Taft traveled to Deerfield on Saturday for a match against a strong and balanced team. After the long bus ride, it took the Rhinos a little while to get warmed up, but put forth a solid effort and ended the game with a tie, 1-1. In the opening minutes of the game, Deerfield attacked with high intensity and moved the ball rather easily through the Taft midfield and defense. Deerfield scored their lone goal about ten minutes into the game when an attack down the side of the field ended with a shot into the circle and off a nice save from Alara Altun (3 saves on the day), a Deerfield player got the rebound and was able to score. Deerfield took the 1-0 lead. Taft bounced back and pressured the Deerfield defense and was rewarded with four corners, but could not convert on any in the first half. The second half of the game was dominated by Taft. The Rhinos got off to a strong start as Sadie Pollack, Abby Hawkins, Betsy Good, Paula Eckstein and Merrill Bright continuously pressured the Deerfield attack. Taft scored the equalizer when Sadie Pollack scored her first goal of the season off a nice pass into the circle from Merrill Bright. Taft continued to pressure the ball and control the game in the midfield, as Melody McAtee, Alex Gunton, Loren Lacruz and Meredith King all had key plays in the game. In the final minutes of the game, Taft had four corners and almost had the game winning goal as time expired. Taft played a spirited game and should be proud of their effort.
