Rhinos drop nailbiter to Gators. Despite a solid effort from all parts of the field, Taft was unable to pull out the win from a perennially strong Greenwich Academy team. The first half saw plenty of scoring opportunities for the Rhinos as they dominated possession. However, they were not able to seal the deal despite the pressure of Lulu Brauer, Julia Kunzelmann, Liz Carlson and Perry Allen in front of the GA cage. After several intense full-field transitions, GA earned an advantageous corner off of which they scored a beautifully executed goal that glanced by goalie Emily Riccardi's outstreched kicker. This goal ignited GA's offense and had a similar effect on Taft's momentum. After a strategic time-out, the Rhinos came back onto the field ready to gain the upper hand. And, that they did. Lulu Brauer, off a passing sequence from Carolyn Yow, Martha Lohuis and Sophie Savage, launched a spectacular aerial shot that beat the GA keep in the upper right corner. Unfortunately, the goal was called back for safety reasons. It was a palpable "coulda, shoulda, woulda" moment. Throughout the second half Taft played their brand of hockey, pass-driven, creative and proactive. And, despite some very strong individual efforts from, and 8 brilliant saves from Riccardi, and a second GA goal, Taft was not able to manufacture a whole that was greater than the sum of its parts. While a disappointing loss and the feeling of having missed an opportunity, this contest leaves Taft buoyed with confidence headed into their game versus Porters. The Rhinos are looking forward to another exciting match up! GO BIG RED!
