A solid Westminster team awaits us in Simsbury next Wednesday.

H vs Hopkins
55-28 W
Still stinging from the previous day's defeat at Choate, the team came out determined, built an early lead against the tall but young squad from New Haven, and stayed focused the rest of the way. Colleen Sweeney (13 pts.), Katie Bergeron (10 pts.) and Katherine Latham (three assists and two steals) did most of their damage in the first half, while Chelsea Berry (three steals) scored five of her 7 points in the first few minutes of the second. By game's end everyone had played substantial minutes and done good things on the floor. Especially noteworthy were Annie Fierberg's 8 point, ten rebound performance and Clare Maltman's six rebounds from the guard position.
Our rematch against still-undefeated and high-powered Kent at their place on Wednesday promises to be a far greater challenge.

A vs Choate
46-51 (OT) L
Travelling to Choate for a rare Friday afternoon game, we were met by a raucous crowd in Wallingford. And they were not disappointed; the game was close and hard fought from start to finish. We weathered early foul trouble by Colleen Sweeney by relying on the outside shooting of Katherine Latham and Katie Bergeron, who had three and two 3 pointers, respectively, in the first half -- which ended with us up by one. The second half saw Colleen take over for us in the scoring column as she rang up fifteen of her 18 points after the break. Down the stretch players on both teams made big plays, including Katie's both ends of a 1-and-1 with 4 seconds to go to put us up by three. After the second shot went through, Choate inbounded and their fastest player raced downcourt with the ball and threw up a 25 footer just as the buzzer sounded...and hit it. The place went wild, and we couldn't re-group and muster much in the overtime -- just three points.
The two silver linings to the hearbreaking loss are that we have no chance to stew about it as we play Hopkins tomorrow, and also we see Choate again this year -- at our place in three weeks.

H vs Loomis
46-37 W
A scant four days after losing badly to the Pelicans, the Big Red had a chance for redemption...and seized it. This was a close game most of the way, but an 8-0 run starting with just under five minutes left -- which stretched our lead to twelve -- was decisive.
The primary difference between this game and the first against Loomis was that we turned the ball over less than half as often this time. Plus we had a healthy Colleen Sweeney for the first time in two weeks. And she was dominant, with a 16 point, thirteen rebound, two assist performance. Katherine Latham wasn't far behind, also notching a double-double with 10 and ten -- and two blocks for good measure. Katie Bergeron shrugged off an unlucky day from the field to find other ways to contribute, scoring 6 of her 8 points from the foul line, collecting six boards and dishing out three assists. Ches Fowler was perfect from the line (6 for 6), and rang up 8 points and seven boards, while Chelsea Berry's 4 points don't begin to tell the story of her contribution to the win, as she spent the day working hard to limit the effectiveness of Loomis' very quick point guard.
A strong Choate team -- one we were fortunate to defeat in the Loomis Tournament a month ago -- awaits us Friday in Wallingford in the first our two regular season contests.

A vs Loomis
23-48 L
Nine minutes into this game, we held a 9-8 lead, and it looked as if this would be another classic, defensively-oriented, Taft-Loomis battle. Instead, we fell apart. Defensively, we did not get back quickly, allowed too many open shots and relinquished to the Pelicans several second and third chances. Offensively, we simply didn't execute, and when we did get clear looks at the basket, rushed our shots. More often, though, we turned the ball over -- thirty-five times to be exact. That's not a misprint.
We do, however, have an immediate chance to redeem ourselves, as Loomis visits Taft on Wednesday. There's plenty of work to do before then.

H vs Kent
35-50 L
Playing our second consecutive game without our captain Colleen Sweeney and therefore giving away size and strength to a tall and talented Kent squad, we nonetheless battled our way to a first half lead and went into intermission up 20-13. The second half was another story. Kent came out with increased defensive intensity and went on an 8-0 run to take the lead while we started to tire both physically and mentally. We re-took the lead briefly, but ultimately they were just too much for us, and Kent slowly pulled away to a convincing victory.
Katherine Latham played the whole game and notched 16 points and four rebounds, while Katie Bergeron (who rested for no more than two minutes) fought and clawed her way to double digits (10 points) and six rebounds. Ches Fowler, who scored our first two buckets, finished with 6 points and four boards. Chelsea Berry rounded out our scoring with 3 points and also played outstanding defense against Kent's point guard. Brooke Hartley and Clare Maltman also made noteworthy contributions at the defensive end.
We try to right the ship Saturday at Loomis, another very tough opponent.

