WATERTOWN, CT -
The JV ballclub earned its first home win on the season beating Kent 10-5 to improve their record to 3-2. The Rhinos were aggressive from the start of the game and the bats were alive today. Taft loaded the base in the first inning, but Kent turned a nice 1-2-3 double play to end the threat. Taft was not the be denied, however, and scored 6 runs in the second inning after sending 10 batters to the plate. Doug Goldstone '15, Coley Cannon '15 and Dan Sheehan '13 all recorded RBIs in the inning. Goldstone was fantastic on the mound - pitched 6 innings, allowing 2 runs and striking out 8 batters on the day. Cashen Keeler '16 and Andrew Colangelo '15 made some incredible defensive plays to back up Goldstone's strong effort. After scoring a few more runs in the 5th and 6th innings (Ege Ercan '16 earned his first ever hit and RBI, Jack Cannata went 2-4 scoring 2 runs on the day), Taft took a 10-2 lead into the final frame. We quickly learned that no lead is safe, and Kent battled back. Cam Carlson '16 too over for Goldstone and was throwing stikes, but Kent scored 3 runs on a combination of hits and errors. The drama was just beginning. Carlson '16 was on a pitch count and was facing his last batter of day. The bases were loaded and there were two outs. The count was 1-2. On the next pitch, the Kent batter put a good swing on the ball and sent a high sky fly ball to deep right field. Julian White '16 found his way to the ball, camped under it and made a miraculous snow cone catch to end the game! The Taft Rhinos were exuberant, relieved and very happy to escape with a win.
Next game at Choate on 4/19 @ 4:30! See you there!
