Vanessa Holroyd '90 and Arcadian Winds

Flutist Vanessa Holroyd '90 performed in Walker Hall on January 12 with her quintet, Arcadian Winds. The performers also held a winds workshop for members of the Chamber Ensemble earlier that afternoon

Audiences enjoyed an evening program of Bach, Ligeti and Holst. The quintet is made up of Jane Harrison (oboe), Mark Miller (clarinet), John Paul Aubrey (horn), Janet Underhill (bassoon), and Holroyd (flute).

Aracdian Winds was founded as a woodwind trio at Boston University in 1987, expanding to a quintet in 1989. The group has premiered nearly 50 new works and championed many others. With a strong committment to education, the group has brought chamber and contemporary music to many schools in the Boston Area.

Vanessa Holroyd, daughter of longtime chaplain Peter Holroyd, studied literature at Yale and then earned her master's in flute performance at McGill University in Montreal. She also holds an artist diploma from the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Mass. She is also a member of the Festival Ballet Orchestra in Providence, R.I., and the New Bedford [Mass.] Symphony Orchestra. She performs frequently with pianist Joy Cline Phinney (as she did on her previous appearance in Walker Hall).

The concert was part of the school's yearlong Walker Hall music series, "Music for a While."
