H vs Hopkins School
10-10 T

Taft finished the season with a hard-fought tie against Hopkins on Wednesday.  Our scoring was spread out among Maddie Haight, Izzy Stack, Dana Biddle, Laura Feidelson, Issy Tabah, and Madison Haskins.  Karlea Peterson had one her best games of the season, making some particularly great cuts through the midfield.  Sophie Snook provided steady leadership all over the field, and Natalie Kapp and Kaela Gilbert, recently returned from injuries and illness, completed the offense.  Senior, Clair Beltran, ended a distinguished four year career in the lacrosse program.  She played tight defense all over the field, particularly off the crease.  Colleen Iannone, Maddie Olmstead, Sami Albert, and Maggie Blatz (in goal) also played key roles in defending Hopkins' offfensive efforts.  It was a fine team effort.

5/18/2012
H vs Litchfield High School
13-5 W

Taft was able to captialize on their hard work over the past two weeks, earning a big win against an aggressive Litchfield Club team.  The game was tight throughout the first half as Taft worked to gain confidence in a pretty rough and tumble contest.  Draw control was a veritable scrum, but the Rhinos worked hard both in the air and off the ground to gain possession of the ball.  Taft's defense was tough, and the offensive transitions were some of the best of the season with some pretty midfield connections.  Offensively, Taft had to work hard against a good Litchfield goalie and saw some nice goals both off of fast breaks and settled attack.  Sophie Snook and Laura Feidelson were quite the dynamic duo in 2v1 scoring situations, each setting the other up several times throughout the game.  Other offensive contributors were Maddie Haight, Dana Biddle, Issy Tabah, and Kaela Gilbert.  Our defense was lead by Maddie Olmstead and Maggie Blatz in goal.  Special thanks to Kayla Romano-Pringle, Mia Polokov, and Adeline Ewing - all players from the 3rds team who also played in yesterday's game.

5/16/2012
A vs Choate Rosemary Hall
12-5 L

Taft's goal on Wednesday was to play with poise.  The team did many things well - they responded to Choate's midfield pressure by using trail passes and changing fields, they possesed the ball for longer periods of time in our settled offense, and they worked to turn the ball over on Choate's offensive transition.  Unfortunately, some of the basics in terms of skills continued to challenge the Rhinos.  They struggled to pass and catch, especially under pressure, and draw control continued to elude them.  Scoring was difficult, but Maddie Haight, Sophie Snook, Natalie Kapp, and Laura Feidelson each found the back of the net at least once.  Defensively, Issy Tabah anchored the team with support from Maddie Olmstead, Colleen Iannone, Clair Beltran, and goalie, Maggie Blatz.

H vs Convent of the Sacred Heart
12-4 L

Taft faced a skilled CSH team on Saturday.  The Rhinos struggled to get and maintain possession throughout the game and consequently found themselves on the defensive side of the game for much of the contest.  True to character, however, this team didn't give up, and though the deck was stacked against them, they did find a little momentum towards the end of the game, scoring four goals off of our settled offense.  Karlea Peterson started things off for Taft, and Laura Feidelson, Madison Haskins, and Issy Tabah followed suit.  Colleen Iannone came off a minor illness to support Maddie Olmstead, Sami Albert, and Claire Beltran on the defensive side of things.

5/9/2012
H vs Kent School
15-6 W

Taft played a great game against Kent today.  They took the field ready to play hard, and they dominated play all over the field.  The Rhinos won two-thirds of the draws, the majority of ground balls, and played tight, goal-side defense all over the field.  However, between Kent's slow-paced offense and some missed chances, Taft found themselves tied with Kent, 3-3, at halftime.  Though we wanted to continue to play much the same in the second half, the team needed to capitalize better on their scoring opportunities.  Taft took the field and scored ten unanswered goals.  They continued to win draws and scored off of fast breaks as well as some well-executed set plays.  Goals were scored by Maddie Haight, Dana Biddle, Issy Stack, Sophie Snook, Laura Feidelson, and Issy Tabah.  Colleen Iannone had her best game of the season contributing some very fine offense as well as her usual reliable defense.  Maddie Olmstead, Sami Albert, and Claire Beltran played patient defense and helped Maggie Blatz hold Kent to six goals.

5/2/2012
A vs Greenwich Academy
15-4 L

There is not much to say about Taft's game against a very skilled GA team yesterday.  The girls played hard to the end, but really couldn't get anything going.  Goals were scored by Madison Haskins, Issy Stack, Maddie Haight, and Issy Tabah.  Colleen Iannone had her best game yet on defense, but ultimately GA proved too much.

4/25/2012
A vs Westminster School
18-7 L

It was just not Taft's day up in Simsbury yesterday.  In the early minutes, the Rhinos could not get and/or keep the ball in their sticks, and an athletic Westminster team went up early by a good margin and never looked back.  After some adjustments on the center circle, Taft was finally able to start winning some draws (largely thanks to the agressive play of Sophie Snook and Madison Haskins), and get on the board.  Despite a cold deluge throughout much of the middle of the game, Taft chipped away at Westminster's lead with some fantastic defense from Maddie Olmstead as well as a few beautiful midfield transitions.  Unfortunately, the gap was just too great.  Goals were scored by Issy Stack, Sophie Snook, Issy Tabah, and Natalie Kapp.

4/24/2012
H vs Miss Porter's School
12-11 W

Taft won a barn burner against a much improved MPS team on Tuesday.  The scoring was back and forth the whole game with the final, winning goal coming with just minutes to go in the second half.  Taft's defense was very strong, and Maggie Blatz had another very good day in goal.  Not only did she make some key saves in such a close game, but she cleared the ball with confidence and accuracy, allowing for some very nice passing sequences in our offensive transition.  Goals were evenly distributed among the attack players.  Laura Feidelson, Issy Stack (in her much awaited return from illness), Sophie Snook, Dana Biddle, Kaela Gilbert, and Issy Tabah all found the back of the net at least once.

4/21/2012
A vs Deerfield Academy
10-8 L

Taft played in another close contest on Saturday against Deerfield.  Though outmatched in numbers by nearly two to one, the small, but mighty Taft team dug in and competed until the very end.  Deerfield jumped out to an early four goal lead as Taft struggled to shake off the sluggishness that comes with a one hour and 45 minute bus ride.  As the Rhinos began to focus and play hard, the scoring became more back and forth.  Taft slowly chipped away and ultimately found themselves within one in the final minutes of the game  Unfortunately, Deerfield went into a stall, and again Taft found themselves lacking possession when it really counted.  They were unable to get the ball as the clock ticked down while Deerfield scored one last time to ensure their victory.  The offensive efforts were led by Laura Feidelson and Dana Biddle, with Issy Stack and Sophie Snook each contributing a goal as well.  Madision Haskins continued to dominate the defense flanked by Maddie Olmstead, Claire Beltran, and Sami Albert.  Maggie Blatz had a season high nine saves, which undoubtedly kept Taft in the game.

4/18/2012
H vs Loomis Chaffee School
10-8 L

Taft had a great battle with Loomis on Wednesday.  They were two evenly matched teams, and the outcome came down to the final minutes of the game.  The scoring was back and forth for much of the first half with the score tied at 6 apiece at half time.  Loomis came out strong in the second half and took a comfortable four goal lead.  Loomis then began to stall in an attempt to prevent Taft from having any more scoring opportunities.  However, Taft was not going to give up, and the defense fought hard to regain possession on several occasions as the clock ticked down.  The Rhinos were able to close the gap to 10-8 before time ran out.  Goals were scored by Laura Feidelson, Dana Biddle, Sophie Snook, and Issy Tabah.  Maggie Blatz had a banner day in goal, making seven saves as well as a number of key clears into our offensive transition.  Claire Beltran, Sami Albert, and Madison Haskins continued to be anchors of the defense, supported by Maddie Olmstead, Colleen Iannone, and Natalie Kapp.  It was a great effort by all and an exciting measure of the improvement the team has made over the first few weeks of the season.

4/14/2012
A vs Ethel Walker School
16-7 W

Taft's game against Ethel Walker started off on the sloppy side with lots of unforced turnovers and difficulties controling the draws and ground balls.  Ethel Walker also pressured our settled offense in an unfamiliar way, and Taft had a hard time making the necessary adjustments.  Finally, however, the team began to pass and catch better through the midfield and to challenge past the overly agressive defense, ultimately winning the game by a comfortable margin.  Goals were scored by Laura Feidelson, Dana Biddle, Sophie Snook, Kaela Gilbert, Issy Tabah, Natalie Kapp, and Maddie Olmstead.  Maggie Blatz provided a steady presence in the cage for the defensive efforts of Colleen Iannone, Madison Haskins, and Claire Beltran.

