Coach Biography: Steve Palmer
Head Coach, Boys' Cross Country
Steve Palmer came to Taft in the fall of 1985 and holds the honor of being only the 2nd head coach of the Boys Cross Country team at the school. He took over the coaching role from the legendary John Small who started the team in the 1950’s and coached until 1986. Steve grew up in Medfield, MA, running and playing hockey, and then earned his BA from Bowdoin College where he also ran cross country, indoor and outdoor track for four years, specializing in the triple jump and 400 meter hurdles in track. At Taft, Steve has also helped coach in the Girls’ hockey program and is presently the coach of the Boys Thirds Hockey Team. As head Boys Cross Country Coach, Steve’s teams have recorded many honors including several Founders League titles, five undefeated seasons, and two Individual New England Champions. In the spring as an assistant Track Coach, he works with sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers. Steve lives on campus with his wife Karla and two sons, Henry and Calvin. They spend their summers in NH restoring their 1834 home, hiking, running and enjoying the outdoors. Steve holds an M.A. from Middlebury College.
