Win 30-23
The fall of 1993 saw Bill Clinton a few months into his first term as President of the United States, The Fugitive topping the box office, a first-class stamp cost twenty-nine cents, and Taft’s last home victory over Phillips Academy until Saturday. On an overcast afternoon, Taft would come out on top, 30-23. The visitors struck first after capitalizing on a fumble deep in Taft’s territory to go up 7-0. The Rhinos would respond as Billy Daal ‘22 took a screen pass from junior signal-caller Nick Brown ‘23 and went in for the score. Taft muffed the snap and visitors from Andover remained on top, 7-6. A few possessions later, Nico Schwikal ‘22 forced a fumble which Joseph Nash ‘22 recovered at the Andover twelve-yard line. Two plays later Daal would sprint into the endzone to put Taft in the lead. Steve Mayer’s extra-point made it 13-7. The Big Blue would respond by marching down the field and scoring a touchdown with 1:20 left in the first half. Not to be outdone, Taft would go eight plays in 1:15 to set up a Mayer field goal from twenty-two yards. The key play on the drive was a 3rd and 10 where Brown found Jack Odden ‘23 behind the Andover secondary for a thirty-four-yard reception. Taft lead at the half, 16-14. The third quarter belonged to Taft as they scored twice. A two-yard plunge from Daal set up by a 73yard reception from Schwikal and Daal’s third score of the day from inside the five. Andover did not quit and had the ball with less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter in their territory with a chance to tie the score. However, Odden stepped in front of an errant deep ball and intercepted the pass to seal the game. Taft emerged victorious, 30-23. These fine institutions have restarted a series that met every year from 1983-1996. Taft’s next game is October 16th when they travel to Choate. The kickoff is scheduled for 6 pm.
