Junior Varsity Softball
vs Kent School
Score/Result: 24-7 W
Saturday, April 27, 2013—
Taft experienced a commanding win against Kent on their campus last Saturday. The 24-7 win brings the JV Softball record to 3-2. The squad has shown a vast improvement in a 2-week period of games. They were aggressive and composed from the first time at bat to the last pitch. Abby Wang pitched the first two innings, Cassie Willson pitched the third and the fourth inning, and Lily Tyson once again closed the game in the fifth inning.
While it was defense that helped Taft to their previous win, this time around offense that was the main focus. Attributed to smart decisions at bat and aggressive base running, the Rhinos scored the maximum 5 runs per inning in all but the second inning where they scored four. Major offensive contributions came from Alexa Colangelo who went 3 for 6 at bat and had five RBIs. KC Pietro went 2-2 at bat and brought three runs in. With a runner on first, Pietro steps up to the plate and smashes a ball towards left center field so far that it reaches the end of the field and into the street. Unfortunately, the umpire called a ground rule double on the hit, but in the process she batted in a Taft runner. Abby Woods hit 2/3 and earned 4 RBIs. Isabelle Homberg had a great performance. She went 1 for 2 and brought 3 runs home. Liana Hickey, and Caroline Blatz each has a hit and brought a run home. Taft generally performed well swinging at smart pitches, and pushing themselves while on base.
Notable defensive plays come from the entire infield. In the first inning, Pietro made a play to catcher, Srinidhi Bharadwaj at home to tag the runner for the second out of the first inning. In the third inning with bases empty, a hard ground ball was hit towards shortstop, Agnes Wong. She made a great stop and a huge throw to Caroline Blatz on first who reaches for the ball for a very close putout. Colangelo had 5 assists while playing second base for all five innings. Blatz played first base and caught 8 putouts. This was a great win and the squad looks forward to their next match.
