Boys' Fourths Soccer
vs Westminster School
Score/Result: 4-0 W
Wednesday, October 03, 2012—
The Quad Squad traveled to Westminster on Wednesday to put their undefeated record up against a tough Westminster team. Last year the sqaud pulled out a 2-1 win, and we expected another tight and hard fought contest. On a dreary afternoon and after a long bus ride, it would have to been easy to start the game flat. However, after a rousing chant from game captain Kevin Klempner the squad was fired up.
The Rhinos maintained possession for much of the first half and Courtland Boyle scored the first goal off a beautiful free kick. The ball landed in the upper right corner of the goal just over the outstretched hands of the goalie. We continued strong attacking soccer and possibly played the best soccer all season towards the end of the first half. Tommy MacMullen made many nice crosses from the left side of the field and Evan Lehner finally buried one just as the first half expired. After 40 minutes the score was 2-0 in favor of the Quad Squad.
The Marlets pushed the tempo to begin the second half and tested our defense and goalkeeping. The back four of Andrew Colangelo, Tristan Chaix, Phil Holt and Michael Molder continually made strong defenseive stops in key situations. Conlangelo had a nice head ball near the goal to stop one rally. With about 20 minutes left in the game Klemper pressured the keeper on a defensive pass back, stole the ball and drilled it in the back of the net. Up 3-0 the Rhinos played a little more relaxed and made many crisp passes to maintain possession. Klempner finished the scoring off a free kick from Michael Molder near the end of the second half. The final score was 4-0.
The was truly a team victory. Playing on the largest field all season, substitutions were more often and the coaches asked the players for quick bursts of energy. All 19 players left it all out on the pitch and played the aggressive soccer we needed to win. Will Meeker stopped a low liner in the final minutes to preserve the clean sheet. He saw the most shots all season and rose to the occasion. The Quad Squad is next in action at Avon on Saturday October 13th. Until then we will be praticing how to stay onsides.