Taft 62 Berkshire 28
(Team Record: 6-2)
Ches Fowler and Annie Fierberg filled in admirably for injured Colleen Sweeney, and got some inside assistance from Katherine Latham. Ches had 11 points and six rebounds, Annie 10 and five, and Katherine 16 and thirteen. (Thank you to Ann Samuelson -- also injured -- for keeping those stats.) Also contributing significantly to the win was Katie Bergeron (10 points, seven rebounds, three steals), who provided the most dramatic moment of the evening by banking in a contested 30 footer as the first half horn sounded. (The ref joked that he wasn't going to count it because he didn't hear her call "Glass!") Chelsea Berry (6 points), Brooke Hartley (two assists), Clare Maltman (three boards, two steals), Liesl Morris (five rebounds, three assists), and Christine Trusio (7 points, two boards) all played well, too.
Undefeated and enormously talented Kent looms on Wednesday.

A vs Deerfield
42-25 W
Borrowing Deerfield's away uniforms graciously offered us by their coach (we had left ours at Taft -- oops), the Big Red in white with green trim came out aggressively and built a 26-10 lead by halftime. In the second half we cooled off a bit while Deerfield made some adjustments and scrapped until the buzzer. So it wasn't too pretty a win, but after a two hour bus ride, it was great that everyone got to play significant minutes.
Katie Bergeron led the way offensively with 21 points and six steals, while backcourt mate Chelsea Berry (2 points) played smothering defense on Deerfield's most dangerous guard. Colleen Sweeney did a bit of everything with 7 points, four assists, three steals, four rebounds, and two offensive fouls drawn, while Katherine Latham contributed 3 points and six boards. Our other scorers were Brooke Hartley (4 points), Ches Fowler (3), and Christine Trusio (2) but Annie Fierberg, Liesl Morris and Ann Samuelson played well off the bench, too.
Next up is our first of two contests against Berkshire -- Saturday night at 7:00 PM.

H vs Suffield
48-45 W
Taft 48 Suffield 45
(Team Record: 4-2)
It didn't look good for the home team in the middle of the second half. The strong squad from up north held a seven point lead with about seven minutes to play. But our girls battled hard, especially at the defensive end, and after two clutch free throws by Colleen Sweeney with two seconds left, the Big Red had avenged a loss to Suffield at the Loomis Holiday Tournament.
Everyone contributed to this win. Clare Maltman had a timely 3 pointer in the first half. Ches Fowler had 4 crucial points in the second half. Chelsea Berry returned from injury and picked up 5 points, three rebounds and three steals. Annie Fierberg was huge off the bench, with 5 points to go with her five offensive boards. And Katie Bergeron (9 points, four boards, four assists, four steals) and Katherine Latham (7, six, and two -- and zero turnovers) played outstanding all-around games. But the game ball goes to Colleen, who played through enormous pain in the second half (she rolled her ankle at the end of the first) against Suffield's rugged and talented inside player, and finished with 15 points. It was a gutsy win, and our captain led the way.
Next up, Deerfield on the road on Wednesday.

A vs Choate
46-37 W
Choate had knocked off Andover in the other losers' bracket game, so despite our playing Choate twice per season, we found ourselves facing them earlier than expected this year. It was a battle, as Taft-Choate games always are. We went up early, riding three 3 pointers (two by Katherine Latham, one by Katie Bergeron), but Choate stormed back and it was a two point game at the half. But in the second session, Colleen Sweeney played her best ball of the tournament, scoring 14 of her 18 points (she also had seven boards), including a huge 3 pointer to put us up by five with just over two minutes to play. Earlier in the half, Brooke Hartley (who scored 7 points in this contest and filled in very capably all tournament for the injured Chelsea Berry, who's expected back in January) hit two, key long-range jumpers, one of them a 3, to keep us afloat when Choate started focusing on our other perimeter players. Down the stretch, it came down to us hitting our free throws (which we mostly did) to seal the victory.
So we stand at 3-2 and 1-0 in the Founders League (tournament games against Founders League opponents do not count as Founders League games) heading into January. The road ahead will be tough indeed: among other games we have a re-match against Suffield, two more against Choate, and two each against Loomis (which is very athletic this year), Kent (which appears to be more talented than any team in the west) Berkshire and, of course, Hotchkiss. But we're confident that we can hang with anyone on our schedule if we play the kind of tough D we played in the tournament, and if our bench players give us quality minutes as they have thus far.

