Win 3-0
The JV Rhinos rode the wave of excitement following the varsity squad's amazing OT win in their match versus Ethel Walker. Lulu Bradley opened the scoring at the 18:23 mark with an excellent baseline maneuver to beat the Walker's keeper on a low angle shot. The Wildcats attempted to answer back using their layered defense and powerful goalie clears to retrieve and then advance the ball. However, they were repeatedly held short by the commanding blocks of midfielders Michelle Tetro, Sophie Savage, and Martha Lohuis who worked in concert with Perry Allen and Julia Kunzelmann to field the ball into the offensive zone. At 3:53, off of one such Savage--Lohuis--Allen transition, the ball was placed on the ready stick of Lulu Brauer who, reading the crowded circle, pulled the ball back, split the defense and launched a shot into the roof of the goal beating the fully extended keeper. Immediately following this spectacular goal, right side trio of defender Greta Cole, midfielder Madeline Meister and forward Annaleise Pizzitola worked the ball from the 50 yard line and came within inches of scoring another goal. However, as the horn sounded, the Walker's keeper cleared the ball with authority. The Rhinos ended the first period with eleven shots, one corner and the 2-0 advantage. The second half would yield a continuation of the previous 25 minutes. Taft controlled the ball with play remaining in the offensive zone for the majority of the half. Julia Kunzelmann scored the third goal of the day at the 20:54 mark off a deftly handled rebound from Andie Wardell's initial shot. Wardell's quick thinking and quick moving feet kept the ball legally in play. As the minutes dwindled, along with the setting sun, the defensive trio of Katie Salnikoff, Rachel Peverly and Carolyn Yow thwarted Walker's two corner attempts assisting goalie Emily Riccardi in the shutout, her fifth of the season. In celebration of the victory, the skies over Taft turned a spectacular shade of Rhino Red; a fitting closure for Taft field hockey winning the day. Go Big Red!
