The Rhinos earned their first win of the season against Westminster on Wednesday in a hard-fought game on the turf field at Taft. An unrelenting offensive attack from Taft paired with a great defensive effort from Westminster made this an exciting game. Taft started the first half off with two great scoring opportunities in the first four minutes when two shots deflected off the goal post. Throughout the first half, the midfield play of Alex Gunton, Melody McAtee, Meredith King, Zoe Shane and Loren Lacruz helped to keep the ball in the offensive half of the field. Taft nearly scored off a corner with 5 minutes left in the first half, but again the Westminster defense was up to the challenge as a defender saved a shot when it got by the goalie. A late push by the Westminster offense was shut down by solid defensive play of Rose Gasser, Carolina Salvatore, Lauren Anderson and Karen Warner. In the second half, Taft got off to a great start as Sadie Pollack, Merrill Bright, Abby Hawkins, Betsy Good, Paula Eckstein and Ella Losee continued to put pressure on the Westminster defense. The first goal of the game came as Ella Losee collected a deflection off a shot and scored her first goal of the season. In the final minute of the game, Abby Hawkins was able to find the back of the net, securing the Taft victory. Alara Altun was great in goal, having two saves. The Rhinos travel to Westminster on Saturday, 10.7.17, for a rematch.