A vs Brooks
49-21 W
Now in the tournament's losers' bracket, Taft drew a scrappy Brooks team, but one which lost many of its better players to graduation last spring AND had lost to Nobles just twenty minutes prior to the tip-off against us. Up 27-11 at the half, our girls opened up an insurmountable lead soon after the intermission. Ches Fowler, playing her best game in a Taft uniform to date, led us offensively -- along with Katie Bergeron -- with 11 points. Katherine Latham and Colleen Sweeney were close behind with 9 and 8 points, respectively. Clare Maltman and Liesl Morris had 4 points a piece, and Christine Trusio hit a pair of free throws. Annie Fierberg came off the bench to grab six rebounds.

A vs Suffield
42-43 L
In the first round of the tournament, we drew perennial Western New England power Suffield Academy. Sure enough, this year they have three 6 foot players who gave us fits. But our (undersized) big men fought theirs hard, and the game was close throughout. At the buzzer, Colleen Sweeney had a great look at a mid-range jumper which she put up with confidence -- but it rimmed out.
Superb in the loss was Katie Bergeron, who finished with 22 points, six steals and four rebounds.

A vs Kingswood-Oxford
49-26 W
A close game at the intermission evolved into a lopsided win as Taft clamped down defensively and started hitting its shots in the second half to earn its first win of the season in its Founders League opener. Leading the way was Colleen Sweeney, who netted 25 points and pulled in six rebounds. Katie Bergeron and Katherine Latham also played fine all-around games; Katie scored 9, dished out four assists and had five steals, while Katherine had 3 points, eight boards, and three steals. Our sophomore forward tandem of Ches Fowler and Annie Fierberg also did some good things out there. Ches' six rebounds (five at the offensive end) complemented her 2 points and two steals, while Annie collected five caroms and added a hoop. Brooke Hartley and Liesl Morris (4 points each) played especially well at both ends off the bench.
After exams, we play games on three consecutive days starting next Wednesday at the Loomis Tournament (our first time there). Our first round opponent is Suffield Academy.

A vs Nobles
35-49 L
The 2006-07 girls' varsity basketball team opened its season the same way the 2005-06 closed its campaign: with a lopsided loss at Nobles. Still, there were many silver linings: spirited defense against a much taller team, no let-up even when we were down big in the second half (we cut the lead to five at one point), and 9-for-10 free throw shooting by captain Colleen Sweeney to name a few. And while our shooting wasn't quite as frigid as it was last year in Dedham, we weren't exactly scorching the nets, either, as our nine field goals suggest.
We look for our first win Wednesday on the road at K-O.

A vs Nobles
23-49 L
Taft 23 Nobles 49
(Final record: 15-7)
As anyone who knows basketball can tell you, shooting comes and goes. This afternoon for us, it went...and hid. A reasonably close game at the break (Nobles up 21-13) became a rout in the second half when our shooting, cold the first sixteen minutes, turned absolutely frigid. Against Nobles' tough zone D, we stuck one jump shot all game. You read that right. And their height advantage inside meant that we got few second opportunities. So while we played hard and managed to manufacture some offense from defense, it wasn't nearly enough to stay close to the number three seed from Dedham, Mass. Nobles was definitely the better team today.
But just reaching the Class A New England tournament was a real achievement considering where we were a few games into January. And after a few tears, the hurt of today's loss healed pretty quickly -- the memories of twelve straight wins to close out the regular schedule and, more important, all the fun the girls had together, were just too powerful. It was a successful season by any measure, and I was fortunate to have been part of it.
Thank you to the players' family members who made the long drive to support us today (and who did so, so often all winter), to assistant coach Lydia Finley (who had a long-standing commitment and could not be there today -- just as well, coach), and mostly to our four seniors -- co-captain Shayna Bryan, Ashley Russell, Taylor Bodnar, and Liz Carlos -- for setting the right tone of working hard but having fun from day one.

