The Taft basketball program enters the 2009-10
season looking to build on the strong finish of last year’s team. The 08-09
squad finished with an impressive five game winning streak to finish with a
13-9 record and qualified for post-season play for the fifth consecutive year.
Key victories in February against three playoff teams (Avon, Kent and Loomis)
highlighted a strong finish to the year and sent the Rhinos to the postseason.
Over the past five seasons the Taft team has compiled an 81-32 record and won
two Tri-State League championships. The 2009-10 team returns five letter
winners and will be led by co-captains Jared Jackson ’10 and Greg Nicol ’10.
Taft plays an attacking style of basketball, using an up-tempo fast break game
and an aggressive defensive system. “We rely on the multi-sport athlete who is
used to being in competitive situations”, commented assistant coach, Carl
Carlson. Over the past five years, Taft basketball players have gone on to
compete in college athletic programs at the following institutions: Amherst,
Bates, Brandeis, College of Charleston, Connecticut College, Cornell, Davidson,
Dartmouth, Holy Cross, Howard, Providence, St. Anselm’s, Trinity, Tufts, UMass,
Union, Washington and Lee, and Wesleyan.
