Summer Journeys: Naomi Thompson ’28, En Pointe in Scotland

Over summer, I had the incredible opportunity to study ballet and modern dance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland during a one-week summer intensive. The program was held in the beautiful city of Glasgow, Scotland. While I’ve attended many ballet intensives in the past, this was only my second time studying abroad—the first being at the Royal Ballet School at White Lodge in London.

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is consistently ranked among the world's top ten performing arts schools. The dance school acts as a feeder program to the Scottish Ballet and other international dance companies. The training was challenging and productive. Our daily schedule consisted of five hours of classes in technique, pointe, classical variations, and contemporary dance. It was incredibly helpful to receive detailed corrections and insight from skilled and experienced teachers. Dancing alongside other students who are equally driven and passionate also motivated me to grow as both a dancer and an artist.

Outside of the studio, it was amazing to explore a new country and experience a different culture. From walking through the historic streets of Glasgow to connecting with dancers from all over the world, the week was filled with unforgettable moments. One of my highlights was getting to see and pet the Scottish Highland cows! I’m grateful for the Kilbourne Grant Award for supporting my dance journey.
