Win 3-0
Suffield, CT--Taft bounced back from a disappointing defeat against Deerfield with a professional performance against a resilient Suffield Academy. The Rhinos got off to a strong start and scored a wonderful team goal 2 minutes into the game. Taft continued to pressure Suffield and scored from the spot midway through the first half. Suffield responded by asking plenty of questions of the Rhinos’ backline, but was unlucky not to threaten more. Taft started the second half in similar fashion and eventually got a deserved third goal. The game was played in good spirit and sportsmanship was demonstrated from both sides. RW Luke Smith ’22 picked up the ball from the right back position 2 minutes into the game and dribbled past two players before laying the ball off to a teammate. A beautiful diagonal pass found Will Franco ’22 flashing into space. Franco’s tricky run got the better of the full back and finished with a clever right-footed finish at the near post. Taft pressed Suffield high up the pitch and created numerous chances, including a free-kick 25 yards from goal, a result of an illegal back pass from a Suffield defender. The home team's GK had an excellent game, especially in his save from the dead-ball situation. At the 22-minute mark, Taft’s corner led to a Suffield handball in the box. Franco stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to double his tally. Many Rhinos contributed to this team effort. Elliot Cohen ’22 put his best performance yet at RB and CF by keeping the ball well for the team and creating dangerous chances. Jin Young Min ’22 provided excellent linkup play and was unlucky not to get an assist. Jesse Brew ’22 and Tate Phillips ’21 provided plenty of industry down the flanks, while Alex Downey ’22 was strong and solid at the back. A long-awaited return for Cooper Reed ’23 was a big positive for Big Red and the freshman showed little rust from his thigh injury. The second half was similar to the first. The ever-present captain Devin Johnson ’20 found Franco with a nifty diagonal ball over the opponent’s fullback at the 57th minute mark. Franco let the ball run across his body to allow for a first-time finish at the far post. CM Marwan Elborolossy ’21 had an outstanding game as an attacking midfielder by playing in tight pockets between the lines and connecting his teammates effectively. CF Will De Luca ’21 was a nuisance to the back four and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet with an ambitious half-volley. RB Fej Osievo ’22 continues his fine run of form in the channels. Offering solid performances at the back, GK Emmett Flynn ’22 had a sure-handed half and RB Nick Alin-Hvidsten ’10 kept his opponents on alert throughout his minutes. Taft returns home Wednesday to host Berkshire. Game time is 2:30.
