Win 4-1
Watertown, CT—Growing in stature with two games to go, Taft saved one of their best performances of the season against a well-organized and tenacious Loomis side. The Rhinos defended as a unit and attacked with guile from the very first minute. Aidan Essig and Ranon Larpcharern were solid at the center of defense and Peter Yu was unplayable at left back. Devin Johnson, Cooper Reed and Edvin Tran Hoac put in a fantastic shift in the engine room. Luke Smith was outstanding upfront and scored his first goal of the season. Carrying a slight knock, the on-form Will Franco wreaked havoc against the quick Loomis backline. Silky Marwan Elborolossy pulled the strings from his number 10 position and combined well with the menacing Lachlan Hawes and Tucker Cassady. Taft eventually broke the deadlock on the 24th minute with a classic striker’s finish from Smith after a wonderful run and cutback from Franco, which included an Elastico dribble. 6 minutes later, the lead was doubled by a forced own goal after fantastic work by Smith and Hawes. As we approached the half-time mark, the Rhinos made it 3-0. Sean Dunbar, who had a solid afternoon in goal, provided a pinpoint longball to Franco who beat his man and crossed for Hawes to make it three. Although Taft started the second half with a similar intensity, Loomis showed fantastic character and piled the pressure on our backline. Eventually, the away-side forced a mistake in midfield, attacked Taft’s left channel effectively and cut the ball back for a beautiful far post finish. Just as Taft did against Choate, the team immediately reacted and scored one of their finest goals of the 2019 Fall Season. Elborolossy picked up the ball in between the lines and released the energetic Nixon Jennings on the right flank. Jennings took a touch at full pace, sized-up the keeper and delicately chipped a delicious ball into the left corner. Alex Downey and Scott Noh entered the fray and provided intensity and goal threat by combining intelligently on the wing. Jesse Brew and Jin Young Min were a nuisance to their backline and pressed the ball aggressively. Tate Phillips showed his passing range by spraying a few wonderful through balls. Nick Alin-Hvidsten created two fantastic chances for himself upfront and was unlucky not to score. Fej Esievo’s tenaciousness was unmatched by any of the opposing winger and fullback. Taft will finish their season at Hotchkiss this Saturday.
