Robert Eshoo"Boxes" In the Mark W. Potter '48 GalleryOctober 12 to November 17, 2007
Listen to his Morning Meeting talk The Rockwell Visiting Artist Fund at Taft and the Potter Gallery host the work of Robert Eshoo from October 12 through November 17. The opening reception is Friday, October 12, from 5-7 p.m. and is open to the public. Eshoo, who spoke about his work to the assembled school at Morning Meeting on October 11, attended Syracuse University and continued his studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He has taught and exhibited in the New England area throughout his career. His earlier works, which examined the plight of the Sioux Indians, were watercolors in the trompe l'oeil ("fool the eye") transition. New themes are now transformed by the use of real objects - worn wooden shapes, faded colored paper, broken objects, and feathers. His work is characterized by a wonderful sense of composition, beauty and sensitivity. His works are included in museum collections at Chase Manhattan Bank, New York; Dartmouth College, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, the Addison Gallery at Phillips Academy, Andover; The Currier Museum of Art, the New Britain Museum of American Art, and Wadsworth Antheneum, among others. He has taught at Phillips Academy, Andover, MA at Syracuse University and was the former Director of the Currier Art Center. He was featured in Art in America and Harper’s Bazaar in addition to having reviews in “The Boston Globe,” “Art New England,” and “Christian Science Monitor.” He is a Boston Arts Festival prize winner. He has exhibited in New York at the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art; at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; the Portland Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, the Addison Gallery at Phillips Academy, DeCordova Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art, The Chicago Art Institute, Brandeis University, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, The University of Illinois, New England College, the Swetzoff Gallery, Boston; Rieglehaupt Gallery, Boston; Pucker Gallery, Boston; Paul Arts Center, University of New Hampshire; The Currier Museum of Art, St. Paul School, Mobile Art Gallery, AL; and Corcoran Gallery, Washington, among others. Eshoo holds a degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and BFA and MFA degrees from Syracuse University. He did post-graduate study at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His work may be viewed online at: http://www.puckergallery.com/Catalogue.Eshoo.pdf The Mark W. Potter Gallery was created to honor the legacy of Mark Potter, class of 1948, as a teacher, schoolmaster, and a painter. The mission of the Mark Potter Gallery is to cultivate the artistic and intellectual growth of the many communities that make up the Taft School: students, parents, faculty, alumni, and our friends in Watertown and beyond. The Gallery presents exhibitions and programs to educate and inspire its visitors, challenging us to reflect on the complex meanings conveyed in visual signs, gestures, and subjects. The gallery is open Mondays through Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., when the Taft School is in session.
