The junior varsity boys' golf team opened up their season this afternoon at the "TPC of Watertown." Today, they welcomed the Kent Lions and their coach Todd Thompson, Taft class of 1982 and former faculty member at The Taft School from 1989-1993. Playing conditions were ideal as the course was dry, the traditional wind was blowing from the north, and the greens were fast. Lower Mid Owen McGowan led all players with an outstanding score of 39! Closely behind McGowan were fellow classmate Bob Meng and Middler Jack Dayton with a pair of 41's. This was a scoring round for all the Taft JV golfers and as a team, the boys played well. With that said, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done in regards to each individual improving their game. Coaches Murphy and Giffen are confident that this year's group of golfers will continue to practice with a purpose and push one another for an exciting season. Taft scores are as follows:

H vs Choate Rosemary Hall
233-242 W
This was a memorable match for our young junior varsity golfers. We played host to three outstanding opponents in a quad match at the TPC Waterown against Choate, Hotchkiss, and Westminster. All three schools have historically fielded very good jv golf teams and this year was no different. Today's weather was awful, the last three holes were played in a torrential rain storm. To the credit of all the golfers, they just found a way to "grind it out," and the vast majority of them posted very good scores considering the conditions. Fortunately, the young rhinos were able to finish their spring athletic season by defeating all opponents today by playing arguably their best round of golf as a team!
Hayden Pascal led all golfers with 41, earning medalist honors, which was just outstanding considering the conditions!

Taft played host this afternoon to the Canterbury "Saints" and the Berkshire "Bears" in a 9 hole medal play match at the TPC of Watertown. Fortunately, for the junior varsity golfers the weather cooperated and the rain stayed away. With that said, there was considerable wind this afternoon on top of the hill, so playing conditions were not perfect. Taft's Jack Dayton led all players with a 39, and he was closely followed by fellow "Rhino" Hayden Pascal posting a 40! The young "Rhinos" are finally starting to find a little consistency in their game, which could not be coming at a bettr time, as they head into their last match of the year against excellent opponents on Wednesday, the Hotchkiss "Bearcats" and the Westminster "Martlets."

Today, the Taft junior varsity golfers played their best round of the year against a very good Loomis Chaffee team at Wintonbury Hills Golf Course in Bloomfield. Highlights of the day were the play of Taft lower-mid Jack Porcelli (38) medalist and Loomis Chaffee's Kenny Kim; who "aced" hole #3 from the green markers which was about 146 yards. Congratulations, Kenny. What was most pleasing to this junior varsity golf coach was the play by all contestants; all players were under 50 for 9 holes. The Loomis boys were great hosts, they were gentleman, and they should be commended for their sportsmanship. The rhinos would like to wish them the best with the balance of their season.
Next up for the rhinos is a home match Saturday against Berkshire and Canterbury at the TPC of Watertown!

The jv golfing rhinos did not have their best today at the TPC of Watertown. In fact, their team score of 270 was the highest team score the lower level golfing rhinos have posted in recent years. But, as a wise old golfer once told this jv golf coach, "son, with the game of golf, sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you!" Well, it safe to say, the bear ate the rhinos today. They just did not have their best stuff. Congratulations to Canterbury on their fine win, and the rhinos would like to wish them well with the balance of their season. Taft will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they go on the road to play perennial junior varsity golfing powers Avon Old Farms and Westminster School.

Taft's Cameron Ortega led the way for the rhinos with a 41. He was followed by fellow middler Hayden Pascal 43 and lower mid John Jones 46. Ninth graders Ben Leung and Jake Lord rounded out Taft's top five with a 50 and 51.

The Junior Varsity Taft Golfers travelled to "The Tradition" golf course today in Wallingford CT to take on the home team Choate Roseamary Hall and visting Kingswood - Oxford. For those Connecticut golf enthusiasts, "The Tradition" is a tight course that is well marked with "white stakes" on either the left side of the course or the right side. Given that there were plenty of areas where one could hit a ball "ob" and swirling winds; the playing conditions were challenging for all competitors. Ryan Marinelli from Kingswood - Oxford was the medalist for the day with a score of 43. Today's score against Hotchkiss was surprising and then again, not so surprising. After losing to both Choate and NMH last Saturday with a team score somewhere in the 250s, the young rhinos committed themselves to imrpoving their individual golf games on Monday and Tuesday. The hard work on the practice green and around the green, "chipping & putting" paid dividends, as they improved their team score by 30 strokes!!!! Consider this, we count the top 5 scores, so that means, as a team each player improved by 6 strokes today.
With that said, the young golfing rhinos still have a lot of work in front of them, as we all know golf can humble the best golfers in the world!

Today at the Watertown Golf Club, under near perfect playing conditions, the first junior varsity boys golf match of the season proved to be a success. The young "rhinos" were nervous, but they found a way to defeat a much improved Kent team. The golfing "rhinos" were led by Upper Mid Captain Peter Tweedley this afternoon, as not only was today his birthday, but he was also the "medalist" for the day with the low score of a 43!

Today, was a beautiful day for golf at Watertown Golf Club, the sun was out, the temperature was cool, and there was a healthy wind blowing out of the north. The junior varsity golfing rhinos finished their season on a real team high, as Max Kachur posted a 41 for co-medalist honors, and his best score of the year! What has pleased me most about today's results, is that it was a microcosm of our season, we played good team golf. All season long, we changed our line-up, constantly rotating guys in and guys out of the line-up, on who was hot and who was not! No one got frustrated, everyone worked hard to improve their game and to lower their score for the benefit of the team. I am proud to have had the opportunity to work with this group, as they represented themselves and Taft well all spring!

