Tie 3-3
The Taft JV Boys soccer team welcomed the (big) lads from Westminster on a blustery Wednesday afternoon 20Sep17. Westie opened the scoring as a forward in white got behind the Taft defense and put in a low shot with the outside right foot in the third minute. Our lads in red did not get discouraged however, and evened the score at one as Beau Root pushed a through ball to an on-rushing Joel Edholm who tapped the ball past the Westie keeper in the tenth minute. Taft went ahead in the seventeenth minute as Beau and Joel worked together again nicely with Beau crossing a negative ball for an easy goal for Joel. Next, Taft keeper Sean Dunbar tallied an assist as a wind-aided punt reached Joel at the front who beat the Westie keeper for the third time in the half and a hat-trick in only the twentieth minute! The first half ended with Taft ahead three – one. Westie came out strong in the second half with the wind at their backs and tallied their second goal in the fiftieth minute as a long punt bounced over the converging but non-communicative Taft back-line allowing a Westie forward to run-on and tally a goal. Westie’s size advantage came to the fore in the sixtieth minute as a Westie forward ran over a Taft defender, gained possession and notched the tying goal. Both teams were back and forth for the final twenty minutes with Taft coming very close to winning the match in the final moments but Beau Root’s effort was cleared off the goal line by a Westie defender. Ian Staines had struck the inside of the far post earlier in the half but that ball did not cross the goal line either. All-in-all our lads played well against a big, tough, senior-dominated side from Simsbury, but we also failed to protect a two goal lead in the second half. We will practice hard and come out strong on Saturday against the boys from Avon Old Farms. See you over there in Avon!
