The Taft thirds field hockey team opened the season against Suffield Academy on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Taft had some great scoring opportunities and played solid defense throughout the day. The team was energetic and put forth a great effort as the game ended in a tie, 0-0. In the first half, the Rhinos got off to a quick start when Sadie Pollack, Betsy Good, Abby Hawkins and Ella Losee led an attack that resulted in two shots on goal in the first five minutes of the game. However, Suffield’s goalie was up for the challenge and was able to deflect both shots. The midfielders, led by Lily Darwin, Meredith King, Melody McAtee and Paula Eckstein were able to keep the ball in the offensive half of the field for most of the game. In the second half, Suffield started with a strong attack. But the Rhino’s defense, led by Alex Gunton, Rose Gasser, Lauren Anderson, Merrill Bright and Karen Werner, was able to keep the scoring opportunities to a minimum. The two shots on goal were deflected by the Taft goalie, Alara Altun, who earns her first shutout in a Taft uniform. Taft returns to action on Wednesday, September 27, when Hotchkiss travels to Watertown for a 2:30 start.
