Taft Falls to Sacred Heart in Season Opener The JV field hockey team put forth a fine effort this afternoon against a talented Sacred Heart squad. The group showcased their individual talents while also developing their cohesion as a unit. Highlights include stand out defensive plays by Carolyn Yow, Sophie Savage and Greta Cole; as well as a brilliant JV debut for goalie, Emily Riccardi (8 saves). In the midfield, Martha Lohuis anchored the team with her agile stick work and field vision. Alongside Lohuis, Michelle Tetro, Rachel Peverly and Lulu Bradley covered the entire field working hard to transition the ball towards the offensive circle. On the front line, Annelise Pizzitola, Perry Allen, Julia Kunzelmann, Lulu Brauer, Andie Wardell and Madeline Meister worked valiantly to capitalize on every scoring opportunities, never loosing sight of the goal. The first half of the game was evenly matched with both teams tallying multiple shots and one corner apiece. During the first period, the Rhinos created three breakaways off the sticks of Cole to Lohuis to Allen, but were unable to convert. With the score tied 0-0 at the half, Taft had ample confidence headed into the second period. From the whistle, the Rhinos had several chances to score, however, at the 33 minute mark Sacred Heart broke the seal with a tipped-in ball off a broken corner. From there, Heart capitalized on their momentum scoring a second goal just four minutes later. Taft did not relent and generated two corner opportunities during the intermediary minutes of the period with excellent shots by Allen, Brauer and Meister. The opponent's stalwart defense and talented keeper successfully fended off the Rhinos and, at the same time, Sacred Heart tallied two more goals in the closing minutes of the game. It was a game to learn from and the JV Rhinos look forward to a few days of practice ahead of their next match up against neighboring rival, Choate. Go Big Red!
