Win 4-1
The Rhinos had a strong showing against the Loomis Pelicans winning 4-1 in Windsor. It took a number of shots and corners, as well as copious amounts of teamwork and communication, to earn this victory. And, it was clear that their hard work in practice during the past rainy weeks paid off in this opportunity to play on a pristine turf under a gorgeous blue sky. On defense, Lila duPont had an excellent game in the cage making four saves. She was capably supported by the low defensive trio of Katie Salnikoff, Mary Hayes and Greta Cole, as well as midfielders Callia Ferraris and Lauren Villanueva. Taft's goals came from the sticks of three different players and three of the goals were from direct assists. Additionally, the scoring was balanced throughout the 50 minutes with Martha Lohuis beginning the run with a screeching shot off a corner insert from Andie Wardell. This goal set the pace for the Rhinos and was soon followed by a second corner goal, again inserted by Wardell and tapped in by Maddy Meister. Wardell had an excellent game and her passing serving as the catalyst for many of the offensive opportunities. This hard work was complemented by both the attack and midfield including strong games by Perry Allen, Brooke Marx, Julia Kunzlemann, and Lulu Bradley who each worked diligently to convert possessions. At the start of the second half, Loomis got on the board with the lone goal of the day. Taft soon reciprocated when Lohuis tallied her second goal out of the chaos of a broken corner. Four minutes later, Eva Witkowski worked the ball up the left wing, dodged, and then receive a pass that put her on the Loomis doorstep where she shot and beat the keeper strong side. Witkowski had a stellar showing during the second half, along with Anna Wice, Sadie Pollack, May Cassidy and Sophia Sheumack on the front line. The depth of talent and physical fitness of the Rhinos was apparent and the team looks forward to their next challenge--Greenwich Academy--when they travel south on Wednesday. Go Big Red!
