Taft could not have dreamed for a better start to its match at Deerfield on Wednesday. The Big Red had control of the opening kick-off and after a series of passes that swung the ball across the back line, Jack Mooney found Kevin Wharfe, who quickly played the ball ahead to Aaron Skeene. Skeene then found a streaking Mthabisi Tshuma, who laid the ball of for a charging Marvin Sibanda. Sibanda needed just one touch to drive the ball into the upper corner of the net, giving the Rhinos a 1-0 lead only thirty-eight seconds into the match. On the play, nine of the ten Taft field players got a touch on the ball, and not once did a player from Deerfield intercept a pass. That goal set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. Sibanda tallied his second goal of the match just minutes later after receiving a slick pass from Carter Veley. Still early in the first half, Sibanda completed his hat trick in what had to be record time, as he calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net after being sent in alone on goal by a pass from Sammed Bawa. Moments later, Sibanda and Bawa traded roles, as Bawa extended the lead to 4-0, and Sibanda got the assist. In the 30th minute, Mthabisi Tshuma cut through the Deerfield defense only to be hauled down inside the penalty area. Sibanda stepped up to take the penalty kick and converted for his fourth goal of the match. Before the half ended, Mthabisi Tshuma added a pair of goals, and when the half time whistle blew, Taft found themselves with a remarkable 7-0 lead. It was one of the finest halves that Taft soccer had ever produced, and Deerfield was very unfortunate to run into the Rhinos on this day. The second half was an even affair, as Deerfield pulled a goal back in the 49th minute through an outstanding individual effort from one of their talented strikers. Taft answered in the 55th minute, when Peter Denious played a perfectly weighted pass to Peter Horne, who found the back of the net for his first varsity goal. Deerfield got on the board again, scoring off of a corner kick in the 67th minute. Towards the end of the match, Dan Yen scored his first career varsity goal with Kevin Wharfe providing the assist. The game ended with a 9-2 score line in favor of The Big Red. Taft continues to get excellent contributions off the bench, and on this day, Jayce Fraser, Peter Denious, Peter Horne, Daniel Yen, and Dylan Powell all provided great energy when they came onto the pitch. Up next, Taft plays host to Andover in what promises to be another tough test for the Rhinos.
