1908: President Taft

Horace's older brother William is elected president. In order for WHT's son Charlie '13 to attend the inauguration, HDT invents a new rule, that boys may miss school to attend their father's presidential inauguration. In fact, he declares a holiday for the whole school, the first Headmaster's Holiday.

"I have a brother who is the best member and idealist of the family," Judge Taft was quoted as saying in 1908. "He sits up there in Watertown and tries to square what I do with his own ideas of political virtue." Bill, as Horace called his older brother, became part of the school's original board of trustees in 1926.
