EMPLOYMENT

SUMMER TEACHING INTERNSHIP

At the heart of the Taft Summer School is a group of ten to twelve teaching interns selected from outstanding college juniors and seniors who express an interest in education. Each intern works with a Master Teacher in one or two classes, beginning as an observer and eventually teaching independently. This approach combines a gradual introduction to classroom teaching with a maximum amount of guidance and support from the Master Teacher. Interns also assist in the afternoon sports programs, serve as advisors to five or six summer school students, organize and chaperone various trips and activities, and live in and supervise dormitories. In essence, the interns experience each facet of boarding school faculty life, enabling them to make more informed decisions regarding their future in the teaching profession.

Interns generally assist in Science, English, and Mathematics courses, but have also been assigned to foreign languages, ESL and art classes. As members of the faculty, they are provided with a salary, free housing and board, on-campus medical attention, and teaching materials. The job demands strong commitment and, because of the residential nature of the program, interns must be available to chaperone trips and oversee dormitories on weekends. Each year, approximately half of the interns go on to teach in independent schools and, wherever possible, the Director of the Summer School provides assistance and support in their decision-making process.

Application Procedure

Applications sent after February 1st, will not be considered.
