Biography:

Appointed in 2006, Tom is a member of the Taft history department. He currently holds the Independence Foundation Chair II, which was awarded in 2025 and recognizes a faculty member for their service as a teacher. From 2018-2023, he served as head of the history department, where he steered the department toward a more global curriculum and navigated the transition away from APs. He has also been the Head Coach of the softball team since 2015, having previously served as an assistant coach at Taft and Kimball Union. The softball team earned a spot in the Western New England playoffs (2015-2019) and won the championship in 2018.

Tom is a proud graduate of The Holderness School in Plymouth, NH. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of New Hampshire, with a concentration in modern America. As an undergraduate student, he was inducted into Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society; earned University Honors; and was elected to the History Undergraduate Committee. During the 2001-02 school year, Tom received an M.A.T. degree with a concentration in European studies and worked as an intern at Souhegan High School in Amherst, New Hampshire. A member of the Coalition of Essential Schools, he taught freshman American studies and served as junior varsity baseball coach there. Prior to Taft, Tom joined Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire to continue his teaching career. For the next four years, he taught modern world history, U.S. history, and advanced placement U.S. history; served as dormitory head; and served on a number of committees, including the Honor Board and Student Life Committee, which created the Statement of Inclusion. At Taft, Tom has held various roles such as Associate Dean of Students, Director of Summer@Taft, and dormitory head, in addition to serving on various committees. In addition to coaching softball, Tom has helped coach varsity football and varsity ice hockey over the years. Tom lives on campus with his wife, Kristin, and their two daughters, Julia ’27 and Sophie ’29.
