Tie 1-1
A Friday afternoon rematch against Westminster - this time on Rhino territory on this brisk and windy day. Early in the first half, Isabelle Johnson used her offensive speed to push the ball up towards the offensive circle. Sydney Locke capitalized on opportunities at the top of the circle to drive a shot towards the goal, working together with May Cassidy, who shared her poise and field vision with us from the JV team. The Rhino offense kept the pressure up as Katie Salnikoff - also from the JV team who generously played with the thirds team today - had a speedy breakaway from the opposite restraining line towards our offensive circle. The Rhino offense drew a stellar 8 offensive corners just in the first half. The Rhino defense was just as impressive, holding Westminster to only 3 corners and not having a goal scored to close out the first half. With the score being tied 0-0 to open the second half, the Rhinos were hungry to keep fighting. As Westy drew a corner within the first five minutes of the second half, Valerie Thomas used her speed to sprint out of the cage in the "Fly" position to block a Westminster shot from being taken. Coco Hills and Kara Ro grounded the defensive transition, as Lucy McGinnis carried the ball all the way to the offensive side on a breakaway past several Westminster players, giving the Rhinos another opportunity. Westminster got hold of the ball and they pressured back towards their offensive as Claire Welch made an awesome save, but unlucky finish with Westminster players pressuring the cage to give Westminster a 1-0 lead. The Rhinos kept fighting to push the ball towards the offensive and drew three corners in the second half. Chloe Meuse inserted the ball to her teammates at the top of the circle, as Lucy McGinnis was able to find the back of the net for the Rhinos to tie up the game! The game went into sudden victory overtime: first team to score first wins. Coco Hills, Isabelle Johnson, Lucy McGinnis, Chloe Meuse, Valerie Thomas, Katie Salnikoff, and Claire Welch stepped onto the field feeling pumped up and full of spirit. Valerie Thomas and Coco Hills had crucial defensive stops on Westminsters' corners for the game to come to a 1-1 end to the game. An absolute team effort, high intensity, and fun Friday afternoon for the Thirds team!
