Win 8-0
Eager to bounce back from Wednesday’s loss, The Big Red put forth a solid team performance at home on Saturday and cruised to a convincing 8-0 victory over Trinity-Pawling. With a couple of injuries to the back line, Dylan Powell stepped up and played an outstanding 90 minutes of soccer at center back for Taft. His center back partner, Jordan Miller, had an equally impressive game. Miller opened his Taft scoring account in the seventh minute to give Taft an early 1-0 lead. Aaron Skeene picked up the assist on the play. Two minutes later, Miller collected an assist, as he found Sammed Bawa, who blasted a long range shot that skipped past the keeper and into the back of the net. Still in the first half, Mthabisi Tshuma scored a pair of world-class goals, both coming off passes from Jackson Lardner. On the first, Lardner worked hard to win the ball in Trinity-Pawling’s end before looping a pass over the defense, putting Tshuma in one-on-one with the keeper. Tshuma’s second goal was truly special, as he received Lardner’s pass with his chest, and before the ball touched the ground, he blasted it by the keeper with his left foot. With the half winding down, Powell won the ball inside Taft’s penalty area and starting a lightning fast counter attack. Powell played a quick pass to Veley, who needed only a couple touches to find Marvin Sibanda, who quickly put Bawa in on a breakaway. Bawa made no mistake with the opportunity, and at half time, the score stood 5-0 in favor of the home side. Taft continued to control the game in the second half. Gabe Eliasson, Jayce Fraser and Charlie Werner were strong on the defensive end, while Dan Yen and Cole Torino were dangerous down the flanks. In the 70th minute Marvin Sibanda headed home a corner kick from Bawa to make the score 6-0. With about fifteen minutes to play, Miller was given the chance to play farther up the field, and he did not waste the opportunity. He knocked in two goals in quick succession, completing his hat trick and showing a bit of versatility in the process. Sibanda and Torino assisted on the Miller goals. With the win, Taft improved to 8-1 with a busy week ahead. The Rhinos are right back in action with a Monday afternoon trip to Kingswood-Oxford for the second of four matches in eight days.