A vs Hotchkiss
54-34 W
This regular season finale was a much better game than the first contest between these two teams a few weeks ago. Hotchkiss played determined basketball in the first half, and we were a step slow on defense. The result was fifteen first half fouls against us -- and just a four point halftime lead, 31-27. In the second half, we clamped down defensively and slowly pulled away.
Two of our players finished in double figures: junior co-captain Colleen Sweeney with 15 points (and six rebounds) and four-year varsity player Ashley Russell with 10 (and four steals). Captain Shayna Bryan (another four-year varsity player), competing in her final game against Hotchkiss, was her typical self on D: five steals (to go with 5 points and four assists). Taylor Bodnar had a nice all-around game -- 4 points, six boards, three assists -- as did fellow senior Liz Carlos, with 6, four and two. Sophomore Katherine Latham had three steals and five assists to go with her 6 points, and fellow soph Chelsea Berry had two buckets (4 pts.), four boards, two assists, and three steals. Our other two sophomores, Christine Trusio and Brooke Hartley, didn't break into the score column but continued to show the enormous progress they've made at both ends this year. Finally, freshman post player Chesleigh Fowler played her physical brand of ball and scored 4 points.

H vs Berkshire
65-37 W
On senior day, each of our four seniors started, played many minutes and contributed greatly to the win against a Berkshire squad which has been unfortunately wracked by injuries (including one to Jill Fraker Taft '05). Ashley Russell led the way with 16 points, five rebounds and two steals. Co-captain Shayna Bryan (8 points, three assists, two steals) -- as usual, assigned to the opposition's most dangerous guard -- defended tenaciously and recorded her first career 3 pointer in the game's last minute. Liz Carlos, who effectively defended that guard when Shayna wasn't, played a fine all-around game with 2 points, three boards, four assists and two steals. And Taylor Bodnar also filled up the box score with 2 points, four boards, two assists and three steals. These four seniors have travelled starkly different basketball paths during their four years here, but they all wound up in the same place this season -- dedicated equally to hard-working, team-oriented, unselfish play and to having fun -- and have been outstanding role models for the underclassmen.
Two of those underclassmen were honored this week in being named by opposing coaches to the West's Class A All Star team: junior Colleen Sweeney and sophomore Katherine Latham. Congratulations to both.
And thank you to all the dedicated parents and fans who have supported us all season, both at home and on the road -- especially those who kept the faith when we were a 3-6 team in mid-January.
We finish up on the road at Hotchkiss on Saturday.

H vs Miss Porter's
56-33 W
Both teams struggled to score early on in this game, partly due to tough defense, partly to plain cold shooting. And when we finally heated up some, many of our younger players kept it going with great contributions -- especially Clare Maltman (4 points, five steals), who came in and stuck two long jumpers while defending Porter's best (and much taller) player well in relief of Taylor Bodnar. Also playing effectively off the bench were Brooke Hartley (4 points), Chesleigh Fowler (2 points, four rebounds) and Christine Trusio (7 points, two assists). Our leading scorers on the day were Colleen Sweeney (14 tough points, six boards, two steals) and Katherine Latham (13 points, four boards, three steals). But the real star of the game was our team defense, to which all contributed.
Our rematch with Berkshire is Wednesday at home.

A vs Choate
55-38 W
Choate's cavernous, unusual shooting background gym usually means a difficult adjustment for our players. But this year we actually hit several outside shots early on, jumping out to a lead we would never relinquish. Still, it was a seven point game at the half (26-19) and the victory didn't feel well in hand until there were just a few minutes to play. Choate competed hard until the final buzzer.
Katherine Latham led all scorers with 18 points (including a six-for-six effort from the line) to go with her five steals and four rebounds. Colleen Sweeney was right behind her with 15 points and six boards. Ashley Russell played extremely well in limited minutes: 9 points (she, too, was perfect from the charity stripe -- not one of her five free throws even nicked the rim), two rebounds, three steals, two assists. And our four "B-C" guards (Berry, Bodnar, Bryan, Carlos) again made life for the opposing backcourt very unpleasant.
We finish up with a three game week: Miss Porter's and Berkshire at home on Monday and Wednesday, respectively, and Hotchkiss on the road next Saturday.

