AVON, CT -

On a cold, windy "spring" afternoon, the JV Baseball team faced a strong Avon team in the first game of the season. Avon came out on top 9-1, but the squad had a lot of positives on the day. After holding the Winged Beavers scoreless in the first inning, Ryan Gagne '15 ran into some trouble with his location in the second inning. He was able to limit the damage to three runs as the Rhinos turned a nice 3-6 double play to end the threat. Doug Goldstone '15 (3 innings) Ryan Parcells '16 (1 inning) relieved Gagne and did not allow any big innings. The coaches were proud of our pitchers for getting out of some tough jams and stranding runners on base.

Offensively, the Rhinos scored one in the first after a monster double to centerfield by Goldstone, but were held scoreless the rest of the way. Avon's pitching staff was strong, and we didn't help ourselves by committing a few baserunning errors.  It was great to see live-action pitching for the first time all season, and work on getting our timing down at the plate. The squad talked about learning from our mistakes and getting better each practice and game. Overall, this opening game was a promising start to the season. We will look to hopefully gain our first win at Hotchkiss on Saturday!
