Win 5-0
The Big Red extended its winning streak to five games, with a 5-0 victory over a hard-working Gunnery side. In their varsity debuts, sophomore goalkeepers Chris Murphy and Brooks Reed split halves to earn The Rhinos' second straight shutout, and strong defensive efforts from Ethan Hindle, Nick Kenerson, Jayce Fraser, and Benas Babenskas prevented Gunnery from creating many chances. Taft opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Sammed Bawa ran onto a long pass from Kharym Florvil. Bawa popped the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give The Rhinos an early lead. Florvil set up the next goal as well, dribbling past two defenders and finding Nur Adhikarie in front of goal. Nur made no mistake with the opportunity, punching the ball into the net to double Taft's lead. Bawa added another goal before halftime after receiving a slick pass from Marvin Sibanda, and the score stood 3-0 at the break. Early in the second half Bawa and Sibanda linked up again, as Marvin slipped a pass through the Gunnery defense, and Bawa cut the ball back inside the far post to complete his hattrick. Ten minutes later, Sibanda would get a goal of his own, scoring off a long range shot after receiving a pass from KK Baffour. As the half progressed, Jayce Fraser, Diky Izmirlian, and Taj Salawu all looked dangerous in the attacking end of the field, but each player remains in search of his first Taft goal. Up next, Taft will host a talented Suffield team on Saturday.
