Girls' Varsity Soccer
vs Kent School
Score/Result: 3-0 W
Saturday, October 26, 2013
The Taft Girls' Varsity Soccer team hosted Kent on Parents' Day on Saturday. The Big Red were looking for their first result in three games. Despite playing well enough in past games to win, Taft had not managed to be able to put the ball away on prime scoring opportunities in the past. This was not the case on Saturday. Co-Captain Taylor Rado '14 showed her offensive prowess, scoring two first-half goals that put the game out of reach from the visitors.
With a hefty wind at their backs in the first, Taft was able to control the play. They passed well to feet and found a lot of space on the wings of the pitch. Cecilia Sousa '16, Steph Houghton '16, Illy Smith '15, and Catherine Kahler '15 were rewarded for their runs on the outside and Taft was able to find new areas to attack on the wing over the course of the game. Strikers Rado, Kyra Thomas '17, and Sam Lamy '14 were more creative on the day than at any other point of the year. They made the runs to support as well as extend the Kent defense and did follow predictable patters which opened up a lot of the center of the field. Co-Captain Rachel Muskin '14, Peyton Swift '15, Riley Bragg '17, and Anjali Thakor '15 controlled the center of the field and proving more and more adept at being able to string together the whole field, not just wing to wing, with their play in the center.
Taft was able to score two first half goals off Rado's feet. The second was one of the prettiest goals the Big Red have had all year. Building from the back and out to the wing, Taft moved the ball with all one or two-touch passes. Eventually a through ball was played to Smith on a run to the corner. With a deft left-footed cross, Smith sent a low ball to the near post. Rado came in screaming from a far post position, beat her mark to the near post, and expertly finished the ball near post (no easy task since she was beyond the near post on her run). Rado's second goal came with four seconds on the clock in the first half. The second half went much the same as the first, with Taft having more possession of the ball and quality scoring chances. Kent was able to counterattack a few times, but Madie Leidt '16 and the defensive line held strong and the clean sheet. Thomas scored a goal off an unbelievable individual effort. She stole the ball from a Kent defender and dribbled around four players from a back-to-goal position and struck a lefty ball far post. Taft's third goal would conclude the day's scoring. Katherine Roznik '14, Issy Stack '14, Mishel Figueroa '14, and Natalie Whiting '14 anchored the Big Red defense and extended their unscored upon streak to over 160 minutes. Hanna Dillon '15 and Olivia O'Malley '15 contributed greatly to the defensive effort. The win was goalkeeper Leidt's first shutout victory of the season.
Taft was able to showcase how far they have come this year in front of their parents. Taft looks to continue it's form when they take on one of the best teams in New England on Wednesday when they host Westminster. Kickoff is set for 3:00pm.