H vs Williston
60-42 W
This is one of those "much closer than the final score indicates" games. Down thirteen at the half, Williston got the lead down to single digits and then it hovered around ten for most of the rest of the contest, with their determination never letting us feel that the game was in hand until there were just a few minutes left. But our defense carried us, and many players stepped up to make big plays at various points at the offensive end as well.
Chief among them was Colleen Sweeney, who racked up 22 points while hitting from all distances and angles, and who also had six boards. Chelsea Berry scored ten of her 12 points in the first half, most of them on breakaways after a steal of her own or by a teammate. Chelsea also teamed up with Taylor Bodnar (8 points), Shayna Bryan (4 points) and Liz Carlos (2 points) to consistently harass Williston's talented guards into difficult shots. Ashley Russell (7 points) fought through lingering illness to give us an offensive spark. And Katherine Latham, often handling Williston's pressure, simply played a smart and effective all-around game, notching six assists to go with 5 points.
Our rematch with Choate on Saturday at their place will be another severe test.

H vs Hotchkiss
61-33 W
Our starters got us off to a flying start, so we were able to build an early lead and hold it the rest of the game. Shayna Bryan (seven steals for the game), Katherine Latham (four steals) Taylor Bodnar (four steals), and Chelsea Berry (one steal) did most of their defensive damage early, while Colleen Sweeney (seven rebounds in addition to three steals) cleared the boards when Hotchkiss misfired.
Three of our players scored in double figures (Shayna had 10 points, Katherine,13, and Colleen, 14) but almost everyone added to the total. Clare Maltman's five steal performance was especially impressive.

Showing few ill effects (and maybe even benefitting) from several days off, the team came out strong defensively and built a double digit lead by the eight minute mark. By the half it was 32-10, and in the second session all players were able to see many minutes of action.
Colleen Sweeney led us offensively with 14 points in just over one half of play. The scoring was more balanced thereafter, with Katherine Latham (8 points), Chesleigh Fowler (6), Liz Carlos (6), Chelsea Berry (4), Clare Maltman (4), Shayna Bryan (4), and Taylor Bodnar (2) all contributing at least a bucket. Perhaps the best part of this game was that the players on both teams kept hustling and scrapping long after the outcome was decided.

H vs Kent
55-46 W
Avenging a loss from two weeks ago, the team came back from an eight point, second half deficit to rally for the W against a talented, aggressive Kent team. Riding seventeen post-intermission points from Colleen Sweeney (21 points and eleven boards for the game) and nine second half points from Liz Carlos (11 points, three boards and two assists), we poured in thirty-four points in the game's last fourteen minutes -- more than we scored the entire game the first time around against Kent. (The highlight of that stretch was -- appropriately enough -- a Sweeney-to-Carlos play in which Colleen dove on the floor for a loose ball, and then somehow found Liz near the hoop, who hit a twisting layup over their center. It was the kind of "winning basketball" play we've made frequently of late.) Taylor Bodnar (4 points, four rebounds, three assists) and Ashley Russell (6 points, four boards) combined to play great defense on Kent's outstanding big man, and Chelsea Berry (7 points, two steals) played very well at both ends before fouling out relatively early in the second half. Finally, Katherine Latham (5 points) played the whole game, and provided steadiness and good decision-making at both ends throughout -- which we were desperately in need of with co-captain Shayna Bryan out for the game due to injury.
After a well-earned, extended rest, we return to action next Wednesday at home against Westminster.

A vs Hopkins
51-37 W
(Team Record: 7-6)
It was no surprise that after two emotionally and physically draining wins in the last few days, we came out flat and tired looking. Meanwhile, Hopkins -- a young, tall, hard-working, well-coached team -- came to play. The result was a one point game at the intermission. We woke up defensively in the second half and held them to just one field goal (and ten points), and won reasonably comfortably. But there was certainly a lesson learned about the importance of playing intense, smart defense from the opening tip.
Offensively, sophomore Chelsea Berry shone. Averaging about a point per minute played, Chelsea came off the bench and poured in 16 points, including two 3s, and energized us defensively as well. Colleen Sweeney was our other scoring leader, also knocking down two 3s en route to 17 points to accompany her seven rebounds.
Our rematch against Kent is Wednesday at home.

