Win 2-1
There are few things as exciting as an overtime period in field hockey. Instead of 10 field players, the team plays with 6 field players and a goalkeeper. We had an incredibly exciting finish by beating Ethel Walker in a sudden victory overtime. The game started off very well, we were dominating and passing extremely well. We had multiple shots in the first half by Eva, Abigail, Liv, McKinley, Olivia, and Caeley. Nothing, however, was falling our way. Ethel Walker’s adjusted their strategy and decided to spread the field and hang 1 to 3 cherry pickers up high. We called a timeout to talk about how to manage forwards high on the field. Knowing how strong Cori, Lauren, and Amelia are on their sticks, we were not worried too much about the danger these forwards posed. EWS had a number of big hit balls that flew over the end line. However, with less than 5 minutes left in the half, the ball was cleared out of our offensive end. Eva attempted to tackle the ball in the midfield but in an awkward pivot, her knee buckled, and we were all unsure if she was hurt or was able to shake it off. In the meantime, an EWS player hit one of her high forwards who was behind our defense and she was able to take the ball into the circle for a 1 vs. 1 with Phoebe and she scored. This shock could have deflated other teams, but we were not to be deterred. We fought hard for the entire second half to even the score. Eva played her best game of the season and you could absolutely see the determination to win in her face. The entire team rallied and played gritty and strong. With 2 minutes left in the game, our best chance to score came. It was a big scramble in front of the net, it looked like Mckinley, Olivia and Liv were doing their best to score, A defender from EWS ended up on the ground and her body blocked what would have been a sure goal so we were awarded a penalty stroke. EWS called a timeout but that gave us time to regroup and come up with a plan. Although looking at Eva’s face, I knew she would score. She has an outstanding penalty stroke. And score she did. So that sent us into over time. Asia and Emma were incredible as our outside mids. At the end of the game, Asia was all over the ball keeping possession on our right side. She repeatedly put the ball down the sidelines sometimes deftly putting the ball between the feet of the defender. Emma used her strong tackling skills throughout the entire game and it was the tackle that turned the tide in our favor in the OT. Phoebe had 4 saves. Eva, Liv, McKinley, Cori, Lauren, Emma, and Phoebe took the field for the OT. Both Liv and McKinley had a couple of chances to get the ball down in our attacking end but they were stopped by good defensive plays made by Walker’s. They then were able to turn the tide and they got off one great shot but Phoebe made a great save with a hard clear. However, they earned two corners quickly but we turned them away. On the second corner, the attacker beat our defensive fly but Lauren stepped right up and stripped the ball from the EWS attacker. A short time after that, Emma stopped their right wing with an excellent block tackle and McKinley picked up the loose ball and carried it hard downfield. She was fouled and we got the ball and Emma and Eva were able to get two good shots off and then we earned a corner. Eva inserted the ball up to McKinley who passed to Olivia who placed her shot perfectly to hit the near post and Eva cut in to get the tip. The team rushed the field to celebrate this huge and exciting win! We play Kent at home on Saturday for parent’s day. We are having a Play for a Cure game to raise money for breast cancer research and we will be having a bake sale to raise money.
