In the home opener for Taft thirds field hockey, the Rhinos took on a solid team from Hotchkiss. The game was contested much of the afternoon in the midfield, a testament to the quality defense that was being played by both teams. Taft had many good scoring opportunities, but was unable to convert and ended the game down 0-2. In the first half, Taft had strong and energetic midfield play from Meredith King, Loren Lacruz, Melody McAtee, Merrill Bright, Lily Darwin and Zoe Shane. The lone goal in the first half came when a drive from a Hotchkiss midfielder got behind the Taft defense and their attack was able to convert on a breakaway. After this goal, the Taft defense, led by Rose Gasser, Lauren Anderson, Alex Gunton and Carolina Salvatore held Hotchkiss to very few scoring opportunities for the rest of the afternoon. In the second half, the offensive unit of Ella Losee, Sadie Pollack, Abby Hawkins, Lily Darwin, Paula Eckstein and Elizabeth Good continuously pushed the ball into the Hotchkiss half of the field. Taft had numerous scoring opportunities off of corners, but was unable to convert. Alara Altun played a solid game in goal, including 4 blocked shots. Taft returns to action next Wednesday at home against Westminster at 2:30.