H vs Berkshire School

A vs Kingswood-Oxford School
10-8 W

The girls' JV lacrosse team won their season opener against Kingswood Oxford 10-8.  The team traveled up to West Hartford on a Thursday excited to put their hard work in practice over the past 10 days into action.  KO was a strong squad, and they dominated draw and ground ball possession for the first half.  Nevertheless, Taft played tough and stayed in the game.  The Rhinos began to pull away in the second half, and though KO went on a late run, Taft hung on to emerge with a great first victory.  Goals were scored by Laura Feidelson, Issy Stack, Sophie Snook, Dana Biddle, Kaela Gilbert, and Maddie Haight.  Maggie Blatz had a fine debut in the cage backed up by defenders, Maddie Haskins, Issy Tabah, and Claire Beltran.

11-0 W

We finished our fantastic season with a rare lacrosse shutout!  As usual, we had a wide variety of goal scorers but our leaders were Ali Tucci with three and Rachel Muskin with 4.  Issy Tabah added two more and Claire Allen and Annelies Van Breen added one apiece.  Some of the scoring highlights include Ali Tucci running a new play but the ball was checked out of her stick.  However, she re-acted very quickly and was able to pick up the ground ball and take a quick shot.  We scored another great goal off a ground ball when Colleen Marcik recovered the ball on the ground, looked up and quickly saw Ali on the right.  She made a quick pass over the Ali who got the goal.  Finally the best game of the goal was the two Issys!  Issy Stack had the ball behind the net and Issy Tabah cut in a received a pass from Issy Stack and she took a quick stick shot.

Lynndy Smith played in goal for us in the first half and recorded a shutout for the half.  Katharine Gahagan played very well on the field for the first half but returned to the net in the second half and she maintained the shutout.  They each made 4 saves.  As usual on defense down low was Clair Beltran, Gwen McGee and Emma Stein who are some of the toughest and smartest defenders around.  Our midfield defenders included Georgia Bermingham who never lets a ground ball go unchallenged, Kelly Gaston who plays with tremendous intensity and Issy Tabah who is very effective but not flashy.  Margot Daiber, Colleen Marcik and Cassidy Lowther were all on attack and worked so hard throughout the game cutting for the ball and making plays happen.

This was a truly amazing team.  We dealt with horrible weather, many, many injuries, including ones that were season ending, and we shared players with the thirds team all season.  Despite all these hurdles we had one of the best JV lacrosse seasons in a while.  But not only was this a skilled team on the field, we all supported each other and enjoyed being with each other every day.   This season will be remembered for years to come but this team will be sorely missed.

5/16/2011
H vs Hotchkiss School
8-9 L

For a second game in a row we lost in a score of 8-9, this time to Hotchkiss.  It was a very strange game and in part because we only had two assisted goals and the rest were either free positions or goals that were run in.  As has been the case in other games, we had trouble generating an offense and taking good shots.  Our defense was strong and Katharine had her best game of the season with a record 16 saves!  She had many that were great but she had one in particular when we were winning 8-6.  We had been up 8-5 and that save kept us in the lead for a while longer.  Unfortunately we lost it, but it slowed the Hotchkiss momentum.

Hotchkiss took the lead early scoring within the first 30 seconds of the game.  They went up 2-0 quickly.  We tied it up and took the lead 3-2 about halfway through the first half.  Hotchkiss scored the next two goals and were up 4-3.  Goal number four was reminiscent of Cassidy and Colleens’ goal of Saturday.  This time Rachel Muskin had the ball in the midfield on a free position and she chucked the ball 25 yards to Colleen who was not in the best position at that point to shoot.  In the meantime, Annelies has sprinted down field on the opposite side and was wide-open heading to the net.  Colleen hit her on the run and Annelies took a quick shot to tie the game with 7 seconds left in the first half.

We scored quickly in the first half when Issy Stack had a free position but Hotchkiss tied it back up shortly after.  It was now 5-5.  We then went onto to score 3 unanswered goals to take the lead 8-5.  Rachel Muskin scored two of those goals and Cassidy Lowther scored the third.  However, with 10 minutes left we fell apart and allowed Hotchkiss to score 4 unanswered goals to give them the lead with 3 minutes left.  There was plenty of time, but we struggled to get possession back and when we did we were not successful at getting a shot off.  We worked very hard but just not well enough.

Taft goals: Ali Tucci (1), Annelies Van Breen (1), Cassidy Lowther (2), Rachel Muskin (4)

Taft Assists: Ali Tucci (1), Colleen Marcik (1)

5/14/2011
A vs Convent of the Sacred Heart
8-9 L

We lost a very close game to Sacred Heart; however, we did win the second half.  In fact, if we had just had a few more minutes we could have taken the lead.  We played much better in the second half and the momentum was going our way.  The first half did not go all that well.  We turned the ball over often and did not take good shots.  Claire Allen scored first on a shovel shot, which proved to be a good shot to take on a very good left handed goalie.  We ended the first half down 2-5.

We came out in the second half fired up to play.  Annelies Van Breen stepped up her game big time and had perhaps her best game of the season.  She won the numerous times and controlled the ball in the midfield; she was a real leader on the field.  Issy Tabah moved to offense to take advantage of her left hand when shooting against their lefty goalie.  She scored goal number 4 which brought us closer to taking the lead.  With just a few minutes left we called a timeout and came up with a plan to take the lead.  Right off the draw, Rachel Muskin put the plan into effect, won the draw and scored to bring us within two.  Goal number 8 was one of the most exciting that I have seen.  Cassidy Lowther had the ball in the midfield after she was fouled.  Colleen Marcik had cut low and was wide open very close to the net.  Cassidy chucked the ball over the heads of the defense; the ball hit the ground and took a bounce.  Colleen picked up the ball off the bounce and took a great shot to bring us within 1.  Colleen and Cassidy both had two goals each in the game and Colleen used her shooting skills well as the CSH goalie was very good.  Cassidy played her heart out and this was perhaps her best game.  However, we could not gain possession off the next draw and there were just seconds left on the clock.  A disappointing loss but a great game nonetheless especially considering we lost Laura Feidelson early in the game with an injury, not to mention the three other players on the bench with injuries.

Kelly Gaston, Georgia Bermingham, Emma Stein, Gwen McGee and Clair Beltran were fantastic on defense.  Kelly and Georgia were super speedy in the midfield and Emma, Clair and Gwen were aggressive and turned the ball over numerous times.  Emma led the defense as usual and was all over every ground ball.  She also had a shot on goal and almost scored.

Ali Tucci and Annelies lead our offense.  Ali played consistently well throughout the game. This was a game where absolutely everyone on the field gave it their all and we played like a team.  We are excited to take on Hotchkiss at home on Monday.

A vs Kent School
14-2 W

We played a great game today after our disappointing loss to GA last week as we beat Kent 14-2.  We came out strong and scored right away.  Rachel Muskin was a real playmaker and she set up the first goal when Issy Stack made a great cut right to left across the goal.  Annelies Van Breen also had a huge impact on the game today with three assists and two goals.  She also pressured her girl on a goalie clear and was able to turnover the ball which she then converted to a goal.  We scored quite a few goals of quick stick passes from behind the net and Annelies scored off a set play in the second half.  Claire Allen had her best game of the season in the challenging defensive wing position.  She had an interception in the second half and a fantastic quick stick goal with the assist going to Colleen Marci.

Our midfield transition was great today and Margot Daiber, who had her best game with three goals, was outstanding in her midfield cuts.  Gwen McGee started the game as our center and won the draw repeatedly and hustled all over the field.   Katharine Gahagan played on the field today instead of in goal and played amazingly well.  She and Rachel doubled the ball in the midfield and forced a turnover and she was quick and aggressive with the ball.  Kasey Pietro returned to the field after a long illness and made great cuts, passes and catches.  But she twisted her ankle badly in the second half and had to leave the game.  Lynndy Smith played in goal for us today and made nine crucial saves.

H vs Greenwich Academy
10-17 L

While the team was fired up and ready to play GA today, we could not find our rhythm and we struggled with the basics of catching and throwing.  We did manage to score 10 very good goals and we had GA within two when the game was 7-9 at the beginning of the second half.  But GA managed to pull away in the second half.  We continued to battle including scoring two great goals with less than two minutes to go.  Cassidy Lowther scored the first of the two when Margot Daiber came back into the game when Issy Stack left the game with an injury.  Margot had the ball to start the play and she found Cassidy in the midfield and she carried the ball straight to the goal and scored.  Cassidy also scored the goal right before that under pressure and managed to score while being double-teamed.