H vs Choate
51-40 W
This was a very close contest until just a few minutes were left; the margin of victory was our largest of the game. But the turning point was at about the eight minute mark. Choate had just rallied to pull within one, we called time out -- and then were able to score immediately afterward on a Liz Carlos to Shayna Bryan (4 points) layup. Gradually, gradually, we built a small lead and maintained it the rest of the way.
Three players were in double figures for us. Colleen Sweeney scored 10 points and had a monster game on the boards, with nine. Ashley Russell scored 14 -- her fifth straight double digit game -- and had four boards. And Katherine Latham had a fine all-around game: 13 points (including 6 of 6 from the line), three rebounds, three assists. Finally, Taylor Bodnar played probably the best game of her Taft career, sticking three jumpers and both her free throws for 8 points, pulling down four rebounds, and expertly defending one of Choate's dangerous perimeter players.
We're on the road against Hopkins tomorrow.

H vs Loomis
52-42 W
(Team Record: 4-6)
In the first game of a home-and-home series against the Pelicans, we took a long time to find our offensive rhythm. But our defensive effort was superb, so when the lid finally came off the basket for us well into the second half, we were only down five (23-18 with 13:00 to play) and were able to pull away gradually for the win.
While everyone did some nice things on the floor, because so often defense begets offense (as the players frequently hear me say) it's no surprise that our steals leaders on the day also led us in scoring. Shayna Bryan had seven steals and a season-high 12 points, and Ashley Russell had eight steals and 10 points. Colleen Sweeney played through pain to pick up 9 points along with four steals, and Katherine Latham notched five assists and five boards to accompany her 6 points. FInally, Chelsea Berry (2 points), Taylor Bodnar (4 points) and Liz Carlos (5 points) all played great defense as well.
We face Loomis at their place Wednesday. No doubt it will be another battle.

A vs Kent
36-39 L
(Team Record: 3-6)
After coming out on fire and jumping out to a double digit lead, Taft watched Kent pick up its defensive intensity and claw their way back into it by halftime, which saw our girls still ahead, 25-24. The second half was a defensive battle. We managed just five points for the first fifteen minutes or so of the half, and it looked like a sure Kent victory. But unanswered buckets by Shayna Bryan, Liz Carlos, and Taylor Bodnar (our senior guard trio) tied it up at 36 with under two minutes to play. Unfortunately, we couldn't answer when they made a few free throws, and the game ended with us misfiring on a three pointer that would have tied it. Still, Kent, at 8-2, is a strong team, and we have no reason to hang our heads.
Katherine Latham led us in scoring with 12 points, all in the first half (she was forced to leave in the second half with a knee injury that we're hoping isn't serious). Ashley Russell was right behind her with 10. Taylor Bodnar had 4 points while doing a fantastic defensive job in the second half on Kent's best player. And Shayna Bryan (2 points) notched ten steals in the contest.
Loomis, who knocked off Kent earlier this season, "looms" on Saturday.

A vs Berkshire
42-33 W
The team went back to defensive basics in practice at the end of the week, and it showed in the victory over Berkshire as we held them to ten field goals. So while we didn't exactly scorch the nets at the offensive end, the combination of tough D and scoring contributions from almost everyone was enough to get us the W. Ashley Russell scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half, and she also garnered five rebounds. Katherine Latham went inside more than she is accustomed to, and played well, finishing with eight boards to go with her 8 points. Shayna Bryan (3 points) somehow managed to pull down seven rebounds from her guard position (she also was the primary defender against Berkshire's very quick and creative point guard), and Clare Maltman came off the bench to put in two big jumpers in the first half when everyone other than Ash was struggling with her shooting. Brooke Hartley and Taylor Bodnar (2 and 3 points, respectively) did all their damage from the foul line, and Liz Carlos had a bucket in the first half. But perhaps the most impressive contribution of the day came from our sole freshman, Chesleigh Fowler. She came off the bench and took advantage of her height advantage very effectively, scoring 7 points (all from the charity stripe) and grabbing seven boards. There's still plenty of room for team improvement, though -- and we'll need to improve between now and Wednesday, when we take on a very strong Kent team at their place.

H vs Deerfield
35-41 L
This was a close contest throughout, and a one point game with just over two minutes to play. But down the stretch, Deerfield hit a few clutch shots and made the most of their height advantage -- and that was the difference. We almost compensated for our lack of size with quickness and tough defense, but didn't finish enough sound defensive trips by rebounding; Deerfield had ten offensive boards in the second half. Also, 23% shooting isn't going to win you too many games (even if you do D up well) and that's what we shot from the floor. Shayna Bryan (4 points) and Katherine Latham (10 points) led the defensive charge with six and seven steals, respectively We have plenty to work on before facing Berkshire at their place Saturday night.

