Boys' Thirds Soccer
vs Trinity-Pawling School
Score/Result: 4-4 T
Wednesday, November 06, 2013
Today the Taft Boys Thirds soccer team traveled to New York state to play our good friends at T-P on an overcast but fairly warm day. Our lads well demonstrated the effects of the 75 minute ride (traffic) by playing somnolent and ineffective soccer for the first twenty minutes of the match. This continued until T-P scored on a breakaway and woke our boys up to play with a little more vigor. At the 25 minute mark, Noah Baird chucked a long throw into the T-P box that found Leon Vortmeyer for an easy tap in. Next Cole Johnson scored a very nice left-footed goal off assisting from Phil Holt (with his head) and Garrett Guiney. Finally, Ege Ercan buried a PK low and left to bring the score to three-one when the half time whistle blew.
We changed sides to give T-P the wind advantage and this might have been a factor in the next goal as a long T-P throw was headed into our goal by one of our own players, ouch! However, Taft answered soon after to bring the score to a comfortable 4-2 as James Lee assisted Kelvin Xu for an easy shot from within the six yard box. Unfortunately, T-P really brought the wolves at this point as this was their last match of the year so What the Heck! T-P again scored on a breakaway at the 23 minute mark. Both teams then battled for quite some time and I believed that we were going to sneak away with a 4-3 win. Unfortunately we could not effectively clear the ball from our end for any long period of time. This then lead to two free kicks for T-P from about 30 yards in front of our goal. The first shot was saved by Luke Willson while the second was not. Luke went up and controlled the ball but was then impacted by a T-P player who jarred the ball loose and into our goal in the last minute of the match. I asked the referee about this play after the match and he believed that Luke had not fully controlled the ball and therefore the ball was in play for any player on the pitch. In any other situation any contact between a player and a goalkeeper usually results in a foul given but I guess not at T-P in the last minute of the last match of the year to give both teams a tasteless tie. Oh well. We'll come out strong on Saturday for our last match of our season against Hotchkiss. We hope to see you there!