Rachel Muskin and issy Stack connected a couple of times as Rachel assisted two of Issy’s goals.  Gwen McGee was outstanding on defense down low.  We had real difficulty staying on our girls in the midfield and quite a few times open players came straight at the goal ad Gwen was able to pull off and force them outside.  Issy Tabah also played a consistent game of defense both down low and in the midfield; her girl never seemed to be a real threat on the goal.  Emma Stein as usually fought her hardest to keep GA from scoring today.  Sarah Lindenberg worked hard and played through the pain of her hip injury today and helped control our midfield game.  Claire Allen had her first goal of the season and her game has really developed and is a solid midfield player who contributes to both offense and defense.

We look forward to Kent next week.

A vs Litchfield High School
C

It was a team win for the Rhinos today with six different girls scoring.  Taft was able to control nine of the eleven draws against a new Litchfield team.  Scoring started off one minute into the game with a pass from Ali Tucci to Story Viebranz.  Both Story and Ali were dominating forces all game in; Ali had a pair of goals and Story earned three goals.  Adding to the rhinos scoring was Annelies Van Breen with two, who continues to be a valuable team player.  Claire Allen had a beautiful goal late in the second half, beating a defender, switching to her left and placing the ball in the right corner of the net.  Emma Stein who has been one of Taft’s rocks on defense, worked her way into the rhino’s attack, where she earned her first goal of the season.  Kate Standish had an excellent game in net saving four shots and letting in one goal.  Taft will head down to GA on Wednesday.

4/27/2011
H vs Westminster School
10-9 W

Taft 10 Westminster 9

This was the most exciting game of our season and a well-deserved victory.  The game got off to a quick start with Taft winning the draw as Emma Stein grabbed the ground ball and passed off to Rachel Muskin who took it down field quickly and went straight to goal.  However, Westminster answered back and the game was tied at 1 apiece.  Westminster had a number of attempts at the goal but Lynndy Smith was incredible in goal and made a series of huge saves.  Sarah Lindenberg had the only other goal of the half off a free position shot.  The first half proved to be very strange with the whistle blowing constantly and three yellow cards were given out.  Taft earned one and had to play a man down for three minutes and Westminster had one in the first and one in the second.  Neither team could get a rhythm going and each team continued to turn the ball over.  At the half time we decided to put the first half out of our mind and focus on playing our game.  We went into the second half down 3-2.

Ali Tucci scored the first goal of the half and Laura Feidelson scored the second goal after winning the draw.  It was a bit back and forth after that but we finally found our grove when Ali Tucci made a quick stick pass to Laura who scored the go ahead goal.  We then went onto to score 4 unanswered goals and now had a sizable lead.  However, Westminster would not be deterred and they controlled possession of the ball for the last 8 minutes of the half and got within one.  We had possession of the ball off the draw with less than 30 seconds on the clock.  However, Westminster had a perfect check and turned the ball over and ran it down for the tying goal.  We had 23 seconds on the clock.  Sophie Snook won the draw taken by Rachel Muskin and ran it down field.  Under huge pressure from the Westy defense she was able to find Ali Tucci for the pass.  Ali was tripled teamed but that enable Rachel Muskin to sneak in behind and was wide open in front of the net.  Ali threated the needle through the onslaught of the Westy defense and hit Rachel who did not have the best angle for a shot.  Rachel spun left and switched to her left hand and scored the game winner with her non-dominant hand with 4 seconds left on the clock.

Our defense of Gwen McGee, Issy Tabah, Laura Feidelson, Georgia Berminham and, led by captain Emma Stein, played out of their minds today.  And Lynndy in goal was tremendous as this was her first real test as a lacrosse goalie and she passed with flying colors.  Everyone on attack contributed to this win today but I did want to mention the assist that Annelies had on Colleen’s goal as the two of them were perfectly in sync.  Ali Tucci was incredible and she gave absolutely everything she had today and was a significant factor in our win.  Not only did she have incredible goals, she had the game winning assist and she doubled the ball on defense all over the field.

Scoring Summary: Colleen Marcik (1), Ali Tucci (2), Rachel Muskin (4), Laura Feidelson (2), Sarah Lindenberg (1)

A vs Miss Porter's School

Taft 12

Miss Porter’s 4

After playing in rain and chilly temperatures we finally had a beautiful sunny and hot day to play.  We were missing our goalie, Katherine Gahagan, but Issy Stack and Colleen Marcik volunteered to step into the goal and they did an amazing job.  They both also had great games on the field and scored a total of 3 goals between the two.  While we did dominate the game, Miss Porter’s challenged us and kept the pressure on throughout the game.  Other highlights of the game include Annelies' lost possession of the ball in the midfield and was beat, but she hustled down to the ball and forced a turnover to regain possession.  Emma Stein also forced a turnover when she checked a Miss Porter’s attack low on the field and won the ground ball.  She passed off too Margot who took the ball down for one of her two goals.  Kelley Gaston also had a turnover, which has now become a regular occurrence for her.  Gwen McGee left low defense and played a great game on attack in the second including scoring a blistering goal!  One of the best goals of the came was when Annelies behind the goal made a perfect pass to Laura Feidelson who quick sticked it in.  Clair Beltran also never gave up on defense and had a check and turnover with just 30 second left on the clock.  Everyone worked very hard in this game despite the heat and had a well-earned win.

H vs Deerfield Academy
C

Taft goals: Annelies Van Breen (3), Kasey Pietro (1), Ali Tucci (1), Story Viebranz (1)

The game began well as Taft’s Annelies Van Breen scored first within the first minute of the game.  A minute later Deerfield answered back.  We won the first few draws and the game was evenly played and it was tied a 4 goals apiece halfway through the first half.  Then three players at once had to come off the field to fix illegal mouth guards and in the confusion Deerfield was able to take the lead.  We re-grouped quickly with quick reactions by Katherine Jack, Tess Kneisel and Claire Allen.  However, we had lost our momentum and struggled to get it back.  We did play effective settled defense but struggled when Deerfield challenged us 1 v. 1.

Individually our defense played well.  Sara Bermingham fought hard for every ground ball and draw control and was successful more times than not. Jackie Michnoff was a leader of the defense and did her best to keep the defense unified.  Emma Stein and Clair Beltran really turned in on in the second half especially and effectively transitioned the ball to the attack.  Kate Standish faced some tough shots from Deerfield but made quite a few really key saves and did her best to keep us in the game.  Katherine Gahagan who normally plays in the goal, played with the defense today and worked hard to be effective on defense.  Ali Tucci and Kasey Pietro had to work hard to get the ball in the midfield as Deerfield put a lot of pressure on us.  On her birthday, Lauren Bly once again show how versatile she is by starting out playing low attack making good cuts for the transition and then moving to low defense where she kept the Deerfield attack from making good cuts.  Story Viebranz was effective off the draw but struggled unusually with scoring as she was under the weather for the game.

We are excited to play Miss Porter’s at home on Monday at 4:30!

A vs Loomis Chaffee School
7-10 L

Taft 7

Loomis 10

Taft goals: Rachel Muskin (3), Ali Tucci (2), Issy Stack (2)

Taft saves: Katherine Gahagan (5)

Despite the loss this was a great and very exciting game.  Loomis got on the board very quickly with a goal off the first draw.  However, Taft answered right back with a goal a few minutes later.  We took the lead for part of the first half but then lost the lead going into the second.  We were within 2 with 5 minutes left in the game.  Loomis was able to control possession so we did not get many shooting opportunities at the end.  Loomis was only able to score their last goal because we were pressuring the ball in the attempt to get it back.

Katherine Gahagan had an outstanding game on defense and had 5 huge saves.  Loomis had quite a few goal scorers on their team but Katherine held her ground.  Emma Stein was rock solid on defense and had one play in particular that was outstanding.  Loomis was awarded the ball over the restraining line as Taft had violated the restraining line rule.  That meant most of our defenders were now behind the ball.  Emma managed to pick up the open Loomis player who was coming full speed down the field and she checked the ball right out of her stick.

Our best goal was number 6 when Annelies drew the defense and Issy Stack cut into the arc and was wide open for Annelies’ pass.

