Loss 35-20
Fourteen runners from Taft’s team braved the course at Loomis for our quad meet along with Hotchkiss and NMH before heading out for our long weekend break. While these runners had impressive individual performances that made their coaches proud, the team ultimately lost to all three opponents. Congratulations to overall winner Hotchkiss and both Loomis and NMH for a great race! In the varsity scoring, the top 5 finishers each improved their times from last week’s race at Choate, by an average of 21 seconds each. Captain Hanna Murphy (21:52) led the way for the team again, with fellow seniors Lexi Cafiero (22:04) and Claudia Vira (22:12) close behind her. This group of three went out hard and hung on to run the best times they have all season, with Cafiero just barely missing the big milestone of breaking 22 minutes. Mids Michelle Lian (22:52) and Katie Bootsma (23:03) finished the scoring, each running a season best time for the 5k distance. These five girls are seeing the benefits of their tough training and are looking forward to another fast race at Williston Northampton in two weeks. Vying for the sixth and seventh varsity spots were Yuka Ishimoto (24:57), Haley Barr (25:22) and Eleanor Streit (25:22). Ishimoto knocked 40 seconds off of her time from last week and made the top 7 for the first time this year! Veterans Barr and Streit battled down the finishing stretch in an almost too-close-to-call finish, but the seventh spot on varsity went to Barr and the first spot on JV to Streit. Streit’s consolation prize was that she ran 44 seconds faster this year than she did on the same course last year! Second in the JV scoring behind Streit was Bojana Drca (27:48), who had the team’s biggest improvement of the week, dropping a whopping 2:34 off of her time from last week! Finishing out the JV scoring were Cece Hail (29:27), Tania Tsunik (29:47), and Laurinda Yang (29:57). Hail and Tsunik worked together throughout almost the entire course to carry each other to that finish, and Yang hit a major milestone this week by finishing a 5k in under 30 minutes! The JV team’s sixth and seventh displacement runners were Bonnie Song (30:15) and Julia Kim (31:32), both of whom continue to impress the coaching staff with their positive attitudes and steady improvement. Despite the losses, the atmosphere on the bus home was one of excitement, both for the race itself and for the impending long weekend. Taft’s harriers will be back in action on October 21 at Williston Northampton.
