Varsity Field Hockey
vs Loomis Chaffee School
Score/Result: 1-0 W

Always one of the best games of our season, the contest against Loomis did not disappoint. This game is always intense and exciting as our two teams match up very well against each other. Loomis came out with intensity and dominated much of the first half. They had three corners, but our defense was able to break their corners each time even with their left handed player deceptively passing the ball to the left. Caroline Queally read that quickly and thwarted their attempt at a good shot. And again Karina Wohlheiter had an outstanding game in goal making 5 keys saves including a hard shot on a corner.
However, the second half was a different story. Taft came out on fire and we dominated the entire second half. While we did not have a single corner in the first half we earned 5 in the second half and the goal came on the very last corner of the game. Lauren Drakely was off the field and she is our usual inserter. The team adjusted and Audrey Quirk inserted the ball well, but the Loomis flyer was able to break up the play at the top of the circle. Rachael Alberti reacted very quickly and recovered the ball and sent it quickly to Caroline who was wide open. Caroline drew the goalie out of position and took her signature shot, which flew off her stick and crashed hard into the backboard of the goal. There were 8 and half minutes left and instead of panicking; we played even harder to hold onto this lead.
On the right side of the field Caroline and Issy Tabah were unbeatable. Issy was a brick wall as her tackles were perfectly timed and Caroline repeatedly got the ball back on our attack. Collins Grant, Laura Feidelson, Rachael, Gracie Lyman and Krystal Egbuchulam all were outstanding as they kept the offensive pressure on and worked together to move the ball and get the ball back when we lost it. Audrey Quirk held the center of the field for us and was often double and triple teamed yet never succumbed to the pressure. Gwen McGee was steady and consistent in the back and was especially strong in the first half when we faced a lot of pressure in the circle. Coco Tautkus made some key plays in those last 8 minutes that kept Loomis for getting a shot off. Hope Tierney and Sarah Laico gave us fresh legs in the first half when we really needed a lift.
This game easily could have gone the other way, but we were able to adjust our mental and physical game, which enabled us to work as a team and pull off a thrilling win.
As usual, Loomis was very gracious in defeat and both teams recognized the very high quality of the competition in a game well fought.