Loomis was very fast and we had a hard time matching their speed.  However, Kelley Gaston and Georgia Bermingham successfully contained their two girls.  Loomis passed the ball very quickly and could transition the ball well and they were very aggressive on offense.  We played very strong settled defense but our midfield game was not as tight as it has been and we were hesitant on attack.  As a result we did not always take smart shots.  Had we been a bit more focused on attack we could have won the game.  Nonetheless we really rose to the challenge that this outstanding Loomis team presented to us.  We look forward to Deerfield at home on Saturday.

4/16/2011
H vs Ethel Walker School
12-1 W

Because of the rain during the game our scorebook got very wet and thus the stats are not totally accurate.  Taft did defeat Ethel Walker 12-1.  When the game began it had not started to rain and Taft quickly dominated the game Colleen Marcik scored first within the first minute of a game.  As a goalie in her two other sports, Colleen understands the skill of perfectly placing her shot and she did jut that on each of her goals in this game.  Our second goal game less than a minute later when Sarah Lindenberg got Margot Daiber a pass right into the sweet spot that enabled Margot to easily find the back of the net.  Our third goal came when Rachel Muskin won the draw and took it down for a quick shot and goal.  Another really nice goal was #7 when Cassidy Lowther found Ali Tucci in front of the net.  In the second half, Issy Tabah who is left-handed took a great shot and scored with her right hand.

We had to play in very difficult conditions but everyone tried their best.  Claire Allen had a great inception and Kelley Gaston forced a number of turnovers.  Georgia Bermingham was effective in the midfield at slowing down Ethel Walker and she also jumped in a played low defense for the first time.  Sarah Lindenberg and Laura Feidelson were both back in fine form after recouping from injuries.  They are both very quick and have excellent stick skills.  Clair Beltran was solid as a rock as usual on low defense and Katherine Gahagan was able to make a nice contribution to the game as field player since we were very lucky to have Lynndy Smith in goal today.  While Lynddy did not see much action, it is clear that she has picked up the sport very quickly and I am sure she will help us out greatly in future games.

Special thanks to our managers Jordan Stone and Frankie Benavides who helped us out in the rain.  Also a huge thanks to the Lindenbergs for the much-needed donuts and hot chocolate!

We are up for a challenge when we take on Loomis away on Wednesday.

Taft Saves: Katherine Gahagan (4)

Taft played an outstanding game today up at Berkshire on a cold and damp spring day.  As you can see from the scoring summary, 9 different girls from Taft scored today which is a testament to the strength of our offense.  However, Berkshire only scored 4 times which is clearly a testament to our defense.  In practice, we have not been successful with quick stick shots but we have been practicing them to get better and it paid off today as we had two beautiful quick stick goals.  The first came when Mimi Dobelle gave Kasey Pietro a perfectly placed pass which enabled Kasey to score on the quick stick and then Cassidy Lowther also gave Ali Tucci a well placed pass for our second quick stick goal of the game.  We got on the board within the first 30 seconds of the game as Sophie quickly and easily found the back of the net and then in rapid succession Kasey, Rachel and Ali scored.  Annelies earned goal number 5 when after her first shot was saved she quickly picked up the rebound on the ground and shot again, Annelies would not be deterred.

We just elected captains and Ali Tucci, Emma Stein and Annelies all showed excellent leadership abilities today.  Ali led the attack and helped set up some of our very successful plays that we just learned this week. Emma anchored our defense and Annelies played with tremendous enthusiasm throughout the entire game.  Margot Daiber had an excellent game that including scoring and making very effective cuts.  Mimi Dobelle also played very well and had a number of great ground balls and she had the assist on Kasey’s quick stick goal.  Gwen McGee and Issy Stack both stepped up to play in the center of the field, which is the most challenging position.  One of the best goals of the game was Issy Tabah’s.  As a lefty she is a bit tricky so she faked right and shot left and it was a perfect set-up as the goalie was also a leftie.

Other great plays included Kelley Gaston’s interception when she came out of nowhere to steal a pass from Berkshire and Gwen McGee’s perfectly executed check and ground ball pick-up.  We also did a fantastic job of double teaming the ball in the midfield.  Claire Allen has also improved significantly and is playing with real confidence.  Overall it was an outstanding team effort.

The Taft girl’s JV got off to a great start with a great win over Kingswood.  The first goal came from lower-mid Rachel Muskin who with 7 goals had a fantastic game.  She played center and was effective on defense and on offense.  The team passed very well and played incredibly effective settled defense.  Katherine did not face many shots because of the defense, but she did make 6 saves including an awesome save where she had to lunge to the right with one-minute left on the clock.  Ali Tucci was also a huge contributor to the team.  She scored three beautiful goals and was a leader on the field.  Our ninth graders were a highlight of the game.  Gwen McGee, Issy Tabah, Issy Stack all had outstanding games and really anchored our defense.  We also had excellent leadership on defense with our veterans Clair Beltran and Emma Stein.  Our veteran attackers, Annalies Van Breen and Casey Pietro were consistent and dependable throughout the game.  And brand new to the game were Georgia Bermingham and Kelley Gaston who are picking up the game very quickly.  Everyone on the team contributed to our win today and we are excited about how well we have started our season.

12-11 W

What a way to finish the season!  Taft JV girls saved the best game last.  Two evenly matched teams, the play was back and forth. Despite Taft being focused, fired up, and determined, Hopkins was able to capitalize first.  For most of the game, Taft was playing catch up.  Hopkins would score two goals in a row, Taft would score one, Hopkins would answer right back.  Taft was able to persevere.  No one ever stopped working or believing that the team could do it.  It was a TEAM victory.  Emma Stein, as she has been all season, was rock solid on defense, denying Hopkins’ attacker after attacker a shot on the goal.  Kasey Pietro and Story Viebranz were a throne in the side of the Hopkins’ goalie, both scoring four goals apiece.  Kasey’s confidence going to goal and Story’s poise in the attack were assets in Taft’s victory.  Meredith Barrow and Claire Allen both contributed to the success of Taft’s settled attack.   Despite the rhino’s efforts and four excellent saves by Kate Standish in net, Hopkins was leading 8-6 at halftime.

Taft’s team refocused and again went out to start the second half with confidence and a desire to make it the best half of lacrosse yet.  Again, it was Hopkins that scored three unanswered goals making it 11-7.  Slowly, Taft began to chip away, never panicking.  Annelies van Breen, whose accurate shot has helped the rhinos all season, came up big with a beautiful goal to close the gap to 11-8.  As important as it was for Taft to continue the pressure on attack, it was even more important to continue to dominate the defensive zone.  Clair Beltran came up big with two interceptions and four ground balls!  Both Lauren Bly and Erin McHugh were true team players, playing low attack and low defense.  McHugh and Bly’s presence on and off the field inspired and encouraged their teammates that Taft is the better team.  The gap crept closer.  Jackie Michnoff was asked to step out of her comfort zone and play a position that she hadn’t been playing all year.  She rose to the occasion, and showed the team what smart lacrosse looked like.  She was able to control the draws, play tough defense, and she was a threat on offense.  Sara Bermingham was invaluable in the midfield, snagging eleven groundballs!  Bermingham forced turnovers and created offensive opportunities that contributed to the success of the team today.  With thirty-two seconds left in the game, the game tied, junior captain, Alexandra Tweedley pulled through big time.  She skillfully dodged two girls before she was able to find the back of the net with the game winner.  However, there was one more draw and Taft needed to come up with the ball.  Hopkins won the draw and was able to get a great shot off.  Katharine Gahagan was able to step to the ball and snag the ball heading directly for the top left.  The game ended with Taft on top 12-11!

A vs Westminster School
3-12 L

Taft travelled to Westminster on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Martlets.  They were a fast and skilled team, and from the opening draw Taft knew it would be a battle.  The rhinos played hard, hustled, and were able to create some great scoring opportunities in the first half.  However, the Martlet’s goalie was able to deny the rhinos time and time again.  The Martlets found the back of the net first and built off their momentum for the remainder of the first half, ending at 5-2 in favor of Westminster.  Despite Taft’s tough defense, the Martlets were able to find the back of the net seven times in the second half.  Taft should hold their heads high, as they never gave up, continued earning scoring opportunities, and were able to capitalize three times.  Scoring came from Story Viebranz (2) and Annelies Van Breen.