With the help of Mike Brunelli's 37 (medalist), the jv golfing rhinos had their best outing of the season to date, posting a team score of 206. All Taft players played well, as they rebounded very nicely from their two previous losses to Loomis Chaffee and Avon Old Farms. A vs Loomis Chaffee School
234-213 L
This afternoon the junior varsity boys' golf team traveled over to Wintonbury Hills in Bloomfield to take on the Loomis Chaffee Pelicans. The course was in great shape, the playing conditions were ideal, partly cloudy, cool temperatures, and a gentle breeze. Host school Loomis played a great round of team golf, posting a team score of 214, which is about a scoring average of 43.5 per player; very good for junior varsity golf! In fact, that is the lowest junior varsity golf score this coach has seen by any junior varsity golf team all spring. The rhinos played a solid round, not their best, but not their worst. Taft averaged a little under 47 per player, which is okay, but just not good enough today! The boys will get back to work "on the practice range" tomorrow, as they will look to rebound from their second loss of the season this Saturday at home against Berkshire and Canterbury.

H vs Choate Rosemary Hall
On Wednesday, Taft hosted its first home race of the year. It was cold and raining at Bantam Lake, but the winds were calm which made for great racing conditions.
The first race of the day was the Fifth Boat, which matched up against Choate’s Fifth and Sixth. Choate’s Fifth moved quickly off the start, leaving Taft to play catch-up for the race. Taft, however, was able to move nicely away from Choate’s Sixth, gaining a half length by the 500 meter mark. At the midpoint of the race, Choate Fifth was up on Taft by about half a length, and each crews made a push to gain the advantage. During this middle move Taft was able to increase its lead on Choate Sixth, and keep pace with Choate Fifth. Coming down the sprint, the Taft crew emptied the tank, but was unable to gain on Choate Fifth, but came across the line a good three lengths ahead of Choate Sixth.
In the Fourth Boat race the Taft girls got off to a rough start, but in the Power 20 were able to quickly establish the lead. At 500 meter mark Taft held a lead of two seats. Prior to the midpoint, Choate pushed with a Power 10, but Taft was able to fight them off and then counter by moving away from Choate. Taft built on its lead through the sprint and won by two lengths.
The Third Boat got off to a great start and after the first twenty strokes had a two seat lead over Choate. At the 500 meter mark Taft took a Power 10 to which Choate was unable to respond. By the 750 Taft had an open water lead, which they built on to the finish.
Second Boat had one of the strongest starts of the day, gaining the Choate bowball in the first ten strokes. By the 500 meter mark Taft had a lead of nearly a length and by the midpoint had open water on Choate. After the middle move, Taft tired and Choate was able to close the gap to about a length of water. In the sprint though, Taft surged and beat Choate by three lengths.
First Boat took a strong start and was up by a seat after the first twenty strokes. Rowing from in front the Taft crew was able to press its advantage at the 500 meter mark and take Choate’s bowball. At the middle move Taft built on its marginal lead even further. However, in the last 500 Choate started walking on Taft. In the first strokes of the sprint Taft rowed with authority and gained back a seat on Choate. However, in the last strokes Taft started to fade, and Choate moved in fast. With determination Taft was able to hold off Choate’s final push for a victory of one second. The closest race of the day.
On Saturday Taft will host its last home race of the year against The Gunnery, Canterbury, and Miss Porter’s School. These crews should bring a tough challenge for Taft, but everyone is eager to build on Wednesday’s success. Saturday’s racing is tentatively scheduled to start at 2:45.

Today, the junior varsity golfing Rhinos rebounded and played a better round of team golf that truly reflected their abilities at Egremont Country Club in Egremont Massachusetts. Four of the five Taft golfers scored in the high 40s, which is exactly the type of team golf, we have been striving for all season. "Lower-mid" Mike Brunelli led the way with a 43 and was also the medalist for the day. Fellow "Lower-mid" Peter Tweedley also had his best round of the season scoring a 46. But today, they did not have the same depth and consistency in their scoring. The Rhino junior varsity golf team did not distinguish themselves today at "The Tradition Golf Club" of Wallingford. In fact, this was by far the worst "9 hole" round of golf the junior varsity Rhinos have played in recent memory. Although we were all disappointed with the team's performance, the boys were able to take away some valuable lessons about course management that should serve them well in future matches this spring. Congratulations to our opponents Choate - Rosemary Hall and Kingswood - Oxford for their fine play, and especially to Katie Partridge from Choate, who was "the medalist" today with a very good score of 40. H vs Hotchkiss School
237-253 W
Conditions: Sunny, Warm, & Windy.
Location: Watertown Golf Course (9 hole Match)
This is arguably the friendliest athletic contest between the two storied independent secondary schools. The 9 hole golf contest between the Hotchkiss JV Boys' Team and The Taft School JV Boys' Team has officially become known as the "Dunkin Donut" match. Started last year by the legendary Hotchkiss JV Golf Coach Al Bertsch, both teams are rewarded with a two dozen assortment of donuts from Dunkin Donuts at the end of the nine hole round, with the visiting team always taking the extra donuts, due to the fact they have to travel forty-five minutes back to school. The scoring today was tough because the wind was blowing hard from the north, the course was dry, which meant fast and slippery greens!