A vs Suffield
25-33 L
This game looked like what it was: two teams trying to shake off the shooting rust accumulated during a long break. That both teams play solid defense only made the offensive ineptitude worse. What should not be overlooked, however, is that after suffering the disappointment of losing an early lead, and the frustration of watching shot after shot clang off the rim (or worse, hit nothing), we didn't quit. Holding Suffield to just ten second half points (they were up 23-12 at the half), Taft was down by just six with two minutes to go, but couldn't get closer. Also not to be overlooked was the all-around effort of senior Ashley Russell. Working hard to adjust to her new role as a big man after playing guard her whole life, Ashley yesterday saw her labors bear real fruit for the first time. She led us in points with 9 and rebounds with eleven, and defended well Suffield's outstanding inside player. Ash's efforts almost compensated for the limited minutes and effectiveness of Colleen Sweeney (4 points) who is still hobbled by a sprained ankle. We'll need more offense from everyone against Deerfield on Wednesday.

A vs Milton
43-36 W
We finally broke into the tournament win column against Milton on Friday afternoon -- although as many offensive rebounds as we gave up and turnovers we committed, it's not really fair to say we outplayed them. Both teams were just dog tired. But a lot of our players stepped up to pick up the scoring slack created by Colleen and Chelsea's absence. While Katherine Latham and Ashley Russell led us with 14 and 11 points, respectively, Clare Maltman, Christine Trusio, Taylor Bodnar, Shayna Bryan, Liz Carlos and Chesleigh Fowler all scored at least two points, with Liz' two offensive rebound/put backs being most noteworthy. We have a lot to work on before meeting a good Suffield team at their place in our first game after the break, but we know at this point that we can defend well enough to be competitive in most games, even against strong opponents.

A vs Tabor
35-62 L
Against the usual assortment of taller, more skilled players from Tabor, we played pretty well, and were down by ten at the 15:00 mark. Then the skies opened up in the form of Colleen (12 points, four rebounds) spraining her ankle and having to leave the game, and their outside shooters heating up, and soon enough it was a laugher. Chelsea Berry, who also had to come out of the game for awhile after suffering what we think is a minor injury, played particulary well in defeat, scoring 8 points and garnering three rebounds.

A vs GDA
43-53 L
The first of these games, played Thursday night against GDA, was the best of the lot. The two teams were evenly matched, although we were down seven at the half. But we clawed back to tie it on a Colleen Sweeney (17 points, eight rebounds and named to the all-tournament team) put back with 3:30 to play. Thereafter, though, the strain of the comeback was apparent, and we couldn't get over the proverbial hump when GDA responded with a few clutch baskets. Ashley Russell played well in defeat, grabbing ten rebounds to go with her 7 points. Amazingly, diminutive guard Shayna Bryan had seven rebounds as well as three steals while covering GDA's most dangerous player. And one individual, very bright side to the loss was that Katherine Latham (also named to the all-tournament team), who had played on her former school's varsity team since she was a seventh grader, went over 1,000 points for her career after netting 19 points (and six steals) in this game. That made for a cheerier-than-usual, post-loss locker room.

H vs Kingswood-Oxford
50-33 W
The team rebounded nicely from the lopsided loss to Nobles to notch its first win of the season against an aggressive Kingswood team. Co-captains Shayna Bryan (five steals) and Colleen Sweeney (12 points) along with Chelsea Berry (4 points) and Ashley Russell (5 points) set the defensive tone from the start, sharply limiting the good scoring opportunities of K-O's better players. At the offensive end, seven Taft players scored, with newcomer Katherine Latham leading the way with 21 points. This was our first Founders League game and the last one before the week off for exams, so the win was especially sweet. Next Thursday we leave for three games in less than 24 hours at the Tabor Tournament in Marion, Massachusetts.

H vs Nobles
17-46 L
Taft scored the first field goal of each half; otherwise, Nobles controlled the game. We competed hard and had many outstanding defensive moments. But prolonged scoring spells in both the first and second half were too much to overcome. Surprisingly, it was still a game with just over ten minutes to play, with Nobles ahead 27-14, but we just couldn't muster anything offensively, and Nobles pulled away. None of this is too surprising given our team's youth and the fact that we've been together for just three days. Still, we'll have to learn from our mistakes quickly if we're to be ready for Kingswood at home on Wednesday.