H vs Miss Porter's School
8-1 W

Taft came out on Monday afternoon focused and ready to compete.  The rhinos learned from their defensive mistakes in Saturday’s game against Deerfield and played 50 solid minutes of lacrosse.  Taft opened up scoring 2 minutes into the game when Ali Tucci cut through the eight meter and received a beautiful pass from Story Viebranz.  Throughout the first half Taft applied pressure on the Porter’s defense and goalie.  The attack, led by Kasey Pietro, Lauren Bly, and Annelies Van Breen were able to play settled and confident lacrosse.  Continuing to work hard in the midfield, Sara Bermingham won the hover award, snagging the team’s high of nine groundballs on the day.  Emma Stein continued to be a force on defense for the rhinos.  Taft ended the first half leading 5-0 with Katherine Gahagan earning a shut out!

Taft was determined to keep the intensity and effort up in the second half.  Wining seven of the nine draw controls; Taft was able to protect their lead. Jackie Michnoff  was again invaluable in the midfield, making the smart passes, winning the groundballs, supporting all her teammate,  and being a threat on both attack and defense.  Taft finished the game winning 8-1.

A vs Deerfield Academy
6-16 L

H vs Loomis Chaffee School
3-8 L

The Loomis Chaffee Pelicans travelled to Taft today for what promised to be an exciting game.  The Pelicans were a strong and athletic team, and they were able to capitalize with the first goal of the game coming 1 minute and 37 seconds into the game.  Taft worked hard to keep up the Loomis.  The pelicans were quick to double-team the rhinos in the midfield, which forced numerous turnovers.  It took Taft a while to settle down and play their game.  Loomis’s goalie made some great saves, and Taft learned they needed to be more deliberate with their shots.  The first half ended with Taft trailing 1-4.  During the second half Loomis was able to sustain their pressure, and while Taft continued to work hard, get shots, and play excellent defense, they weren’t able to take the lead.  Taft had a great last two minutes of the game, controlling the ball and keeping it in Loomis’s defensive zone.  Story Viebranz scored the rhino’s second goal with 1 minute and fifty-four seconds left in the game.  Annelies van Breen made a beautiful catch, ran around her defender to the outside and perfectly placed the ball in the net with six seconds left.  Loomis was able to end on top, 8-3.

Taft will travel to Deerfield Saturday for their next game.

A vs Ethel Walker School
15-3 W

On a beautiful spring day, the girls JV lacrosse travelled to Simsbury to take on Ethel Walker.  The rhinos got off to a slow start allowing Ethel Walker to use their field to their advantage.  Controlling the draw and coming up with ground balls, Ethel Walker was able to control the first 2 minutes of the game and scored the first goal.  The Rhinos answered back forty seconds later with a goal from attacker Annelies van Breen.  Taft quickly picked up their effort and they were determined to come out on top.  The first half ended 7-3 in Taft’s favor. Lauren McDermott started off scoring in the second half for the rhinos.  Kasey Pietro had a standout second half, scoring three goals, which made five for the day!  The final score was 15-3.

Lauren McDermott had an excellent offensive game, always supporting her teammates and patiently waiting for her perfect shot.  Ali Tucci’s hard work and determination allowed her to snag 7 groundballs and led the midfield. Annelies van Breen continued to help the rhinos with their transition and was a threat to the Ethel Walker’s goalie.  Katharine Gahagan selflessly volunteered to shed her goalie equipment and help the team out in the field.  She picked up 5 groundballs and gave the rhinos speed in the midfield.  Kate Standish was a standout in net; allowing only 3 goals and a shut out in the second half!

Goals came from: Kasey Pietro (5), Annelies van Breen (4), Story Viebranz (2) Alexandra Tweedley (2), Lauren McDermott, Ali Tucci

The rhinos will take on the Loomis Chaffee Pelicans Wednesday at 4:15 on the turf.

Taft’s junior varsity team earned its first win of the season with a 12-5 victory over the Berkshire Bears.   The Bears came out focused and were able to find the net firsts.  However, Annelies Van Breen received a beautiful pass from Story Viebranz and she confidently placed the ball in the upper left corner to put the rhinos on the board.   Throughout the first half, Taft offense moved the ball around, making sure to utilize each player on the team.  The scoreboard read: 7-1 at the end of the first half with five different Taft girls scoring (Annelies Van Breen, Story Viebranz, Alexandra Tweedley, Kasey Pietro, and Sara Bermingham).   Taft was able to control five of the 6 draws in the first half.  Katharine Gahagan had a great first half in net, letting in only one goal.  The Rhinos returned to the field in the second half with confidence, and they were determined to control the ball.  Jackie Michnoff and Emma Stein were standouts on defense.  Story Viebranz and Sara Bermingham’s endurance and work ethics led the midfield, and kept the entire team energized on the 85 degree day, and Alexandra Tweedley and Lauren Bly’s composure on attack aided in the Rhino’s victory. Second half scoring included goals from Pietro, Viebranz, and Bermingham.  Kate Standish was excellent in goal in the second half, coming up with two big saves in the last two minutes of the game.  The girls will travel to Ethel Walker School on Saturday for a 3:00 game.

The JV Girls' Lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker to a strong Loomis team today, 4-3.  The Taft girls played their best game of the season yet, though, and had much to be proud of as they left the field.

Initially the Rhinos had their coaches on edge, as the Pelicans zoomed down field after the draw and created a numbers-up situation (3 v. 0) for Taft goalie Deanna Kim. The Loomis shot went wide, and the Rhinos were able to regroup and begin one of their many lovely passing series up-field.  The Rhinos scored first on a slightly off-angle goal by Sarah Holmes (assist to Maegan Olmstead); the Pelicans answered back a minute and a half later when one of their players had a similarly awkward shot.  The first half would end tied at 1, with the Rhinos having had a few more chances to score.  We played really smart lacrosse in this half, as we marked Loomis tightly through the midfield and inside the 8 meter; the attack was patient and worked well with the midfield to create opportunities.

In the second half, we came out strong, and Caroline O'Neill found the back of the cage after some hard work by Taylor Majewski (credited with the assist) inside the twelve meter. Taylor "took care of the ball" before feeding it to Caroline who fired it in.  The third goal of the game was again from Sarah Holmes, who after several nice cuts and some smart movement in the midfield managed to beat two defenders and the Loomis goalie (assist to Lillie Belle Viebranz).

Defensively, Deanna made several key saves to keep us in the game late in the second half when we were tied at 3 apiece (Loomis took advantage of two small lapses to tie it up with four minutes remaining).  The Taft girls were tough and smart until there were 40 seconds remaining; Loomis capitalized on a series of Taft mistakes and managed one more goal.  Despite a strong effort on Taft's part, we couldn't get the goal back, and the seconds ticked away with the game ending at 4-3, Loomis.

Caitlin Majewski continued to be a force on the low defense, as she stripped several Loomis girls of the ball when they were least suspecting her to; Steph Manley played "big" in the 8, and vacuumed up numerous ground balls before transitioning the ball up to her teammates.  Elsie Widing was a force, too, and was a huge help to the midfielders when the speedy Loomis attackers ran "Pelican".  Lillie Belle and Caroline were aggressive and persistent all over the field; Sara Bermingham, in only her third lacrosse game ever, shut down her player and forced numerous turnovers. Maegan Olmstead, Sarah Holmes, Mimi Dobelle, and Taylor demonstrated terrific awareness of timing and space, while Alison Johnston, Gabby Michnoff, and Lauren Bly were attentive and quick in the midfield.

We couldn't be more proud of these girls and the effort that they put in today.  In the future, if they play this well and with this much energy, they're sure to find success.  Next up: Deerfield, at home on Saturday at 3.

A vs Berkshire School
12-3 W
Despite the chilly day and a very quick warmup, the JV Girls' lacrosse team got off to a great start as they opened their season on Wednesday with a convincing win over Berkshire 12-3.

Nine different players contributed to the team's scoring, with Lillie Belle Viebranz, Story Viebranz, Alexandra Tweedley, Maegan Olmstead, Alison Johnston, and Sarah Holmes each scoring one; Caroline O'Neill and Gabby Michnoff each scored two, and Mimi Dobelle lead the team with three.  Lille Belle also had three assists; Olmstead and Michnoff had one each.

In goal, Story Viebranz had a terrific save to shut out the Bears for the first 25 minutes of play; Deanna Kim made two stellar saves in her second-half debut in goal (having played for a total of only three practices before the game).  Also having a great defensive day was the stellar trio of Caitlin Majewski (who lead the team in ground ball pickups), Steph Manley, and Elsie Widing.  Helping out was Courtney Testani, who played strong man-to-man defense through the midfield and made it difficult for Berkshire to effectively transition the ball.

The Rhinos look forward to their home opener on Saturday vs. Ethel Walker at 2PM.

