Tie 1-1
On a fine late summer afternoon, the young lads from Rumsey traveled down to Taft to face our boys in Taft’s first match of the year. Both teams had good energy at first with Rumsey really pressing the play in Taft’s end of the field. This pressure yielded a good opportunity and a goal for Rumsey in the fifth minute of the first half. Not an auspicious start for Taft’s Thirds soccer team. Our lads were not discouraged, however, and battled hard and earned a good chance for Connor Walsh down the left side. Connor got behind the Rumsey defense, turned the corner and sent a negative ball to Michael Nissen who did not miss and tallied Taft’s first goal of the year in the eleventh minute. Next, Taft earned a penalty kick in the sixteenth minute that was unfortunately sent wide. Both teams battled back and forth for the rest of the half with no further goals notched by either side. Both teams played hard in the second half but could not get a shot past either goalkeeper. Ryan Egan in the first half and Aidan Chan in the second half played well for Taft in the goal. Everyone played with good enthusiasm and desire to win but our fitness and skill level was clearly not at mid-season level. Kevin Gunawan played well for Taft at left back and David Ma and Abdullah Alkazemi gave a good effort in the midfield. Our next match is tomorrow up at Deerfield, no rest for the weary. We’ll dig deep and do our best and hopefully earn a good result. See you way up there in Massachusetts!
