Girls' Junior Varsity Lacrosse
vs Hopkins School
Score/Result: 13-11 L
Wednesday, May 22, 2013
On Wednesday, Taft played their final game of the season against Hopkins away. The girls played a strong game despite it being a game full of checking and ground ball battles. Megan Stone did a fantastic job keeping Hopkins attackers out of the middle and all of the defenders, also including Brooke Majewski, Jane Andresen, Sophia Dawn, did a great job sliding and collapsing when Hopkins attackers made rushes to net. Paige Whittemore had two goals in the first half. Amelia Bermingham had two as well, Elle Carroll assisted one of which Amelia made a beautiful over the shoulder reception. Elle Caroll scored the final goal of the half. Taft went into halftime 5-5 with a clean slate going into the second half.
In the second half, Taft began to take care of the details. The Taft JV Lax team started making better transition passes in the midfield, being more patient on attack, and playing better Taft lacrosse. Midfielders Lexi Long, Adeline Ewing, Paige Whittemore, Colleen Iannone, Hope Tierney, and Maggie Lineberger helped center Elle Carroll and Taft was more successful in draw control in the second half as well. Tierney, Iannone, and Ewing made big ground ball pick-ups and Lineberger and Long made big steps off of the circle when the draw would go up. Simmons Gaines, Sophie Nickoll, Meme Ewald, and Emily Rominger all contributed to the offensive transition by cutting deep and opening up options as they cut back to their teammates. Lexi Long scored one of the goals in the second half off of an assist from Amelia Bermingham. Amelia also scored a goal through careful placement of her shot assisted by Elle Caroll. Elle Carroll and Paige Whittemore each had two goals in the second half of the game. Despite digging in to fight hard in the final minutes of the game, Taft lost with a close final score of 13-11 as Hopkins managed to stall out some of the final minutes.
Goaltender Maggie Blatz played consistently well throughout the season, making big contributions in each contest. Against Hopkins, Blatz continued to show strength in stopping direct shots and making strong clears to her teammates. Despite the score, the JV Lax team should be proud of their performance in this game and their work throughout the season.