The JV lax team won a hard fought battle at Choate today 11-9. We played some of our best lacrosse for the first 40 minutes but fell apart in the remaining 10 minutes and it almost cost us the game. We ended the first half with a 6-goal lead and a score of 9-3. Caroline ONeill had 4 first-half goals (giving her 5 total), Claire Queally and Caroline Castellano each had 2, and Taylor Majewski had 1 (with 2 goals total). Julie Foote, Biz Brauer, Elsie Widing and Hailey Karcher did a tremendous job at defense forcing turnovers and taking advantage of rebound opportunities. Grace Kalnins did an excellent job in goal, especially in her efforts to make long clears. Our transition passing in the midfield looked pristine on many occasions, with midfielders Ellie ONeill, Claire Queally, Molly Landis, Alison Johnston, Kelly Quirk and Tess DeRoy working hard to take care of the ball and make smart passes. While we only scored two second-half goals, we continued to dominate the draw controls and ground balls for the majority of the half. Starting at the 12-minute mark, however, we allowed Choate to go on a 6-goal unanswered scoring drive and thus making our lead uncomfortably small. We worked hard, however, to settle the ball on attack and take some time off the clock. LillieBelle Viebranz and Stephanie Manley did a great job maintaining possession during this period. While we did not end on a high note, we still came out with the W and are looking forward to ending the season with a well-played game against Hopkins.

We played one of our best games of the season against Kent today, earning a 16-9 win. It was a close game throughout and we never felt comfortable with our lead because Kent had numerous scoring spurts in which they scored 2 or 3 goals immediately off of consecutive draws. Transition and draw control dictated the game. While we lost the first few draws, centers Caroline Castellano and Ellie ONeill, along with midfielders Claire Queally Tess DeRoy, and Molly Landis were able to help put momentum on our side by winning more draw controls and forcing turnovers in the midfield. Once we got the ball in our attacking end, we were dominant. Lillie Belle Viebranz, Taylor Majewski, Caroline ONeill, Ellie ONeill, Claire Queally and Caroline Castellano all notched goals. Our defense did an awesome job stopping Kents strong, powerful center and goalie Grace Kalnins had 8 amazing saves followed by even better clears. It was a great day for JV lax!

Westminster beat us to the ball in the midfield despite and forced turnovers in our offensive end. While our midfield passing was great, we did not capitalize on our speed to win ground balls. While we played significantly better in the second half, there was not enough time to make up for the mistakes we had made. We will continue to work on groundballs in practice, as well as focus more on fitness. Goals: Caroline Castellano (2), Caroline ONeill, Taylor Majewski, LillieBelle Viebranz

The JV girls improved their record to 2-0 with a 16-0 win over Kingswood-Oxford. Caroline Castellano started off the scoring just three minutes into the game. She and Ellie O?Neil were the unsung heroes of the game, dominating on defense and controlling the midfield. Steph Manley, Taylor Majewski and Caroline O?Neil all had multiple goals in the first half, helping us to a 10-0 lead at halftime. During the second half, many of the girls played positions they were unfamiliar with. Defenders Julie Foote and Biz Brauer both played attack and Claire Queally did a great job at defense. The teamed worked on their left hands and their settle offense throughout the game and Caroline O?Neil notched a lefty goal. After this solid win, we will now need focus our attention to Loomis on Wednesday. Go Big Red!

The Taft JV girl?s lacrosse team began the season on a strong note by earning a solid 15-5 win over Berkshire School. We had trouble finding the back of the net during the first 10 minutes due to a talented Berkshire goalie. Once our offense began to place their shots better, however, we scored seven goals in the remaining 15 minutes to make the score 7-2 at halftime. Caroline Castellano and Ellie O?Neil both did a great job playing center, but it was clear that the team needs to work on draw controls. Our success in transition play continued in the second half and our offense began to settle the ball more. Biz Brauer, Bailey Fowlkes, Elsie Widing and Hailey Karcher anchored our defense along with goalie Grace Kalnins. Seven different players scored goals ? Ellie O?Neil, Stephanie Manley, Claire Queally, Caroline O?Neil, Caroline Castellano, LillieBelle Viebranz and Taylor Majewski. We had wonderful, sunny weather and it was a great day to kick off our season! We are looking forward to facing Kingswood Oxford next Saturday.

The Taft JV team finished its season with a sound win over Hopkins. Offensively, Chelsea Ross, Emily Gumblevich, Taylor Gorham and Diana Saverin put in outstanding efforts. Chelsea tallied seven goals in this final game, which brings her total goals for the season to an amazing 67, more than 5.6 goals per game! Five of today's seven goals were due to the inspired and self-less play of Diana Saverin, with the highlight being her pass to Chelsea on the fabled 100 play which resulted in the final goal of the season! Emily Gumblevich and Taylor Gorham were flawless in the midfield. Their draw control, groundball conversions and convincing fakes led them to four and two goals respectively, with one of Emilys coming off a lefty shot! Additionally, Carrie Hojnicki, Kelsey Lloyd, Gabby Masucci, Felicia Desorcie and Hope Gimbel were an important part of the transition game from defense to offense. Often the unsung heroes of the game, these midfielders and homes ran for miles in order to make strong cuts for the ball. Though the defense was relatively unchallenged Charlotte Luckey, Lauren Chapelle, Julie Foote and Biz Brauer worked together seamlessly to thwart any form of Hopkins advance. Their communication, speed and tenacity on converting turnovers left Hopkins with only four shots for the entire game. Goalies Sarah Linhares and Caitlin OHalloran each recorded one save for the game and were instrumental in the coordination of the defense. Sadly, the team was missing one player from todays final game, Elyse Brey. Out due to illness, her aggressive defense, as well as her unfailing enthusiasm was greatly missed! Though the final record stands at 5-6-1, this season was certainly an overall victory. With four contests having been decided by either a one or two goal margin, often in the concluding moments of the game, it is clear that this JV squad was out to compete. The coaches would like to thank the players, as well as their parents, for their devotion to the team. Go Big Red!

With stormy skies above the Wild Boars of Choate and the Rhinos of Taft hoped they would be able to play their entire game before the deluge began. Though it took the Rhinos a good ten minutes to get into game mode the team was able to correct their own mistakes and deliver a solid win. Scoring came from a variety of players including six goals from Chelsea Ross, five goals from Diana Saverin, two goals from Charlotte Luckey and one a piece from Carrie Hojnicki and Gabby Masucci. Assists came from Hope Gimble, Felicia Desorcie, Kelsey Lloyd and Emily Gumblevich. Defenders Lauren Chapelle, Elyse Brey, Biz Brauer and Julie Foote were incredibly effective in stopping the Choate attack and converting turnovers. And last but not least, goalies Caitlin OHalloran and Sarah Linhares contributed three and five saves, respectively, to this excellent effort. It is with sad hearts that the Rhinos begin preparations for their final game of the season next Wednesday at Hopkins. Go Big Red!

H vs Hotchkiss School
9-11 L
In what is always the most anticipated game of the season the Taft Rhinos faced off against the Hotchkiss Bearcats on this beautiful spring day. From the opening draw, it was clear that these two teams were well matched in terms of skill, speed and heart.Though the Rhinos appeared a bit nervous in the first five minutes of play, it did not take them long to realize that they could go head to head with the very tall and very talented Hotchkiss squad. As usual, draw control, groundball possession and smart shots became the focus of the game. Midfielders Charlotte Luckey, Felicia Desorcie, Emily Gumblevich and Gabby Masucci worked diligently to achieve possession and convert the ball to the waiting attack. In the face of a very aggressive Bearcat defense, Gabby Masucci, Chelsea Ross and Diana Saverin found their way to the goal. With the score standing at three all at the half, the Rhinos knew they would need to take it to the next level in order to earn the W. In the second half, defenders Biz Brauer, Elyse Brey, Julie Foote and Lauren Chapelle worked hard to contain the Hotchkiss attack. This coupled with Sarah Linhares eight saves meant this game was going to come down to one thing, ball possession. With the score standing at 9-9 with just two minutes to go Hotchkiss was able to come up with two crucial draws that led to two fast break goals. Even with a few last minute attempts, the Rhinos came up just short in this exciting and well fought game.

