Win 53-48
A close game throughout – it was 25-23 Deerfield at the half – began to tip the visiting Rhinos’ way with a little over eight minutes left when Sophie Webb knocked down two free throws to put Taft up by a point and quiet an ever-growing, raucous crowd. Eliza Ford recorded Taft’s next two field goals, the first on a nice bounce pass from Anna Csigirinszkij, the second on an off-glass 3-ball from the left wing. A few minutes later, it was Csigirinszkij’s turn to hit a key bucket,, when, after Deerfield pulled to within four on a long three-pointer that sent the fans into delirium, she stepped into kickout from Kayla Robinson and calmly drained a 3-ball of her own (Csig had 5 points on the day). The last two-and-half minutes were wild – turnovers and missed shots by both teams, a violent player collision that somehow resulted in no foul called, and an entire home-team possession during which the clock did not start – but the visitors hung on for a tough road win against a physical and determined opponent. Robinson played the whole game and was all over the court for Taft, finishing with 16 points, seventeen rebounds, five assists and two steals. Ford played her best ball to date, giving the Rhinos points (12 on the day) and physicality (four boards) off the bench. Sophie Webb netted 9 before departing with a nagging back injury; she also defended intelligently and aggressively. Natalie Hodak (5 points, three assists and steals) and Anna Koziol (3 points, eight rebounds) struggled from the field, but they still made plays all game long. Maggie O’Leary couldn’t shake free for many good looks, but she hit her only clean one of the game – a 3 from the right corner – and refused to back down on the defensive side while also leading Taft vocally, whether on or off the court.
