Dr. Joyce Poole '74![]() Dr. Joyce Poole '74 returns to Taft. Dr. Poole is one of the world's leading experts on elephant behavior, the research director of the Amboseli Elephant Research Project, and the founder of the Elephant Voices Project. After graduating from Taft, she studied at Connecticut College and Smith College before pursuing her doctorate in Animal Behavior from the University of Cambridge, England. She has spent nearly 25 years focused on the field of elephant research in Africa. The school's Robert Keyes Poole Fellowships were created in memory of her father, former faculty member, Bob Poole '50, who dedicated much of his life to conservation in Africa.Dr. Poole's visit is sponsored by the Paduano Lecture Series in Philosophy and Ethics and recalls last year's summer reading theme: the relationship between humans and animals in the biotic community. In addition to her morning meeting talk, Dr. Poole attended classes, met with interested students and faculty during lunch, and met informally for discussion that evening in the Choral Room with former Poole Fellows and other interested students and faculty. |
