Coach Biography: Greg Hawes

Greg Hawes ’85, returned to Taft in the Fall of 2001 with his wife Rachael and picked up where he left off fifteen years before. As a student at Taft, Greg Co-Captained the 1985 wrestling team and was the winner if the Hitch Award. He also was the WNEISWA Champion in 1985. After Taft Greg attended Dartmouth College where he was the Co-Founder of the Dartmouth Wrestling Club. While at Dartmouth Greg began his Rugby career and earned many accolades including First Team All American, All Eastern and All Ivy Teams. He also captained his Dartmouth squad in the 1989 season. Greg’s rugby career continued after college, playing for the Washington RFC where he earned All Eastern U-25 Team honors in 1990. After moving to Santa Monica, he played for the Santa Monica Rugby Club where he was voted Most Valuable Forward in the 1991 and 1992 season and MVP in the 1993 season. He finished up his playing days at the Old Blue Rugby Club in New York City where he earned All Northeastern Team honors in 1995. As a coach, Greg served one season, while he was an undergrad at Dartmouth as an Assistant coach at Taft. After graduating from Dartmouth, he served as the Head coach of the Potomac Junior High Wrestling Team. After moving to Blair Academy in 1994, Greg was fortunate to serve as the Assistant Coach of their wrestling team for 6 years. The Blair wrestling program was in the midst of a 25 year streak of winning the Prep School National Championships. During that run, Blair was never ranked below 12th in the nation among all high schools and three times earned a number one ranking. Also while at Blair, Greg served as a Spring Track coach. Since making the move to back to Taft, Greg has brought his wealth of experience to the wrestling program as an assistant coach. He also has supervised weight room activities and is currently helping out in the Outdoor Program. Greg lives in an on campus house with his wife Rachael Ryan and two boys Peyton and Lachlan. Greg teaches History.