A vs Convent of the Sacred Heart
10-10 T
The Taft Rhinos and the Sacred Heart Tigers played to a 10-10 tie on Sacred Hearts beautiful new dual turf fields. In a very evenly matched game, both teams displayed excellent fundamentals, as well as a few trick plays up their sleeves. The Taft squad was anchored by the stellar performances of goalies Caitlin OHalloran and Sarah Linhares. The keepers were ably supported by low defenders Elyse Brey and Lauren Chapelle. These young women were unstoppable when it came to their double teams and communication. In the midfield, Taylor Gorham, Gabby Masucci and Charlotte Luckey covered a tremendous amount of ground. Not only did they expedite the transition of the ball from the defense to the offense, they were also key players in the Rhino attack. Additionally, offensive midfielders Carrie Hojnicki, Emily Gumblevich and Diana Saverin used their speed, as well as their talent for catching the ball in tight situations, to push the Rhinos towards the Sacred Heart goal. Oddly enough, just two Taft players accounted for the ten goals scored. Chelsea Ross and Kelsey Lloyd tallied five a piece, with four goals coming off of draw possessions and three from Sacred Heart turnovers. Diana Saverin, Carrie Hojnicki and Gabby Masucci assisted the rest. Despite the lopsided scoring, this game was truly a team effort. It was too bad that there was not enough time to allow for an overtime period.

A vs Kent School
19-9 W
Under blue skies and the warm spring sun, the Rhinos tallied a convincing win over the Kent Lions. With goals coming from nine different players, as well as an eight goal game from Chelsea Ross, it was clear that the Taft sticks were warmed up and ready to go come game time. The Rhinos relied heavily on their fast break and one vs. one skills against the athletic Kent squad. Charlotte Luckey, Gabby Masucci, Felicia Desorcie and Diana Saverin showed great determination in controlling the draw, as did Chelsea Ross, Molly Landis and Hope Gimbel in their transition game to the offensive zone. Goalie Caitlin OHalloran made seven excellent saves, four of which came from point blank shots. All in all it was an excellent win headed into this weekend's contest versus Sacred Heart. Go Big Red!

H vs Greenwich Academy
12-13 L
The Rhinos lost a heartbreaker to Gators of Greenwich Academy. From the opening draw it was clear that this game was going to be an all out battle until the last whistle blew. The Taft midfield and defense were initially caught off guard by the tremendous speed of the Greenwich squad, but it did not take long for the engines of the speedier players--Kelsey Lloyd, Felicia Desorcie, Chelsea Ross, Lauren Chapelle and Charlotte Luckey--to get fired up. First half scoring came from a variety of players including Felicia Desorcie, Taylor Gorham, Carrie Hojnicki and Chelsea Ross. Taylor Gorham showed particular accuracy scoring three goals in just six minutes! At the other end of the field, goalie Sarah Linhares tallied six saves which helped the Rhinos head into halftime with the score standing at seven a piece. During the second half, the back and forth nature of the game continued. Diana Saverin kicked off the scoring for Taft and then continued to contribute by assisting three out of the four second half goals. Charlotte Luckey, Gabby Masucci and Emily Gumblevich worked feverously in the midfield to transition the ball from the defense to the offense. Defenders Biz Brauer, Elyse Brey and Julie Foote challenged the aggressive GA attack to come up with new and creative ways to score goals. Though GA was able to sneak in a goal in the last minute of the game to secure the victory, the JV squad put forth a tremendous effort in what was their most skillful game to date.

H vs Westminster School
6-8 L
The Rhinos squared off against the Martlets of Westminster School in their second game of the week. These two squads were extremely well matched which made for a very exciting and very close game. Throughout the first half draw control and the ability to slow down the transition game were crucial. The Taft midfield and defense did a super job marking up against the aggressive Westminster players, as well as forcing them to settle the ball on attack. Elyse Brey, Lauren Chapelle, Elizabeth Brauer, Julie Foote and Charlotte Luckey were at the top of their game and held the Martlets to just six shots in the first 25 minutes of play. At the other end of the field, the Rhino attack worked fastidiously to convert each possession into a goal. Felicia Desorcie opened the scoring with a beautiful crease roll. This was followed by two goals off of settled situations; Chelsea Ross scored off a feed from Charlotte Luckey and Diana Saverin off a pass from Emily Gumblevich. At the half, the score was 3-4 with Westminster ahead. From the opening seconds of the second half, it was clear that the next 25 minutes were going to be intense. Off a series of fast breaks, Westminster advanced to a three goal lead. This lead, however, would be short lived due to the tireless work of Gabby Masucci, Taylor Gorham, Kelsey Lloyd, Emily Gumblevich and Charlotte Luckey in the midfield. Coupled with Sarah Linhares stellar play in goal, she notched eight saves, it was clear the game would come down to the final minutes of play. Even though Chelsea Ross and Felicia Desorcie were able to collaborate for three more goals, time was not on the side of the Rhinos today. Despite the loss, the coaches are very proud of the sportsmanship and perseverance shown by this team today. Go Big Red!

A vs Miss Porter's School
12-2 W
The Rhinos traveled to Farmington this afternoon for a Tuesday game against the Daises of Miss Porters. Chelsea Ross got Taft off to a great start with a goal off the opening draw of the game. This was quickly followed by another scoring opportunity from Kelsey Lloyd who intercepted a clear from the Porters keeper and converted it into a goal. Throughout the game the Rhinos did an excellent job creating and capitalizing on turnovers. Subsequently, this allowed goals to come from a variety of players in both the high attack and midfield. Two of the prettiest goals of the game came off of settled attack situations. Chelsea Ross received a beautiful crossing pass from Charlotte Luckey and then launched a scorching low shot. Just a few minutes later, Emily Gumblevich made a very smart pass to Felicia Desorcie who fired a high shot off a fake. Outside of the offensive zone, the Rhinos worked hard in the midfield to press the Daises with double teams. Diana Saverin, Carrie Hojnicki, Gabby Masucci, Felicia Desorcie and Charlotte Luckey covered every inch of the field both offensively and defensively working to regain possession of the ball. In the low defense, Lauren Chapelle and Elyse Brey did an excellent job containing the Porters attack, as well as collecting groundballs. Goalie Sarah Linhares recorded eight saves off of ten shots, as well as two interceptions. Overall, it was a solid victory for the Rhinos, as well as great preparation for their next game against Westminster.

H vs Deerfield Academy
6-9 L
The Rhinos suffered a tough loss to the Big Green on this beautiful spring afternoon. Taft's play during the first half can best be described as flat. The attack was unable to convert its possessions into goals and the defense had a tough time containing the agile Deerfield offense. Goalie Caitlin OHalloran should be credited for keeping the Rhinos in the game. Her six saves were hard fought and kept Deerfield from gaining too much momentum. At half time the score stood 1-6 in Deerfield's favor. The Rhinos had their work cut out for them in the second half, a position that had become all too familiar over the past few weeks. Off the opening draw of the second period Charlotte Luckey made an excellent pass to Chelsea Ross whose shot was just barely saved by the Deerfield keeper. On the ensuing clear, the Deerfield defense dropped the ball which was then retrieved by Chelsea who converted it into a goal. This smart play set the tone for the remaining twenty minutes of the game. Emily Gumblevich and Diana Saverin soon followed suit. Emily retrieved a groundball off a Deerfield turnover which Diana converted into beautiful goal off a fake and a high shot. After these two goals, Deerfield tried in earnest to regain command of the game, but the Rhinos were unwilling to relinquish control. Felicia Desorcie's strong midfield skills resulted in two more goals by Chelsea, bringing Taft within four of Deerfield. By far the most exciting goal of the game came from lower mid, Caroline Castellano, off a pass from Gabby Masucci and a fast break from the 50 yard line. Goalie Sarah Linhares, with the help of defenders Julie Foote, Elyse Brey, Elizabeth Brauer and Lauren Chapelle, was able to thwart the many Deerfield attempts to score. Sarah finished the game with six saves. Though they came up short, the Rhinos learned a crucial lesson about the importance of utilizing all 50 minutes of the game. The players are looking forward to their next game against Miss Porters on Tuesday. Go Big Red!

