The Taft JV Boys soccer team traveled to Suffield on a warm, humid Saturday afternoon, 7Apr17, to meet the previously undefeated Tigers. Taft controlled the early play on a slightly small but thickly grassed soccer field. Our lads earned some good chances and played stiff defense. The backline of Max Fossland, Nick Kenerson, Stephen Cho and Lachlan Berray were stalwarts with Sean Dunbar playing well in goal behind them. Taft earned many chances but could not reach the Suffield net until the twenty fourth minute when Jaime Zoellner and Ian Staines worked a lovely give-and-go the sent Ian in alone for Taft's first goal of the match. Both teams played hard for the rest of the first half but the whistle blew twice with Taft ahead, one nil. The play continued furiously in the second half, despite the heat. Suffield earned the tying goal in the forty eighth minute as another long-ball forward found an Suffield player in the left corner who sent a cross across the Taft goal that was tapped in by an onrushing Suffield forward. Did our lads become discouraged? No! They dug deep and worked hard to regain the lead. Edvin Tran Hoac was the hub of the Taft offense in the middle, gaining possession through fair tackles and then delivering passes to his teammates. Jaime Zoellner earned his second assist of the match in the fifty fifth minute with a lovely through ball to Mayan Ewert who blasted another shot off the Suffield 'keeper then pushed the rebound into the goal. Mayan scored his second goal of the match in the eighty fourth minute as CJ D'Virgilio sent a long through ball ahead that Mayan controlled and then sent inside the far post. Chris Murphy played well in goal for Taft during the second half. This win was an excellent way to begin our Fall Long Weekend and made for an excellent hour's ride home to Watertown. Next match is this Wednesday 11Oct17 v Berkshire at Taft at 2:30 PM. See you there!
