BOYS' CREW ROWS IN SMITH CUP

6/6/2005

The rain held off and the sun actually made an appearance during the final races of this year's Smith Cup Regatta, held at Lake Waramaug.

The fourth boat rowed well, but was out pulled by crews from Berkshire and the Gunnery. The third stayed just two or three seats behind the Gunnery for the first two thirds of their race, and appeared ready to strike at any minute, but Gunnery pulled away with a sprint in the last 400 meters, finishing 10 seconds ahead of Taft. In the second boat race, and for the second time this season, the race was essentially too close to call.

The crews from Taft and Gunnery were neck and neck for the entire 1500-meter course. The final stroke was taken by Gunnery, causing them to finish under half a second ahead of Taft. It was a barn-burner of a race. The first boat race was also quite exciting, with Gunnery pulling ahead of Taft of the start and Berkshire just behind. The boats essentially held those positions as they proceeded down the course.

In the end, Gunnery defeated Taft by 4 seconds, and Taft crossed the line 3 seconds ahead of Berkshire.