A vs Loomis Chaffee
9-13 L
The Rhinos faced the Pelicans on the Loomis turf after many days of rain and cold had made outdoor play impossible. Taft was ready for what they knew would be a talented and formidable Loomis squad. The first half of play was very competitive. Both Loomis and Taft came out strong having multiple scoring opportunities in the opening minutes of the game. Loomis was on the board first, but Chelsea Ross soon answered off a series of pretty passes from Charlotte Luckey and Emily Gumbelvich. Taft and Loomis battled for control of the draw with Felicia Desorcie playing a crucial role for the Rhinos. Her tenacious groundball skills were converted into two more goals for Chelsea Ross. Loomis, however, was able to gain the upper hand through a series of fast break goals that overwhelmed the Taft defense. The score headed into half-time was 3-8 in favor of Loomis. During the second half, the Rhinos made a strong push to overtake the Pelicans. The entire team, from the goalie to the homes, focused on minimizing turnover, converting each possession into a goal and playing smart lacrosse. Sarah Linhares was an imposing presence in the cage, making fourteen saves total, with nine in the second half. Lauren Chapelle, Gabby Masucci and Charlotte Luckey shined in the midfield, using their speed to move the ball from the defense to the attack. Kelsey Lloyd, Carrie Hojnicki, Taylor Gorham, Diana Saverin and Chelsea Ross converted the hard work of the midfielders into a variety of opportunities to score. During the second half Taft scored six goals to Loomis' five. Unfortunately, it was not enough to take the lead. The Rhinos are looking forward to sunnier skies and a chance to prove their talents against Deerfield on Saturday.

H vs Greenwich YL
13-14 L
The Rhinos came up just short in an exciting game against a talent Greenwich Youth League squad. The two teams were very evenly matched which made for a neck-in-neck game with the score staying relatively even throughout the first half. The terrific trio of homes, Chelsea Ross, Diana Saverin and Hope Gimbel, accounted for all of the scoring in the first 25 minutes. Through a combination of fast break goals, free position shots and settled situations the score going into half time was 6-7 with GYL in the lead. At the start of the second half, however, GYL was able to pull ahead. For the first ten minutes of the period it seemed like GYL would be hard to stop. With the score now standing at 7-14 in favor of GYL, the Rhinos took a time out to collect themselves and prepare for the last fifteen minutes of the game. From the starting draw, however, GYL continued to dominate. Had it not been for a series of excellent plays by the midfielders, low defenders, and goalie, the Rhinos would have been hard pressed to mount a comeback. Goalie Sarah Linhares made three excellent saves which she then cleared to Elyse Brey, Elizabeth Brauer and Julie Foote who advanced the ball up the field resulting in goals from Taylor Gorham and Chelsea Ross. Due to this hard work Taft was able to edge the score to 9-14 with five minutes remaining in the game. During those last five minutes, the Rhinos really came to life. Working together in the midfield, Felicia Desorcie, Lauren Chapelle and Charlotte Luckey caused the GYL attack to turn over the ball several times. From a combination of interceptions, checks that resulted in groundball retrievals and draw control, Felicia, Charlotte and Lauren were able to then convert the ball to the attack resulting in a series of exciting goals. In a two minute time span the Rhinos scored four goals, with Chelsea Ross accounting for three and Diana Saverin for one. Unfortunately, time expired with Taft remaining one behind their competition. Congratulations to the squad for a hard fought effort!

H vs Kingswood-Oxford School
19-2 W
It was a beautiful day for the Girls' JV Lacrosse season opener. The sun made a rare appearance from behind the clouds and there was a not a drop of rain in sight. From the first whistle Taft's draw control and passing game were strong. This allowed the Rhinos to make a quick start against the Wyverns, tallying six goals in the first eight minutes of the game. Throughout the first and second periods scoring was divided amongst a variety of Taft players. Diana Saverin and Chelsea Ross, often working off of one another, each tallied six goals and four assists, midfielders Juliet Ourisman and Taylor Gorham each notched two goals, while Emily Gumbulevich, Carrie Hojnicki and Charlotte Luckey scored one a piece. Midfielders Lauren Chapelle, Felicia Desorcie and Gabby Masucci played a crucial role in preventing K-O from advancing the ball into the offensive end. Their tough defense and excellent transition game continually provided the attack with excellent scoring possibilities. Defensively Julie Foote, Elizabeth Brauer and Sarah Linhares thwarted all but two of Kingswood's scoring attempts. Their strong communication and control of the groundball game gave Taft a clear edge over their opponent. Overall, it was an excellent first outing for this exuberant group of young women!

H vs Hopkins School
15-8 W
The Taft J.V. Girls' Lacrosse team finished their season with a solid 15-8 victory over Hopkins on Wednesday. Taft started the game with a 5 goal streak, relying on precise midfield passing to convert the transition to a goal. Indeed, the girls connected in the midfield in the first few minutes with greater sustained accuracy than at any other point in the season. In addition, the offense played tenacious defense in our offensive end. Though the referees were calling the checks tightly, our offense's defensive pressure kept the ball away from our goal for most of the first half. The entire team focused on possession through ground balls, and it was Lauren Chapelle was led the intra-team competition in the category with six. Liesl Morris and Shatz Bromley weren't far behind, grabbing 4 each. Kristin Castellano led in scoring today with 6 goals, including on off of "The Wheel" while working with Liesl Morris and MJ Van Sant. Liesl also had 2 goals and 1 assist, and MJ found the net twice while adding four assists. Molly Brauer and Scout Berger also each added 2 goals.

A vs Hotchkiss School
20-7 L
Despite a fast, strong start with a goal from Kristin Castallano in the first minute, Taft suffered a tough loss against Choate earlier this week. After Castallano's initial goal, Choate went on a 6-point, unanswered run. The Rhinos couldn't seem to get the ball out of the defensive end for the first half, finishing the period with a score of 12-4. After making a few changes in the line-up, the Rhinos came out with renewed energy though, scoring an unanswered three goals in the first 6 minutes. Despite even play in the midfield, the Rhinos couldn't convert as Choate continuted to pull ahead to a 20-7 win. Sarah Linhares had an impressive 11 saves in the second half while Caitlin O'Halloran stopped three in the first period. Molly Brauer moved from her usual position at attack to try some midfield, and ended up winning 6 ground balls in her effort. Jess Chiulli was right behind her, scooping up 5. Goals were scored by Kristin Castallano (3 goals, one assist), Scout Berger (2 goals, 1 assist), and Jess Chiulli (1 goal). Taft will play their final game of the season on Wednesday at home.

A vs Choate Rosemary Hall
14-9 W
Taft achieved a 14-9 win over Choate Wednesday yesterday afternoon. Though the Rhino's scored steadily throughout the first half, concluding with period with 7 goals, they hadn't hit their stride. Raring to go, the Rhino charged out in the second half to score 5 goals in 7 minutes. The offense aggressively attacked one-on-ones and challenged in pairs to exploit double-teams. However, a lag in midfield defense enabled Choate to an unanswered 3-point run, giving out defensive players more action than they had seen during a defensively uneventful first half. Yet, defenders Juliet Ourismann, Shatz Bromley, and Lauren Chapelle managed to break up a few single runner fast-breaks, while defender Gabby Masucci grabbed a few interceptions throughout the game. Scout Berger lead the offense, converting 5 of her 6 shots, while adding an assist. Kristin Castellano contributed 4 goals and picked up 6 ground balls. MJ Van Sant tallied two goals, and Molly Brauer and Liesl Morris each added one. Morris also added 3 assists.

17-4 W
Going back to basics lead Taft Womens' J.V. Lacrosse team to a huge victory over Kent on Wednesday afternoon. Despite a few minutes of sloppy passing in the beginning of the game, Taft focused on tuning their left hand skills, passing, midfield cuts, and shot fakes to steadily work their way towards a 17-4 win. Tenacious defense in the offensive end by homes and attack wings allowed for a quiet game on the defensive end. Still, goalie Caitlin O'Halloran stopped 4 shots in the second half. Led by Kristin Castellano's 6 goals, Taft's attackers were also busy scoring goals. Molly Brauer, Scout Berger, MJ Van Sant, Jess Chiulli, and Taylor Gorham also added two goals a piece, with another one from Liesl Morris. Castellano controlled the midfield with Emily Gumbulevich as they each won 7 ground balls, while Morris grabbed another 5. Taft hosts Sacred Heart and Greenwich Youth League on Saturday in a 3-way Round Robin.

In Tafts J.V. Womens Lacrosse inaugural home game Loomis sneaked by Taft with a final score of 9-8. At half-time Taft trailed 4-2, but two quick goals by Scout Berger (2 goals) and Kristin Castellano (2 goals) set the Rhinos momentum for the second half. The teams traded goals throughout the second half. Despite a majority of draw controls, with Liesl Morris consistently pulling it back to Castellano, increased defensive pressure in the midfield, and a solid performance from Goalie Caitlin OHallaron, Taft couldnt hold off a few sneaky Loomis shooters down low. Offensively, M.J. Van Sant contributed two goals while Molly Brauer and Morris chipped in one apiece. Taft travels on Saturday to play Deerfield.
